Your vehicle has electronic control units thathave data recording functionality and theability to permanently or temporarily storedata. This data could include information onthe condition and status of your vehicle,vehicle maintenance requirements, eventsand malfunctions. The types of data that canbe recorded are described in this section.Some of the data recorded is stored in eventlogs or error logs.
Note:Error logs are reset following a serviceor repair.
Note:We may provide information inresponse to requests from law enforcement,other government authorities and thirdparties acting with lawful authority or througha legal process. Such information could beused by them in legal proceedings.
Data recorded includes, for example:
•Operating states of system components,for example fuel level, tire pressure andbattery charge level.
•Vehicle and component status, forexample wheel speed, deceleration,lateral acceleration and seatbelt status.
•Events or errors in essential systems, forexample headlamps and brakes.
•System responses to driving situations,for example airbag deployment andstability control.
•Environmental conditions, for exampletemperature.
Some of this data, when used in combinationwith other information, for example anaccident report, damage to a vehicle oreyewitness statements, could be associatedwith a specific person.
Service Data
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storing diagnosticinformation about your vehicle. Thispotentially includes information about theperformance or status of various systemsand modules in the vehicle, such as engine,throttle, steering or brake systems. In orderto properly diagnose and service yourvehicle, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada in Canada), and service and repairfacilities may access or share among themvehicle diagnostic information received

Introduction
To read data recorded by an event datarecorder, special equipment is required, andaccess to the vehicle or the event datarecorder is needed. In addition to the vehiclemanufacturer, other parties, such as lawenforcement, that have such specialequipment, can read the information if theyhave access to the vehicle or the event datarecorder.
Comfort, Convenience andEntertainment Data
Your vehicle has electronic control units thathave the ability to store data based on yourpersonalized settings. The data is storedlocally in the vehicle or on devices that youconnect to it, for example, a USB drive ordigital music player. You can delete some ofthis data and also choose whether to shareit through the services to which yousubscribe. See Settings (page 445).
Comfort and Convenience Data
Data recorded includes, for example:
•Seat and steering wheel position.
•Climate control settings.
•Radio presets.
Entertainment Data
Data recorded includes, for example:
•Music, videos or album art.
•Contacts and corresponding addressbook entries.

Services That We Provide
If you use our services, we collect and usedata, for example account information,vehicle location and driving characteristics,that could identify you. We transmit this datathrough a dedicated, protected connection.We only collect and use data to enable youruse of our services to which you havesubscribed, with your consent or wherepermitted by law. For additional information,see the terms and conditions of the servicesto which you have subscribed.
Services That Third Parties Provide
We recommend that you review the termsand conditions and data privacy informationfor any services to which you subscribe. Wetake no responsibility for services that thirdparties provide.
Vehicles With a Modem
The modem has a SIM. The modemperiodically sends messages to stayconnected to the cell phone network. Thesemessages could include information thatidentifies your vehicle, the SIM and theelectronic serial number of the modem. Cellphone network service providers could haveaccess to additional information, for examplecell phone network tower identification.
Note:The modem continues to send thisinformation unless you have all added valueservices deactivated. Contact the FordCustomer Relationship Center. Refer to theregional Ford website for contactinformation.

Vehicles With SYNC
Mobile Device Data
If you connect a mobile device to yourvehicle, you can display data from yourdevice on the touchscreen for example,music and album art. You can share yourvehicle data with mobile apps on your devicethrough the system. See Apps (page 442).
The mobile apps function operates by yourconnected device sending data to us in theUnited States. The data is encrypted andincludes the vehicle identification number ofyour vehicle, the SYNC module serialnumber, odometer, enabled apps, usagestatistics and debugging information. Weretain it only as long as necessary to providethe service, to troubleshoot, for continuousimprovement and to offer you products andservices that may be of interest to youaccording to your preferences and whereallowed by law.
If you connect a cell phone to the system,the system creates a profile that links to thatcell phone. The cell phone profile enablesmore mobile features and efficient operation.The profile contains, for example data fromyour phonebook, read and unread textmessages and call history, including historyof calls when your cell phone was notconnected to the system.
If you connect a media device, the systemcreates and retains a media device index ofsupported media content. The system alsorecords a short diagnostic log ofapproximately 10 minutes of all recent systemactivity.
The cell phone profile, media device indexand diagnostic log remain in your vehicleunless you delete them and are generallyaccessible only in your vehicle when youconnect your cell phone or media device. Ifyou no longer plan to use the system or yourvehicle, we recommend you use the masterreset function to erase the storedinformation. See Settings (page 445).
System data cannot be accessed withoutspecial equipment and access to yourvehicle's module.

How Fail-Safe Cooling Works
If the engine begins to overheat, the enginecoolant temperature gauge will move to thered (hot) area and:
A high engine temperaturemessage will appear in theinformation display.
The service engine soon indicatorwill light.
If the engine reaches a presetover-temperature condition, the engine willautomatically switch to alternating cylinderoperation. Each disabled cylinder acts as anair pump and cools the engine.
When this occurs the vehicle will still operate.However:
•The engine power will be limited.
•The air conditioning system will bedisabled.
Continued operation will increase the enginetemperature and the engine will completelyshut down, causing steering and brakingeffort to increase.
Once the engine temperature cools, theengine can be re-started. Take your vehicleto an authorized dealer as soon as possibleto minimize engine damage.
When Fail-Safe Mode Is Activated
WARNING: Fail-safe mode is for useduring emergencies only. Operate yourvehicle in fail-safe mode only as long asnecessary to bring your vehicle to rest in asafe location and seek immediate repairs.When in fail-safe mode, the vehicle will havelimited power, will not be able to maintainhigh-speed operation, and may completelyshut down without warning, potentially losingengine power, power steering assist, andpower brake assist, which may increase thepossibility of a crash resulting in seriousinjury.
WARNING: Never remove the coolantreservoir cap while the engine is running orhot.
You have limited engine power when in thefail-safe mode, so drive your vehicle withcaution. Your vehicle will not be able tomaintain high-speed operation and theengine will run rough. Remember that theengine is capable of completely shuttingdown automatically to prevent enginedamage, therefore:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safelypossible and switch the engine off.
2. Arrange for your vehicle to be taken toan authorized dealer.
3.If this is not possible, wait a short periodfor the engine to cool.
4. Check the coolant level and replenish iflow.
5.Re-start the engine and take your vehicleto an authorized dealer.
Note:Driving your vehicle without repairingthe engine problem increases the chance ofengine damage. Take your vehicle to anauthorized dealer as soon as possible.
