30)In the event of an accident or sharp
braking, any object placed on the curtain
may be projected backwards in the
passenger compartment, and risk to hurt
the occupants.
31)Abrupt braking or occasional impacts
may cause sudden movements of the load
with consequent situations of hazard for
the driver and passengers: before setting
off, secure the load tightly using the hooks
provided. For securing use cables, ropes
or belts strong enough to hold the items to
be secured.
WARNING
13)Before tilting the seat backrest fully,
remove any objects laid on it.
14)The dimensions of the platform permit
a maximum capacity of distributed weight
of 70 kg (in position 1) or 40 kg (in position
2): do not load objects with a higher
weight.
15)To avoid damaging the blind, do not
place heavy objects on it.
DUALDRIVE
ELECTRIC POWER
STEERING
(for versions/markets, where provided)
This only operates with the ignition
key turned to MAR and engine running.
Electric power steering allows the
force required at the steering wheel to
be adapted to the driving conditions.
IMPORTANT When turning the ignition
key quickly, full power steering
functionality can be achieved after a
few seconds.
IMPORTANT During parking
manoeuvres requiring a lot of steering,
the steering may become harder; this is
normal and is due to the intervention
of the system to protect the electric
steering motor from overheating. No
repair intervention is needed in this
case. When the car is used again, the
power steering will work normally again.IMPORTANT The Dualdrive electric
power steering provides an electronic
damping effect when approaching
the end of travel. In some manoeuvring
conditions, the steering wheel may
perform an additional small rotation until
reaching its mechanical stop. This
behaviour is normal and is intended to
prevent excessive impacts with the
mechanical components located inside
the device.
POWER STEERING
ACTIVATION/

KNOWING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL
Symbol What it means
amberFIAT CODE SYSTEM FAILURE
The symbol switches on to indicate a failure of the Fiat CODE system. Contact a Fiat
Dealership as soon as possible.
amberPOSSIBLE ICE ON ROAD
The symbol turns on when the outside temperature falls to or below 3°C. In the event of
outside temperature sensor failure, the digits that indicate the value are replaced by
dashes.
amberFUEL LEVEL SENSOR FAILURE
The symbol switches on in the event of fuel level sensor failure. Contact a Fiat Dealership
as soon as possible.
amberFUEL CUT-OFF SYSTEM OPERATION
The symbol switches on in the event of fuel cut-off system intervention.
For the fuel cut-off system reactivation procedure, refer to the description in the “Fuel
cut-off system” section in the “In an emergency” chapter. If it is still not possible to restore
the fuel supply, contact a Fiat Dealership.
amberFUEL CUT-OFF SYSTEM FAILURE
The symbol switches on in the event of fuel cut-off system failure. Contact a Fiat
Dealership as soon as possible.
amberDUALOGIC TRANSMISSION CLUTCH OVERHEATING
(for versions/markets, where provided)
The symbol switches on in the case of Dualogic transmission clutch overheating, after a
particularly demanding use. In this situation, limit setting off and gear shifts or, if necessary,
park (turning off the engine) until conditions are optimal.
61
prevent the retractors from getting
wet: their correct operation is only
guaranteed if water does not get inside;
replace the seat belt when it shows
wear or cuts.
WARNING
64)The pretensioner may be used only
once. Contact a Fiat Dealership to have it
replaced after it has been deployed.
65)Removing or otherwise tampering with
pretensioner and seat belt components
is strictly prohibited. Any intervention
on these components must be performed
by qualified and authorised technicians.
Always contact a Fiat Dealership.
66)For maximum safety, keep the backrest
upright, lean back into it and make sure
the seat belt fits closely across your chest
and pelvis. Always fasten the seat belts
for both the front and rear seats! Travelling
without wearing seat belts will increase
the risk of serious injury and even death in
the event of an accident.
67)If the belt has been subjected to high
levels of stress, for example after an
accident, it should be changed completely
together with the attachments, attachment
fixing screws and the pretensioner. In
fact, even if the belt has no visible defects,
it may have lost its resilience.
WARNING
37)Operations implying impacts, vibrations
or localised heating (over 100°C for a
maximum of six hours) in the area around
the pretensioner may damage or deploy
it. Contact a Fiat Dealership should
intervention be necessary on these
components.
CHILD PROTECTION
SYSTEMS
CARRYING CHILDREN
SAFELY
68) 69) 70) 71) 72) 73) 74)
For optimal protection in the event of an
impact, all occupants must be seated
and wearing adequate restraint
systems, including newborn and other
children! This prescription is
compulsory in all EC countries
according to EC Directive 2003/20/EC.
Children below the height of 1.50
metres and up to 12 years must be
protected with suitable restraint
systems and be seated on the rear
seats.
Statistics on accidents indicate that the
rear seats offer greater safety for
children.
Compared with an adult, a child's head
is larger and heavier in proportion to
their body and the child's muscular and
bone structures are not fully developed.
Therefore, correct restraint systems
other than adult seat belts are
necessary to reduce as much as
possible the risk of injuries in the event
of an accident, braking or sudden
manoeuvre.
82
SAFETY
WARNING
38)The flashing of the warning lightfor
60 seconds after starting or during
prolonged cranking of the engine indicates
a fault with the glow plug heating system.
You can use the vehicle as usual if the
engine starts but you should contact a Fiat
Dealership as soon as possible.
39)It is advisable not to demand maximum
performance from your car (e.g. excessive
acceleration, long distances at maximum
rpm, excessively intense braking, etc.)
when it is first used.
40)When the engine is switched off never
leave the key turned to MAR-ON to prevent
useless current absorption from draining
the battery.
41)Never, under any circumstances, jump
start the engine by pushing, towing or
coasting downhill. This could cause fuel to
flow into the catalytic converter and
damage it beyond repair.
42)A quick burst on the accelerator before
stopping the engine serves no practical
purpose; it wastes fuel and is especially
damaging to turbocharged engines.
WHEN PARKED
Always remove the ignition key when
leaving the car.
When parking and leaving the car,
proceed as follows:
engage a gear (1stgear if facing
uphill or reverse if facing downhill) and
leave the wheels turned;
stop the engine and engage the
handbrake.
Block the wheels with a wedge or a
stone if the car is parked on a steep
slope.
On versions with Dualogic gearbox, 1
st
gear or reverse must be engaged
with the foot on the brake pedal and, if
on a slope, the handbrake must be
operated in order to park safely.
IMPORTANT NEVER leave the car with
the gearbox in neutral (on versions
equipped with Dualogic transmission,
this is indicated by the letter N on
the display).
HANDBRAKE
98) 99)
The handbrake lever is located between
the two front seats.
Handbrake engagement
Pull lever A fig. 87 upwards until the car
is secured. Four or five clicks are
generally enough when the car is on
level ground while ten or eleven may be
required if the car is on a steep slope
and laden: if it is not so, contact a
Fiat Dealership to have it adjusted.
Handbrake disengagement
Slightly raise lever A and hold button B
pressed, checking that the
warning
light switches off in the instrument
panel.

STARTING AND DRIVING
IMPORTANT The function is available at
speeds from 7 km/h to 25 km/h.
IMPORTANT It is important to engage a
gear suitable for the set speed, to
prevent the engine from stalling. While
the “Gravity Control” system is
operating it is always possible to take
control of the car again by pressing the
brake and accelerator pedals. If the
function is not available when an
attempt to activate it made, it could
mean that the brakes are overheated.
In this case, wait a few minutes before
using the function again.
IMPORTANT The function will be
deactivated in case of brake
overheating by gradually releasing the
braking pressure leaving the driver
in control of the car. Deactivation of the
function is indicated by the flashing of
the symbol
on the display (in
combination with a dedicated message)
and acoustic warning. To reactivate
the function, wait for the braking
system to cool down and then operate
on the ring nut located on the central
tunnel again.IMPORTANT The “Gravity Control”
function is deactivated when exceeding
25 km/h and at speeds lower than 50
km/h it remains enabled to be
reactivated when the speed drops
under 25 km/h. In this case, the
indication on the display is switched off
and the LED on the ring stays on. If
the speed exceeds 50 km/h, the
“Gravity Control” function is completely
deactivated and all automatic actions
on the brakes by the function are
disabled. To reactivate it, turn the ring
nut again when the speed is again
below 25 km/h. It is advisable to use
the function in low gears (first, second
and third).
IMPORTANT On flat city streets, it is
advisable to deactivate the “Gravity
Control” function because at speeds
slower than 25 km/h the function could
be reactivated in particular conditions
(setting off, shifting gear or on speed
bumps without using the accelerator
pedal).
PARKING SENSORS
107)47)
SENSORS
The sensors are located in the rear
bumper fig. 99 or fig. 100 (500L
WAGON version) and their function is to
detect the presence of any obstacles
near the rear of the car and inform
the driver through an intermittent
acoustic signal and visual indication on
the instrument panel display.
INDICATIONS ON THE
DISPLAY
The parking system indications appear
on the instrument panel display (see
figure).

WARNING
112)Do not apply any object/plug to the
end of the filler which is not provided
for the car. The use of non-compliant
objects/plugs could cause a pressure
increase inside the tank, resulting in
dangerous situations.
113)Do not bring naked flames or lit
cigarettes near to the fuel filler: fire risk.
Keep your face away from the fuel filler to
prevent breathing in harmful vapours.114)Do not use a mobile phone near the
refuelling pump: risk of fire.
WARNING
49)For diesel engines, only use diesel fuel
for motor vehicles in accordance with
EN 590 European specifications. The use
of other products or mixtures may damage
the engine beyond repair and
consequently invalidate the warranty, due
to the damage caused. If you accidentally
introduce other types of fuel into the tank,
do not start the engine. Empty the tank.
If the engine has been run for even an
extremely limited amount of time, you must
not only drain the fuel tank, but the rest of
the supply circuit as well.
50)If AdBlue® overheats for a prolonged
period inside the tank to over 50 °C (for
example due to direct solar irradiation),
AdBlue® can decompose ammonia
vapours. Ammonia vapours have a
pungent odour when the cap of the
AdBlue® tank is unscrewed, therefore be
careful not to inhale any ammonia vapours
in the tank outlet. In this concentration,
however, the ammonia vapours are not
harmful or dangerous to health.
AdBlue® (UREA)
ADDITIVE FOR
DIESEL EMISSIONS
The car is equipped with an AdBlue®
(UREA) injection system and Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet
emission standards.
These two systems ensure compliance
with the diesel emissions requirements;
at the same time, they ensure
fuel-efficiency, handling, torque and
