In some situations, such as in cold weather or if the hybrid battery's charge level is too low, thegasoline engine will start instead. The vehicle should not be started with the charg- ing cable connected. However, if the cable can-not be pulled out or if the vehicle incorrectlydetects a cable that is not connected, the vehiclecan be started using an override procedure:
1. Press the brake pedal and turn the start
knob clockwise.
2.
Charge cable Remove before start will
appear in the instrument panel.
3. Turn the start knob clockwise again. 4.
Removed? Turn and hold start knob 7swill appear. Turn the knob clockwise and hold it for 7 seconds to start the vehicle.
Location of the backup reader in the tunnel console.
If the Vehicle key not found message is shown
in the instrument panel at start, place the remote key at the backup reader and then make a newstart attempt.
NOTE
When the remote key is placed in the backup reader, make sure that no other vehicle keys, metal objects or electronic devices (e.g. cellu-lar phones, tablets, laptops or chargers) are inthe backup reader. Multiple vehicle keys closeto each other in the backup reader can dis-rupt their functionality.
If Vehicle start System check, wait is dis-
played in the instrument panel while attempting to start the vehicle, wait until the message disap-pears and try again to start the vehicle.
CAUTION
If the engine has not responded after 3 attempts – wait for 3 minutes before startinga new attempt. Starting capability increases ifthe starter battery is given time to recover.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is discharged.
WARNING
• Always remove the remote key from the passenger compartment when you leavethe vehicle and make sure the ignition is in mode
0.
• Always put the gear selector in
P and
apply the parking brake before leaving the vehicle. Never leave the vehicle unsu-pervised while the engine is running.
• Always open the garage door fully andmake sure that ventilation is very goodbefore starting the engine in a garage. The exhaust fumes produced by the vehi-cle contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very toxic.
WARNING
Never
remove the remote control key from
the vehicle while driving.
WARNING
Always take along the remote control key when leaving the vehicle and make sure thatthe vehicle electrical system is in ignition mode 0 – especially if there are children in
the vehicle.

Ignition modes
The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functions availa-ble.
To enable the use of a limited number of func- tions when the engine is not running, the ignition can be put in one of three different levels: 0, I
and II. These levels are referred to as "ignition
modes" in the Owner's Manual. The following table shows which functions are available in each ignition mode:

TOP TIER Detergent GasolineVolvo endorses the use of "TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline" where available to help maintainengine performance and reliability. TOP TIERDetergent Gasoline meets a new standard jointlyestablished by leading automotive manufacturesto meet the needs of today's advanced engines.Qualifying gasoline retailers (stations) will, inmost cases, identify their gasoline as having metthe "TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline" standards.
NOTE
Information about TOP TIER Detergent Gaso- line is available at www.toptiergas.com.
NOTE
When switching to higher octane fuel or changing gasoline brands, it may be neces-sary to fill the tank more than once before adifference in engine operation is noticeable.
Fuel FormulationsDo not use gasoline that contains lead or manga- nese as a knock inhibitor, and do not use leadadditives. Besides damaging the exhaust emis-sion control systems on your vehicle, lead hasbeen strongly linked to certain forms of cancer. Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent.Unburned benzene has been strongly linked tocertain forms of cancer. If you live in an areawhere you must fill your own gas tank, take pre-cautions. These may include: •
standing upwind away from the filler nozzle while refueling
• refueling only at gas stations with vaporrecovery systems that fully seal the mouth ofthe filler neck during refueling
• wearing neoprene gloves while handling afuel filler nozzle.
Use of AdditivesWith the exception of gas line antifreeze duringwinter months, do not add solvents, thickeners, orother store-bought additives to your vehicle'sfuel, cooling, or lubricating systems. Overuse maydamage your engine, and some of these additivescontain organically volatile chemicals. Do notneedlessly expose yourself to these chemicals.
WARNING
Never carry a cell phone that is
switched on
while refueling your vehicle. If the phone rings, this may cause a spark that could ignite gaso-line fumes, resulting in fire and injury.

Audio, media and Internet
The audio and media system consists of a media player and a radio. A cellular phone can also beconnected through Bluetooth to use hands-freefunctions or play music in the vehicle. When thevehicle is connected to the Internet, it is alsopossible to use apps to play media.
Audio and media overview
The functions can be controlled using voice com- mands, the steering wheel keypad or the centerdisplay. The number of speakers and amplifiersvaries depending on the audio system installed inthe vehicle.
System updates
The audio and media system is continuously improved. When the vehicle has an Internet con-nection, system updates can be downloaded foroptimal functionality; see support.volvocars.com.

Sound settings
The audio system is precalibrated for optimal sound reproduction but these settings can bepersonalized.
The system's volume is normally adjusted using the volume control below the center display orthe right-side steering wheel keypad. Thisapplies, for example, when playing music or theradio or during phone calls and active traffic mes-sages.
Optimal sound reproductionThe audio system is precalibrated for optimalsound reproduction using digital signal process-ing. This calibration takes into account speakers, amplifiers, passenger compartment acoustics, lis-tener position, etc. for each combination of vehi-cle model and audio system. There is also adynamic calibration that takes into account thevolume control setting and the vehicle's speed.
Sound settings as needed
In Top view under SettingsSound, the fol-
lowing settings can be selected:
•
Tone — personal preference for bass, treble,
equalizer for example.
•
Balance - balance between right/left and
front/rear speakers.
•
System Volumes – adjusts volume in the
various systems of the car, e.g. Voice
Control, Park Assist and Phone Ringtone.

Active noise suppression *Some vehicles are equipped with an active noise suppression function that reduces engine noisein the passenger compartment using the audiosystem. Microphones in the ceiling liner detect distracting noise and the audio system sends outa counteracting sound to help reduce the unwan-ted noise.
