Your vehicle may be equipped with atemporary or conventional spare tire. Atemporary spare tire is different in size(diameter or width), tread-type (All-Seasonor All-Terrain) or is from a differentmanufacturer than the road tires on yourvehicle. Consult information on the tire labelor Safety Compliance label for limitationswhen using.
Launching or Retrieving a Boat orPersonal Watercraft (PWC)
Note:Disconnect the wiring to the trailerbefore backing the trailer into the water.
Note:Reconnect the wiring to the trailerafter removing the trailer from the water.
When backing down a ramp during boatlaunching or retrieval:
•Do not allow the static water level to riseabove the bottom edge of the rearbumper.
•Do not allow waves to break higher than6 in (15 cm) above the bottom edge ofthe rear bumper.
Exceeding these limits may allow water toenter vehicle components:
•Causing internal damage to thecomponents.
•Affecting driveability, emissions, andreliability.
Replace the rear axle lubricant anytime therear axle has been submerged in water.Water may have contaminated the rear axlelubricant, which is not normally checked orchanged unless a leak is suspected or otheraxle repair is required.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON FOUR
WHEELS
WARNING: If your vehicle has asteering wheel lock make sure the ignitionis in the accessory or on position whenbeing towed.
Recreational Towing
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 152).
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing, such as towing yourvehicle behind a motorhome. Theseguidelines are designed to prevent damageto your transmission.
Two-wheel Drive Vehicles
You cannot tow a two-wheel drive vehiclewith any wheels on the ground as vehicle ortransmission damage may occur. You musttow your vehicle with all four wheels off theground, for example when using acar-hauling trailer.

Towing

WARNING: Do not disconnect thebattery during recreational towing. Itprevents the transfer case from shiftingproperly and may cause the vehicle to roll,even if the transmission is in park (P).
WARNING: Shifting the transfer caseto its neutral position for recreationaltowing may cause the vehicle to roll, evenif the transmission is in park (P). It mayinjure the driver and others. Make sure youpress the foot brake and the vehicle is ina secure, safe position when you shift toneutral (N).
Note:Failing to put the transfer case in itsneutral position can damage vehiclecomponents.
Note:You can check four-wheel-downtowing status at any time by opening thedriver's door or turning the ignition to theaccessory or on position. A messageappears in the information display confirmingyour vehicle is in neutral tow.
To exit four-wheel-down towing and returnthe transfer case to its 2H position:
1. With your vehicle still properly securedto the tow vehicle, press the brake pedaland start the engine.
2. Switch your vehicle off by pressing theengine START/STOP button once.
3.Place your vehicle in accessory mode bypressing the start button once withoutpressing the brake pedal.
4. Press the brake pedal.
5.Place the transmission back into park (P).
6. Release the brake pedal.
Note:If completed successfully, theinformation display shows 2H and NeutralTow Disabled.
Note:If the indicator light and message donot display, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts out of its neutral position,this is normal.
Note:If Shift Delayed Pull Forward displaysin the instrument cluster, transfer case geartooth blockage is present. See theinstructions following this section.
7.Apply the parking brake, then disconnectyour vehicle from the tow vehicle.
8. Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift the transmission intodrive (D) to make sure the transfer caseis out of the neutral tow position.
9.If the transfer case does not successfullyshift out of neutral (N), set the parkingbrake until you can have your vehicleserviced.
Resolving the Shift Delayed Pull Forwardor To Exit 4x4 LOW Shift to N Message
If the instrument cluster displays thesemessages, perform the following:
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2.Put the transmission into neutral (N), thenstart the engine.
3. With the engine running, shift thetransmission into drive (D) and let thevehicle roll forward, up to 3 ft (1 m). Youmay hear an audible noise as the transfercase shifts out of its neutral position. Thisis normal.

Towing

BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). During thistime, your vehicle may exhibit some unusualdriving characteristics.
Avoid driving too fast during the first 1,000 mi(1,600 km). Vary your speed frequently andchange up through the gears early. Do notlabor the engine.
Do not tow during the first 1,000 mi(1,600 km).
REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE
WARNING: If you continue to driveyour vehicle when the engine isoverheating, the engine could stop withoutwarning. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in the loss of control of yourvehicle.
If the engine coolant temperature gaugeneedle moves to the upper limit position, theengine is overheating. See Gauges (page113).
You must only drive your vehicle for a shortdistance if the engine overheats. Thedistance you can travel depends on ambienttemperature, vehicle load and terrain. Theengine continues to operate with limitedpower for a short period of time.
If the engine temperature continues to rise,the fuel supply to the engine reduces. Theair conditioning switches off and the enginecooling fan operates continually.
1. Gradually reduce your speed and stopyour vehicle as soon as it is safe to doso.
2. Immediately switch the engine off toprevent severe engine damage.
3. Wait for the engine to cool down.
4. Check the coolant level. See EngineCoolant Check (page 364).
5. Have your vehicle checked as soon aspossible.
ECONOMICAL DRIVING
Fuel economy is affected by several thingssuch as how you drive, the conditions youdrive under and how you maintain yourvehicle.
There are some things to keep in mind thatmay improve your fuel economy:
•Accelerate and slow down in a smooth,moderate fashion.
•Drive at steady speeds.
•Anticipate stops; slowing down mayeliminate the need to stop.
•Combine errands and minimizestop-and-go driving (When runningerrands, go to the furthest destinationfirst and then work your way back home).
•Close the windows for high-speeddriving.
•Drive at reasonable speeds.
•Keep the tires properly inflated and useonly the recommended size.
•Use the recommended engine oil.
•Perform all regularly scheduledmaintenance.

HAZARD FLASHERS
Note:The hazard flashers operate when theignition is in any position, or if the key is notin the ignition. If used when the vehicle is notrunning, the battery loses charge. As a result,there may be insufficient power to restartyour vehicle.
The flasher control is on theinstrument panel. Use your hazardflashers when your vehicle iscreating a safety hazard for other motorists.
•Press the flasher control and all front andrear direction indicators flash.
•Press the button again to switch them off.
FUEL SHUTOFF
WARNING: If your vehicle has beeninvolved in a crash, have the fuel systemchecked. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in fire, personal injury or death.
Note: When you try to restart your vehicleafter a fuel shutoff, the vehicle makes surethat various systems are safe to restart. Once the vehicle determines the systemsare safe, then the vehicle allows you torestart.
Note: In the event that your vehicle doesnot restart after your third attempt, contacta qualified technician.
The fuel pump shutoff stops the flow of fuelto the engine in the event of a moderate tosevere crash. Not every impact causes ashutoff.
Should your vehicle shut off after a crash,you may restart your vehicle.

Fuses

Maintain coolant concentration within 48%to 50%, which equates to a freeze pointbetween -29°F (-34°C) and -35°F (-37°C).Coolant concentration should be checkedusing a refractometer. We do not recommendthe use of hydrometers or coolant test stripsfor measuring coolant concentration.
Adding Coolant
WARNING: Do not add enginecoolant when the engine is hot. Failure tofollow this instruction could result inpersonal injury.
WARNING: Do not remove thecoolant reservoir cap when the coolingsystem is hot. Wait 10 minutes for thecooling system to cool down. Cover thecoolant reservoir cap with a thick cloth toprevent the possibility of scalding andslowly remove the cap. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.
Note: Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Take care not to putengine coolant in the windshield washer fluidreservoir or windshield washer fluid in theengine coolant reservoir.
Note: Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or non-specified additivesas they can cause damage to the enginecooling or heating systems. Resultingcomponent damage may not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.
It is very important to use prediluted coolantapproved to the correct specification in orderto avoid plugging the small passageways inthe engine cooling system. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 418). Do not mixdifferent colors or types of coolant in yourvehicle. Mixing of engine coolants or usingan incorrect coolant may harm the engine orcooling system components and may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.
Note:If prediluted coolant is not available,use the approved concentrated coolantdiluting it to 50/50 with distilled water. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 418).Using water that has not been deionisedmay contribute to deposit formation,corrosion and plugging of the small coolingsystem passageways.
Note: Coolants marketed for all makes andmodels may not be approved to ourspecifications and may cause damage tothe cooling system. Resulting componentdamage may not be covered by the vehicleWarranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
To top up the coolant level do the following:
1. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
2. Add prediluted coolant approved to thecorrect specification. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 418).
3.Add enough prediluted coolant to reachthe correct level.

Coolant Change
At specific mileage intervals, as listed in thescheduled maintenance information, thecoolant should be changed. Add predilutedcoolant approved to the correct specification.See Capacities and Specifications (page418).
Fail-Safe Cooling
Fail-safe cooling allows you to temporarilydrive your vehicle before any incrementalcomponent damage occurs. The fail-safedistance depends on ambient temperature,vehicle load and terrain.
How Fail-Safe Cooling Works
If the engine begins to overheat,the coolant temperature gaugemoves toward the red zone:
A warning lamp illuminates and amessage may appear in theinformation display.
If the engine reaches a presetover-temperature condition, the engineautomatically switches to alternating cylinderoperation. Each disabled cylinder acts as anair pump and cools the engine.
When this occurs, your vehicle still operates,however:
•Engine power is limited.
•The air conditioning system turns off.
Continued operation increases the enginetemperature, causing the engine tocompletely shut down. Your steering andbraking effort increases in this situation.
When the engine temperature cools, you canre-start the engine. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible to minimizeengine damage.
When Fail-Safe Mode Is Activated
WARNING: Fail-safe mode is for useduring emergencies only. Operate yourvehicle in fail-safe mode only as long asnecessary to bring your vehicle to rest ina safe location and seek immediate repairs.When in fail-safe mode, your vehicle willhave limited power, will not be able tomaintain high-speed operation, and maycompletely shut down without warning,potentially losing engine power, powersteering assist, and power brake assist,which may increase the possibility of acrash resulting in serious injury.
WARNING: Do not remove thecoolant reservoir cap when the coolingsystem is hot. Wait 10 minutes for thecooling system to cool down. Cover thecoolant reservoir cap with a thick cloth toprevent the possibility of scalding andslowly remove the cap. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.

Your vehicle has limited engine power whenin the fail-safe mode, drive your vehicle withcaution. Your vehicle does not maintainhigh-speed operation and the engine mayoperate poorly.
Remember that the engine is capable ofautomatically shutting down to preventengine damage. In this situation:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safelypossible and switch the engine off.
2. If you are a member of a roadsideassistance program, we recommend thatyou contact your roadside assistanceservice provider.
3.If this is not possible, wait a short periodfor the engine to cool.
4. Check the coolant level. If the coolantlevel is at or below the minimum mark,add prediluted coolant immediately.
5.When the engine temperature cools, youcan re-start the engine. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible to minimizeengine damage.
Note:Driving your vehicle without repairincreases the chance of engine damage.
Engine Coolant TemperatureManagement (If Equipped)
WARNING: To reduce the risk ofcrash and injury, be prepared that thevehicle speed may reduce and the vehiclemay not be able to accelerate with fullpower until the coolant temperaturereduces.
If you tow a trailer with your vehicle, theengine may temporarily reach a highertemperature during severe operatingconditions, for example ascending a long orsteep grade in high ambient temperatures.
At this time, you may notice the coolanttemperature gauge moves toward the redzone and a message may appear in theinformation display.
You may notice a reduction in vehicle speedcaused by reduced engine power in orderto manage the engine coolant temperature. Your vehicle may enter this mode if certainhigh-temperature and high-load conditionstake place. The amount of speed reductiondepends on vehicle loading, grade andambient temperature. If this occurs, there isno need to stop your vehicle. You cancontinue to drive.
The air conditioning may automatically turnon and off during severe operatingconditions to protect the engine fromoverheating. When the coolant temperaturedecreases to the normal operatingtemperature, the air conditioning turns on.
If the coolant temperature gauge moves fullyinto the red zone, or if the coolanttemperature warning or service engine soonmessages appear in your information display,do the following:
1.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so. Fully apply the parking brake, shiftinto park (P) or neutral (N).
