beltsandcanhelptoreducetheriskofinjuryto

sidecollision.Theairbagdeploysonlyinsideim-
pactsandonlywhenthevehicleaccelerationreg-
isteredbythecontrolunitishighenough.Ifthis
rateisbelowthereferencevalueprogrammedin-
tothecontrolunit,thesideairbagswillnotbe
triggered,eventhoughthecarmaybebadly
damagedasaresultofthecollision.Itisnotpos-
sibletodefineanairbagtriggeringrangethat
willcover everypossibleangleofimpact,since
thecircumstanceswillvaryconsiderablybetween
onecollisionandanother.Importantfactorsin-
clude,forexample,thenature(hardorsoft)of
theimpactingobject,theangleofimpact,vehicle
