Restrictions in Handling Keys
When leaving keys with parking lot
and valet attendants, the following
procedures will ensure your vehicle’s
trunk and glove box compartment
can not be opened in your absence. To activate the trunk lock system so
that the trunk can only be opened with
the main key, perform the following:
1. Unlock the glove box by using the
main key (1) then open it (2).
2. Set the trunk lid control button to the LOCK position.
3. Close and lock the glove box using the main key.
When leaving your keys with a park-
ing lot or valet attendant, perform
steps 1 to 3 above, and leave the sub
key with the attendant. In this manner
the sub key can only be used to start
the engine and operate door locks.
Lock release
To release the trunk lock feature,
open the glove box with the main key
and set the trunk lid control button to
the UNLOCK position.
Immobilizer system
Your vehicle is equipped with an
electronic engine immobilizer system
to reduce the risk of unauthorized
vehicle use.
Whenever the ENGINE START/STOP
button is changed to the ON position,
the immobilizer system checks and
verifies if the key is valid or not.
If the key is valid, the engine will
start.
If the key is invalid, the engine will
not start.
✽ ✽ NOTICE
In order to prevent theft of your
vehicle, do not leave spare keys any-
where in your vehicle. Your
Immobilizer password is a customer
unique password and should be kept
confidential. Do not leave this num-
ber anywhere in your vehicle.

Even though the trunk lid control but-
ton is in LOCK, the trunk will still be
propelled upward by mechanical
force if the trunk is manually opened
more than 10 degrees beyond the
fully closed position.
In addition, if the trunk is manually
closed to the secondary latch posi-
tion, the trunk will be electrically
moved to the fully latched position.
✽ ✽
NOTICE
Close the trunk, and keep the trunk
lid control button in the unlock posi-
tion before washing the vehicle in an
automatic car wash.
Emergency Trunk Safety
Release
Your vehicle is equipped with an
Emergency Trunk Safety Release
lever located inside the trunk. When
someone is inadvertently locked in
the trunk, the trunk can be opened
by moving the lever in the direction of
the arrow and pushing the trunk
open.
WARNING
Always keep the Trunk Lid
Control Button in the unlock
position when not in use.
Serious injury or death can
result from unintentional opera-
tion by a child.

You and your passengers must beaware of the location of the
Emergency Trunk Safety Release
lever in this vehicle and how to
open the trunk in case you are
accidentally locked in the trunk.
Your vehicle should be kept locked and the Smart Key should be kept
out of the reach of children.
Parents should teach their children
about the dangers of playing in
trunks.
Use the release lever for emergen- cies only.
WARNING
NEVER allow anyone to occupy
the trunk of the vehicle at any
time. If the trunk is partially or
totally latched and the person is
unable to get out, serious injury
or death could occur due to lack
of ventilation, exhaust fumes
and rapid heat build-up, or
because of exposure to cold
weather conditions. The trunk is
also a highly dangerous loca-
tion in the event of a crash
because it is not a protected
occupant space but is a part of
the vehicle’s crush zone.
WARNING
Make sure that there are no peo-
ple or objects in the path of the
power trunk (or smart trunk)
prior to use. Serious injury,
damage to the vehicle or dam-
age to surrounding objects may
result if contact with the power
trunk (or smart trunk) occurs.

To release EPB (electronic parking
brake) automatically:
Shift lever in P (Park)
With the engine running depress
the brake pedal and shift out of P
(Park) to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
Shift lever in N (Neutral) With the engine running depress
the brake pedal and shift out of N
(Neutral) to R (Reverse) or D
(Drive).
Automatic Transaxle 1. Close the driver's door, engine hood and trunk.
2. Fasten the driver's seat belt.
3. Start the engine.
4. Depress the accelerator pedal while the shift lever is in R
(Reverse), D (Drive) or Sports
mode.
Make sure the brake warning light
goes off.✽ ✽ NOTICE
• For your safety, you can engage
the EPB even though the ignition
switch or engine stop/start button
is in the OFF position, but you
cannot release it.
• For your safety, depress the brake pedal and release the parking
brake manually with the EPB
switch when you drive downhill or
when backing up the vehicle.
Do not follow the above procedure
when driving on a flat level ground.
The vehicle may suddenly move for-
ward.
✽ ✽ NOTICE
If the parking brake warning light is
still on even though the EPB has
been released, have the system
checked by an authorized Kia dealer.
EPB (electronic parking brake) may
be automatically applied when:
The EPB is overheated
Requested by other systems
✽ ✽NOTICE
For EPB (Electronic Parking Brake)
equipped vehicles with [AUTO
HOLD] function used while driving,
if the ignition button has been
turned [OFF], the EPB (Electronic
Parking Brake)
will be engaged automatically.
Therefore, [AUTO HOLD] function
should be turned off before the igni-
tion button is turned off.
CAUTION
Do not drive your vehicle with
the EPB applied. It may causeexcessive brake pad and brakerotor wear.

System warning
“To release EPB, fasten seatbelt, close
door, hood and trunk”
If you try to drive off by depressingthe accelerator pedal with the EPB
applied, but the EPB doesn't
release automatically, a warning
will sound and a message will
appear.
If the driver's seat belt is not fas- tened and the engine hood, driver's
door or trunk is opened, a warning
will sound and a message will
appear.
If there is a problem with the vehi- cle, a warning may sound and a
message may appear.
If the above situation occurs, depress
the brake pedal and release EPB by
pressing the EPB switch. A click or electric brake motor
whine sound may be heard while
operating or releasing the EPB.
These conditions are normal and
indicate that the EPB is functioning
properly.
When leaving your keys with a parking lot attendant or valet, make
sure to inform him/her how to oper-
ate the EPB.
The EPB may malfunction if you drive with the EPB applied.
When you automatically release EPB by depressing the accelerator
pedal, depress it slowly.WARNING- Parking
Brake Use

the parking brake fully engaged
when parked to avoid inadver-
tent movement of the car which
can injure occupants or pedes-
trians.
