3. While holding the shoulder and lap beltportions together, route the tonguethrough the child restraint according tothe child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions. Be sure the belt webbing isnot twisted.
4. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) for thatseating position until you hear a snap andfeel the latch engage. Make sure thetongue is latched securely by pulling onit.
5. To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulder portionof the belt and pull downward until youpull all of the belt out.
Note:The automatic locking mode isavailable on the front passenger and rearseats.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The belt clicks as it retracts to indicate itis in the automatic locking mode.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ride withyour seatback upright and the lap belt snugand low across the hips.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury,make sure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lap while your vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannot protect thechild from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriously injuredor killed. Do not allow people to ride in anyarea of your vehicle that is not equipped withseats and safety belts. Be sure everyone inyour vehicle is in a seat and using a safetybelt properly.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a safety belt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific safety beltassembly which is made up of one buckleand one tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Never swingthe safety belt around your neck over theinside shoulder. 3) Never use a single beltfor more than one person.
WARNING: When possible, all children12 years old and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.
WARNING: Safety belts and seats canbecome hot in a vehicle that has been closedup in sunny weather; they could burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and buckles beforeyou place a child anywhere near them.
WARNING: Front and rear seatoccupants, including pregnant women,should wear safety belts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle have lapand shoulder safety belts. All occupants ofthe vehicle should always properly wear theirsafety belts, even when an airbagsupplemental restraint system is provided.
The safety belt system consists of:
•lap and shoulder safety belts
•shoulder safety belt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver safety belt)

Seatbelts

Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt length adjustmentto your movements and locking in responseto vehicle movement. For example, if thedriver brakes suddenly or turns a cornersharply, or the vehicle receives an impact ofabout 5 mph (8 km/h) or more, thecombination seatbelts lock to help reduceforward movement of the driver andpassengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif you pull the webbing out too quickly. If theseatbelt retractor locks, slowly lower theheight adjuster to allow the seatbelt toretract. If the retractor does not unlock, pullthe seatbelt out slowly then feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition. For rear seatbelts, recline the rearseat backrest or push the seat backrestcushion away from the seatbelt. Feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder belt automaticallypre-locks. The belt still retracts to removeany slack in the shoulder belt. The automaticlocking mode is not available on the driverseatbelt.
When to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
Use this mode any time a child safety seat,except a booster, is installed in passengerfront or rear seating positions. Properlyrestrain children 12 years old and under in arear seating position whenever possible.See Child Safety (page 20).
How to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until you pull the entire beltout. Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the seatbelt is now in theautomatic locking mode.

Press the button again within three secondsto confirm that all the doors are closed. Thedoors lock again, a tone sounds and thedirection indicators flash if all the doors andthe luggage compartment are closed.
Mislock
If any door or the luggage compartment isopen, or if the hood is open on vehicles withan anti-theft alarm or remote start, a tonesounds and the direction indicators will notflash. You can switch this feature on or off inthe information display. See GeneralInformation (page 108).
Audible and Visual Locking Confirmation
If audible and visual locking confirmation isconfigurable, you can turn it on or off usingthe information display. See GeneralInformation (page 108).
Mechanical Key
The intelligent access key also contains aremovable key blade that you can use to lockand unlock your vehicle. See RemoteControl (page 56).
Turn the top of the key toward the front ofyour vehicle once to lock all doors.
Turn the top of the key toward the rear ofyour vehicle once to unlock the driver dooronly.
Locking the Doors Individually
If the power locks fail to operate, lock thedoors individually using the key in theposition shown.

Opening a Rear Door from Inside
Pull the interior door handle twice to unlockand open a rear door. The first pull unlocksthe door and the second pull will unlatch thedoor.
Activating Intelligent Access
General Information
You can unlock and lock the vehicle withouttaking the keys out of your pocket or pursewhen your intelligent access key is within3 ft (1 m) of your vehicle. Intelligent accessuses a sensor on the back of the door handlefor unlocking and a separate sensor on theface of each door handle for locking.
The system will not function if:
•Your vehicle battery has no charge.
•The key battery has no charge.
•The key frequencies are jammed.
Note:The system may not function if thepassive key is close to metal objects orelectronic devices, for example keys or acell phone.
Note:If the system does not function, usethe key blade to lock and unlock yourvehicle. See Remote Control (page 56).
Unlocking Using Intelligent Access
With your intelligent access key within 3 ft(1 m) of your vehicle, touch the unlock sensoron the back of the door handle for a briefperiod and then pull on the door handle tounlock, being careful to not touch the locksensor at the same time or pulling the doorhandle too quickly. The intelligent accesssystem requires a brief delay to authenticateyour intelligent access key fob.
Locking Using Intelligent Access
With your intelligent access key within 3 ft(1 m) of your vehicle, touch the outer doorhandle lock sensor for approximately onesecond to lock, being careful to not touchthe unlock sensor on the back of the doorhandle at the same time. After locking, youcan immediately pull on the door handle toconfirm locking occurred withoutinadvertently unlocking.
At the Liftgate
Press the exterior liftgate release buttoninside the top of the liftgate pull-cup handle.
Smart Unlocks
This feature helps to prevent you fromunintentionally locking your intelligent accesskey inside the passenger compartment orrear cargo area.

9. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
Note:Do not remove the dipstick when theengine is running.
Note: If the oil level is between themaximum and minimum marks, the oil levelis acceptable. Do not add oil.
Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,000 mi (5,000 km).
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING: Do not add engine oil whenthe engine is hot. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury.
WARNING: Do not remove the fillercap when the engine is running.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additivesbecause they are unnecessary and couldlead to engine damage that may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.
Only use oils certified for gasoline enginesby the American Petroleum Institute (API). An oil with this trademark symbol conformsto the current engine and emission systemprotection standards and fuel economyrequirements of the International LubricantsSpecification Advisory Committee (ILSAC).
To top up the engine oil level do thefollowing:
1. Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2. Remove the engine oil filler cap. SeeUnder Hood Overview (page 288). Turnit counterclockwise and remove it.
3. Add engine oil that meets Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 350). You may haveto use a funnel to pour the engine oil intothe opening.
4. Recheck the oil level.
5. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
6. Replace the engine oil filler cap. Turn itclockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Make sure you install the oil filler capcorrectly.
Note:Soak up any spillage with anabsorbent cloth immediately.
OIL CHANGE INDICATOR RESET
Use the information display controls on thesteering wheel to reset the oil changeindicator.

When a battery replacement is required, youmust use a recommended replacementbattery that matches the electricalrequirements of the vehicle.
Note:If your vehicle has a battery cover,after cleaning or replacing the battery, makesure you reinstall it.
Note:See an authorized dealer for batteryaccess, testing, or replacement.
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect battery performance and durability.This may also affect the performance ofother electrical systems in the vehicle.
If you see any corrosion on the battery orterminals, remove the cables from theterminals and clean with a wire brush. Youcan neutralize the acid with a solution ofbaking soda and water.
Because your vehicle’s engine iselectronically-controlled by a computer,some engine control settings are maintainedby power from the battery. Some enginecomputer settings, like the idle trim and fueltrim strategy, optimize the driveability andperformance of the engine. The clock andradio station presets are also maintained inmemory by power from the low-voltagebattery. These settings are erased when atechnician disconnects and connects thelow-voltage battery.
To restore the settings, do the following:
Note:Until you switch the ignition to the onposition, you will receive a message in yourinformation display stating that your vehicleis not in park.
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
3. Switch off all accessories.
4. Press the brake pedal and start yourvehicle.
5. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature. While the engineis warming up, complete the following:Reset the clock. See Audio Unit (page368). Reset the power windowsbounce-back feature. See PowerWindows (page 95). Reset the radiostation presets. See Audio Unit (page368).
6. Allow the engine to idle for at least oneminute.
7.Drive the vehicle at least 10 mi (16 km) tocompletely relearn the idle trim and fueltrim strategy.
Note:If you do not allow the engine torelearn the idle and fuel trim strategy, theidle quality of your vehicle may be adverselyaffected until the engine computereventually relearns the idle trim and fuel trimstrategy.
Note:Certain features may not operate ifthe battery monitor system is not reset witha scan tool following a jump start or batteryreplacement. Normal electrical accessoryoperation should resume after your vehicleis left undisturbed for 8 hours.
