ECO
• Adapt the vehicle for more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly driving with Eco mode.
In this mode, the Start/Stop function is activatedand certain climate settings are reduced. The instrument panel has an ECO gauge to facili- tate fuel-efficient driving.
DYNAMIC
• Dynamic mode is designed to provide sport- ier driving characteristics and a faster accel-eration response.
Gear shifting will be faster and more distinct andthe transmission will prioritize gears with a highertraction force. Steering response is faster and suspension is stiffer 4
to help reduce body roll when cornering.
The Start/Stop function is deactivated.
INDIVIDUAL
• Customizes drive mode to personal preferen- ces.
Select one of the drive modes as a basis andadjust the settings to achieve your preferred driv- ing characteristics. These settings will be stored in your driver profile. Individual drive mode is only available if it has been activated in the center display.Settings view 5

Changing drive mode *
The drive mode is changed using the control in the tunnel console.
Select the drive mode that is best suited to the current driving conditions. Keep in mind that notall drive modes are available in all situations. To change drive mode:
1. Press the DRIVE MODE control.
> A pop-up menu will appear in the center display.
2. Roll the wheel upward or downward to the desired drive mode.
3. Press the drive mode control or tap its button in the center display to confirm the selection.
> The selected drive mode is shown in theinstrument panel. If a drive mode is grayed out in the pop-up menu, it cannot be selected.

ECO drive mode
The Eco drive mode optimizes the vehicle's driv- ing characteristics for more fuel-efficient andeco-friendly driving.
Use this mode to save fuel and promote eco- friendly driving. When ECO mode is activated, the following cha- racteristics are modified:
• The automatic transmission's shifting points.
• Engine control and accelerator pedalresponse.
• Eco Coast functionality is activated andengine braking is disabled when the acceler-ator pedal is released at speeds between65 and 140 km/h (40 and 87 mph).
• Some of the climate system settings will bereduced or switched off.
• Information will be shown in the ECO gaugein the instrument panel to help promotemore eco-friendly and economical driving.
Coast function Eco CoastEco Coast essentially deactivates engine braking,allowing the vehicle's kinetic energy to be used to roll greater distances. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the transmission is auto- matically disengaged from the engine. Enginespeed is reduced to idling speed to reduce fuelconsumption.

422 This function is most effective in driving situa- tions where the vehicle can roll freely for a longdistance, e.g. on roads with slight downgrades orwhen a decrease in speed is anticipated, such aswhen approaching an area with a lower speedlimit.
Activating Eco Coast
The function is activated when the accelerator pedal is fully released and the following condi-tions are met:
• Eco drive mode is activated.
• The gear selector is in
D.
• The vehicle's speed is approximately65-140 km/h (40-87 mph).
• The gradient of the downgrade is less thanapproximately 6%.
COASTING will be displayed in the instrument
panel when Eco Coast is being used.
Limitations
Eco Coast is not available if:
• The engine and/or transmission are not at normal working temperatures.
• The gear selector is moved from
D to manual
shifting mode.
• The vehicle's speed is not within the65-140 km/h (40-87 mph) range.
• The gradient of the downgrade is more thanapproximately 6%. •
The steering wheel paddles

for manual shifting.
Deactivating and turning off Eco Coast
In certain situations, it may be advisable to deac- tivate or turn off Eco Coast so that engine brak-ing can be used. These situations might includedriving down steep hills or before passinganother vehicle to help ensure this can be doneas safely as possible. Deactivate Eco Coast by:
• Pressing the accelerator or brake pedal.
• Moving the gear selector to manual mode.
• Using the steering wheel paddles
* to shift.
Turn off Eco Coast by:
• Switching drive mode
* or switching off drive
mode Eco in Function view.
It is possible to roll short distances even without Eco Coast in order to help conserve fuel. How-ever, for the best fuel economy, Eco Coast shouldbe activated and used to roll longer distances.
Cruise control Eco CruiseWhen cruise control is activated in the Eco drivemode, the vehicle's acceleration and decelerationwill be slower than in other drive modes to helpfurther conserve fuel. Because of this, the vehi-cle's actual speed may be slightly above or belowthe set speed. •
On a level road, the vehicle's actual speedmay differ from the set speed when cruisecontrol is active and the vehicle is coasting.
• On a steep uphill gradient, the vehicle'sspeed is reduced until the transmissiondownshifts. Reduced acceleration is then ini-tiated in order to reach the set speed.
• On a downhill gradient in which the vehicle iscoasting, the vehicle's actual speed may beslightly above or below the set speed. Thefunction uses engine braking to keep the setspeed. If necessary, the normal brakes arealso applied.
ECO gauge in the instrument panelThe ECO gauge indicates how economical cur-rent driving is:
• A low reading in the green area of the gaugeindicates economical driving.
• A high reading is shown when driving is noteconomical, e.g. heavy braking or rapid accel-eration.
The ECO gauge also has an indicator showinghow a reference driver would drive in the samedriving situation. This is shown by the shortpointer in the gauge.

Conditions for the Start/Stopfunction Certain conditions must be met for Start/Stop to function.
If any condition is not met, this will be indicated in the instrument panel.
The engine does not auto-stopThe engine will not auto-stop if: •the vehicle has not reached a speed of ca 10 km/h (6 mph) after starting.
• after several auto-stops, the speed mustagain exceed approximately ca 10 km/h(6 mph) before the next auto-stop.
• the driver's seat belt is unbuckled.
• the start battery's charge is below the mini-mum level.
• the engine is not running at its normal oper-ating temperature.
• the ambient temperature is under approxi-mately -5 °C (23 °F) or over approximately30 °C (86 °F).
• windshield heating is activated.
• the climate system settings and the actualclimate in the passenger compartment differ.
• the vehicle is backing up.
• the start battery's temperature is above orbelow the permitted limits.
• the driver is turning the steering wheel hard. •
the road gradient is very steep.
• the hood is open.
• driving at high altitude and the engine hasnot reached its normal operating tempera-ture.
• ABS has been activated.
• hard braking (even if the ABS system hasnot been activated).
• many starts during a short period of timehave triggered the starter motor's overheat-ing protection.
• a trailer's electrical system is connected tothe vehicle's electrical system.
• the transmission is not running at its normaloperating temperature.
• The gear selector is in mode
M (±).
The engine does not auto-startThe engine will not auto-start after an auto-stopif: • the driver is not wearing a seat belt, the gear selector is in the
P position and the driver's
door is open. The engine must be started normally.
The engine auto-starts while the brake
pedal is depressed
In the following situations, the engine will auto-start even if the brake pedal is depressed: •
High levels of condensation on the inside ofthe windows.
• the climate system settings and the actualclimate in the passenger compartment differ.
• Electrical current consumption is temporarilyhigh or the start battery's charge is below theminimum level.
• The brake pedal is pumped repeatedly.
• The hood is open.
• The vehicle begins to roll or increases speedslightly if the engine auto-stopped before thevehicle was at a standstill.
• The driver's seat belt is unbuckled with the gear selector in the
D or N positions.
• The gear selector is moved from
D to R or M
( ± ).
• The driver's door is opened with the gearselector in
D. An audible signal and a text
message informs the driver that the ignition is on.
WARNING
Do not open the hood if the engine has auto- stopped. Turn off the engine by switching offthe ignition before lifting the hood.

CAUTION
•Engine damage could occur if water enters the air cleaner.
• If water enters the transmission, the lubri-cating ability of the oils is reduced andthe service life of these systems is short-ened.
• Damage to any component, engine,transmission, turbocharger, differential orits internal components caused by flood-ing, vapor lock or insufficient oil is notcovered under warranty.
• If the engine stalls while the vehicle is inwater, do not attempt to restart it. Havethe vehicle towed out of the water to aworkshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended. Risk of engine failure.

Opening/closing the fuel filler door The vehicle must be unlocked before the fuel filler door can be opened 7

An arrow next to the fuel pump symbol in the instrument panelindicates the side of the vehicleon which the fuel filler door islocated.
1. Open the fuel filler door by pressing lightly
on its rear edge.
2. After refueling, press the fuel filler door lightly to close it.

Refueling
The fuel tank is equipped with a fuel filling sys- tem without a cover.
Refueling the vehicle at a service station
Refueling is done as follows.
1. Turn off the engine and open the fuel filler door.
2. Select a fuel approved for use in the vehicle. For more information on approved fuels, see the section on "Gasoline".
3. Insert the pump's nozzle into the fuel filler pipe's opening. There are two flaps justinside the fuel filler pipe and the pump's noz-zle must push both of these flaps openbefore fuel can be added.

Emission controls
Three-way catalytic converter
•Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involving theelectrical, fuel or distributor ignition systems,may cause unusually high three-way catalyticconverter temperatures. Do not continue tooperate your vehicle if you detect enginemisfire, noticeable loss of power or otherunusual operating conditions, such as engineoverheating or backfiring. A properly tunedengine will help avoid malfunctions thatcould damage the three-way catalytic con-verter.
• Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, which cancome into contact with the hot exhaust sys-tem and cause such materials to ignite undercertain wind and weather conditions.
• Excessive starter cranking (in excess of oneminute), or an intermittently firing or floodedengine can cause three-way catalytic con-verter or exhaust system overheating.
• Remember that tampering or unauthorizedmodifications to the engine, the Engine Con-trol Module, or the vehicle may be illegal andcan cause three-way catalytic converter orexhaust system overheating. This includes:altering fuel injection settings or compo-nents, altering emission system components or location or removing components, and/orrepeated use of leaded fuel.NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. Readings are fedinto a control module that continuously monitorsengine functions and controls fuel injection. Theratio of fuel to air into the engine is continuouslyadjusted for efficient combustion to help reduceharmful emissions.

Overheating of engine andtransmission
In demanding driving conditions, such as driving in mountainous areas or hot weather, there is arisk of the engine or transmission overheating,especially when carrying heavy loads.
• Engine power may be temporarily limited.
• Remove any auxiliary lights mounted in front of the grille when driving in hot weather.
• If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high, a warning symbolwill appear in the instrument panel along with the message

It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to operate for a short time after the engine isswitched off.

Battery drain The electrical functions in the vehicle drain the battery to varying degrees. Avoid using ignitionmode II when the engine is switched off. Use
ignition mode I instead, as this uses less electri-
cal current.
Note that certain accessories may also drain power from the electrical system. Do not usefunctions that use a lot of electrical current whenthe engine is turned off. Examples of such func-tions are:
• blower
• headlights
• windshield wipers
• audio system (especially at high volume).
If the starter battery voltage is low, a message isshown in the driver display. The vehicle's energy-saving function will then turn off or reduce certainfunctions, such as the blower and/or the audio system.
–Charge the battery by starting the engine and let it run for at least 15 minutes (drivingcharges the battery faster than letting theengine idle).

CAUTION
•Bumper-attached trailer hitches must not be used on Volvos, nor should safetychains be attached to the bumper.
• Trailer hitches attaching to the vehiclerear axle must not be used.
• Never connect a trailer's hydraulic brakesystem directly to the vehicle brake sys-tem, nor a trailer's lighting system directlyto the vehicle lighting system. Consultyour nearest authorized Volvo retailer forcorrect installation.
• When towing a trailer, the trailer's safetychains or wire must be correctly fastenedto the attachment points provided in thetrailer hitch on the vehicle. The safetychain or wire must never be fastened toor wound around the towing ball.
NOTE
The optional detachable trailer hitch may not be available in all markets or on all models.Consult your Volvo retailer.
NOTE
Extreme weather conditions, towing a trailer, driving at high altitudes and fuel quality arefactors that significantly increase a vehicle'sfuel consumption.
Trailer weights
WARNING
Please adhere to the recommendations provi- ded for trailer weight. If the recommendationsare not followed, the vehicle and trailer maybe difficult to control during evasive maneu-vers and braking.
NOTE
The specified maximum trailer weights are those permitted by Volvo. National vehicleregulations may set additional restrictions ontrailer weight and speed. The trailer hitchesmay be certified for higher towing weightsthan the vehicle is permitted to tow.
Self-leveling suspension
*The vehicle's self-leveling system attempts to keep the vehicle at a constant level, regardless ofload (up to the maximum permitted weight).When the vehicle is stationary, the rear end of thevehicle will be slightly lowered, which is normal.
Driving in hilly terrain or hot weatherIn certain conditions, there is a risk of overheat-ing when driving with a trailer. If overheating ofthe engine and drive system is detected, a warn-ing symbol will illuminate in the instrument panelalong with a message. The automatic transmission selects the optimalgear for the current load and engine speed.
Steep inclines
Do not lock the automatic transmission into a higher gear than what the engine can handle

is not always preferable to drive in high gears at low rpm.
Parking on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Apply the parking brake.3. Put the gear selector in P.
4. Release the brake pedal.Put chocks behind the wheels when the vehicle is parked on a hill with a trailer attached.
Starting on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal. 2. Put the gear selector in D.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Release the brake pedal and start driving.
