WA R N I N G Persons who are unable to feel tempera- ture change or skin pain due to age, ill- ness, injury, medication, alcohol use, fatigue or other physical conditions or who have sensitive skin may suffer burnswhen using the heated seat even at low temperatures. To reduce the risk of burns, people with such conditions must use carewhen using the heated seat.CAUTION Switch off the heated seats when not in use.Operate the heaters at the “HI” position for quick heating. After the seat has become warm, set the heater switch to the “LO” posi-tion to keep it warm. Slight variations in the seat temperature may be felt while using the heated seats. This is caused by the operationof the heater’s internal thermostat and does not indicate a malfunction. Do not place heavy objects on the seat or stick pins, needles, or other pointed objects into the seat. Do not place a blanket,
cushion, or other
insulating material on the seat while using the heater; doing so can cause the heater ele- ment to overheat. When cleaning the seat, do not use benzine, kerosene, gasoline, alcohol, or other organicsolvents; doing so can cause damage not only to the surface of the seat, but also to the heater.
 If water or any other li
quid is spilled on the
seat, allow it to dry thoroughly before attempting to use the heater. Turn the heater off immediately if it appears to be malfunctioning during use.NOTE
 Do not use the heated seats for a long time when the engine is not running, doing so will cause the battery to be discharged.

Head restraints can reduce the risk of a whip- lash injury if your vehicle is hit from the rear.The head restraints are equipped in the illus- trated position. To maximize the effectiveness of the headrestraints, adjust the seatback to the upright position, and the head
restraint to the proper
position. Sit back against the seatback withyour head close to the head restraint.
2 (OFF) - Heater off 3 (LO) - Heater low (to keep the seat-
warm)
For the rear outboard seats

NOTE
 The rear seat switch will automatically return to “OFF” after the engine is stopped.
Head restraints
WA R N I N G Driving without the head restraints in place can cause you and your passengers serious injury or death in an accident. To reduce the risk of injury in an accident, always make sure the head restraints areinstalled and properly positioned when the seat is occupied. In order to minimize the risk of a neck injury due to a rear impact, the seatback must be adjusted to the upright positionand the head restraint must be adjusted to the proper position before vehicle opera- tion. The driver should never adjust theseat while the vehicle is in motion. Never place a cushion or similar device on the seatback. This can adversely affect head restraint performance by increasing the distance between your head and therestraint.

Parking brake

When the Electric parking brake is applied, the brake warning light (red) in the instru- ment cluster and the indicator light (A) on the Electric parking brake switch will come on. When parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels toward the curb on a downhill, or away from the curb on an uphill.
NOTE
 You may hear an operation noise from the vehicle body when operating the Electric parking brake. This
does not indicate a mal-
function and the Electric parking brake is operating normally.  When the battery is weak or dead, the Elec- tric parking brake cannot be applied orreleased. Refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2.  You may feel the brake pedal moving when operating the Electric parking brake. This does not indicate a malfunction.
To apply

1. Stop the vehicle completely. 2. Pull up the Electric parking brake switch
while depressing the brake pedal.
CAUTION While the vehicle is in motion, do not apply the Electric parking brake. Doing so may cause overheating and/or premature wear of brake parts, reducing brake performance. NOTE
 In the following conditions, the brake warn- ing light (red) will illuminate for approxi- mately 15 seconds and then go off. • While the Electric parking brake is applied, the ignition switch is turned to the “OFF”position or the operation mode is put in OFF. • While the ignition switch is in the “OFF” position or the operation mode is in OFF, the Electric parking brake switch is pulled up.
 If the Electric parking brake must be applied in an emergency situation, pull and hold the Electric parking brake switch to apply the Electric parking brake. At that time, the fol- lowing warning display will appear in themulti-information display and a buzzer will sound, however you should continue to pull and hold the Electric parking brake switch.  When parking on steep grades, pull up the Electric parking brake switch twice (once more after the operation is completed once).The maximum effect of the parking brake will be obtained.  If the parking brake does
not hold the vehicle
stationary after the foot brake is released, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer or a repair facility of your choice.  When the ignition switch or the operation mode is other than ON, if the parking brake is applied, the Electric parking brake indica- tor light comes on for a while.NOTE

This position locks the transmission to pre-vent the vehicle from moving. The engine canbe started in the “P” (PARK) position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
Warning display
NOTE
 The selector lever position display blinks at the time of or warning display appears.
 The “A” indicator on the selector lever posi- tion display will blink only when there is a problem with the CVT position switch. It is not seen during normal driving.CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The CVT fluid is overheating. The engine control may activate to lower the CVT fluid temperature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease, In this case, take one of the following procedures.• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.NOTE
After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orflashes frequently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice immediately. [When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) push the accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift.
For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be left in selector leverposition and held stationary with the service brake. For longer waiting periods with the enginerunning, place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationarywith the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in“D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi- tion.
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, firmly apply the parking brake,and then move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speedwhen starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something unusual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device toactivate. Immediately have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
 Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre- mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi- tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position {“D” (DRIVE) position or sports mode} or coast forward in the “R”(REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could lead to an accident. Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is stationary.This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while holding down the brake pedal with theselector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation withthe selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Passing acceleration
CAUTION
NOTE
 In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
Waiting
CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the selector lever is in a position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).
Parking When the CVT makes no speed change
NOTE
 When the warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-information display, there could be
a malfunction in the

Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep slope. Avoid driving on steep slopes eventhough the vehicle is an 4-wheel drive vehi- cle.

If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through water unlessabsolutely necessary. If driving through water is unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive
slowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.

 Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration and sharp turning; such operations could result in the vehicle becoming stuck.CAUTION
 If the vehicle becomes stuck in sandy or muddy roads, it can often be moved with a rocking motion. Move the selector lever alternately between the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positions while pressinglightly on the accelerator pedal.  Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehicle thoroughly as soon as possible after such use.
Climbing/descending sharp grades Driving through water
NOTE
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change the selector lever posi-tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life span of the vehicle;consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice and take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly whilelightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

The power steering system operates while the engine is running. It helps reduce the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanicalsteering capability in case the power assist islost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi- cle, but you will notice it takes much moreeffort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi- cle inspected at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice.
Warning light
Warning display If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will come on and the warningdisplay will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display. Under normal conditions, the warning lightcome on when the ignition switch is turned tothe “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after the engine has started.

WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be acti-vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will returnto normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavior is not abnormal. The headlights will return totheir original brightness after a short while.
Electric power steering system warning light/display
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
