Volvo and the environment Volvo is committed to the well being of its cus- tomers. As a natural part of this commitment, wecare about the environment in which we all live.Concern for the environment means an everydayinvolvement in reducing our environmentalimpact.
Volvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which means we consider the over-all environmental impact of a product throughoutits complete life cycle. In this context, design, pro-duction, product use, and recycling are all impor-tant considerations. In production, Volvo haspartly or completely phased out several chemicalsincluding CFCs, lead chromates, asbestos, andcadmium; and reduced the number of chemicalsused in our plants 50% since 1991. Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-way catalytic converter with aLambda sond, now called the heated oxygen sen-sor, in 1976. The current version of this highlyefficient system reduces emissions of harmfulsubstances (CO, HC, NOx) from the exhaust pipeby approximately 95 – 99% and the search toeliminate the remaining emissions continues.Volvo is the only automobile manufacturer tooffer CFC-free retrofit kits for the air conditioningsystem of all models as far back as the 1975model 240. Advanced electronic engine controlsand cleaner fuels are bringing us closer to ourgoal. In addition to continuous environmentalrefinement of conventional gasoline-poweredinternal combustion engines, Volvo is activelylooking at advanced technology alternative-fuelvehicles. When you drive a Volvo, you become our partner in the work to lessen the car's impact on theenvironment. To reduce your vehicle's environ-mental impact, you can:
• Maintain proper air pressure in your tires.Tests have shown decreased fuel economywith improperly inflated tires.
• Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule in your Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet.
• Drive at a constant speed whenever possible.
• See a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible for inspectionif the check engine (malfunction indicator)light illuminates, or stays on after the vehiclehas started.
• Properly dispose of any vehicle-related wastesuch as used motor oil, used batteries, brakepads, etc.
• When cleaning your vehicle, please use gen-uine Volvo car care products. All Volvo carcare products are formulated to be environ-mentally friendly.

Function check
All indicator and warning symbols light up in igni- tion mode II or when the engine is started. When
the engine has started, all the symbols should go out except the parking brake symbol, which onlygoes out when the brake is disengaged. If the engine does not start or if the function check is carried out in ignition mode II, all sym-
bols go out after 5 seconds except the malfunc- tion indicator light, which may indicate a fault inthe vehicle's emissions system, and the symbolfor low oil pressure. Some of the symbols shown may not be available in all markets or models.

A
Certain engines do not use this symbol to indicate low oil pres- sure. On these models, a text message will be displayed on theinstrument panel instead, see Engine compartment – engine oil(p. 339).
B The symbol is Park only on models with the optional digital
instrument panel.
Low oil pressure
If the light comes on while driving, stop the vehi- cle, stop the engine immediately, and check theengine oil level. Add oil if necessary. If the oil level is normal and the light stays on after restart, have the vehicle towed to the nearest trained andqualified Volvo service technician.
Parking brake applied
This symbol flashes while the brake is being applied and then glows steadily when the parkingbrake has been set. See Parking brake – general information (p. 280) for more information about using the parkingbrake.
Airbags – SRS
If this light comes on while the vehicle is being driven, or remains on for longer than approxi-mately 10 seconds after the vehicle has beenstarted, the SRS system's diagnostic functionshave detected a fault in a seat belt lock or pre-tensioner, a front airbag, side impact airbag,and/or an inflatable curtain. Have the system(s)inspected by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible. See Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) (p. 33) for more information about the airbag sys-tem.
Seat belt reminder
This symbol comes on for approximately 6 sec- onds if the driver has not fastened his or her seatbelt.
Generator not charging
This symbol comes on during driving if a fault has occurred in the electrical system. Contact anauthorized Volvo workshop.

Engine temperature
Engine overheating can result from low oil or coolant levels, towing or hard driving at high heatand altitude, or mechanical malfunction. Engineoverheating will be signaled with text and a redwarning triangle in the middle of the instrumentdisplay. The exact text will depend on the degree of overheating. It may range from
High engine
temp Reduce speed to High engine temp
Stop engine. If appropriate, other messages,
such as Coolant level low, Stop safely will
also be displayed. If your engine does overheat so that you must stop the engine, always allowthe engine to cool before attempting to check oiland coolant levels. See Engine compartment – coolant (p. 342) for more information.
Fault in brake system
If this symbol lights, the brake fluid level may be too low. Stop the vehicle in a safe place andcheck the level in the brake fluid reservoir, seeEngine compartment – brake fluid (p. 343). If the level in the reservoir is below MIN, the vehicle
should be transported to an authorized Volvo workshop to have the brake system checked. If the
and symbols come on at
the same time, there may be a fault in the brake force distribution system. 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off
the engine.
2. Restart the engine.
• If both symbols extinguish, continue driving.
• If the symbols remain on, check the level inthe brake fluid reservoir, see Engine com-partment – brake fluid (p. 343). If the brakefluid level is normal but the symbols are stilllit, the vehicle can be driven, with great care,to an authorized Volvo workshop to have thebrake system checked.
• If the level in the reservoir is below
MIN, the
vehicle should be transported to an author-ized Volvo workshop to have the brake sys-tem checked.
WARNING
• If the fluid level is below the
MIN mark in
the reservoir or if a warning message is displayed in the text window: DO NOT
DRIVE . Have the vehicle towed to a
trained and qualified Volvo service techni- cian and have the brake system inspec-ted.
• If the
and symbols are
on at the same time, there is a risk of reduced vehicle stability.
Warning symbol
The red warning symbol lights up to indicate a problem related to safety and/or drivability. Amessage will also appear in the instrument panel. The symbol remains visible until the fault hasbeen rectified but the text message can be cleared with the OK button, see Information dis-
play – menu controls (p. 116). The warning sym- bol can also come on in conjunction with othersymbols. Action:
1. Stop in a safe place. Do not drive the vehicle further.
2. Read the information on the display. Imple- ment the action in accordance with the mes- sage in the display. Clear the message using OK.

WARNING
•Always remove the remote key from the ignition slot when leaving the vehicle and ensure that the ignition in mode
0 (see
Ignition modes (p. 82) for information about the ignition modes).
• On vehicles with the optional keylessdrive, never remove the remote key fromthe vehicle while it is being driven ortowed.
• Always place the gear selector in Parkand apply the parking brake before leav-ing the vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunattended with the engine running.
• Always open garage doors fully beforestarting the engine inside a garage toensure adequate ventilation. The exhaustgases contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very poisonous.
NOTE
•
After a cold start, idle speed may be noticeably higher than normal for a shortperiod. This is done to help bring compo-nents in the emission control system totheir normal operating temperature asquickly as possible, which enables themto control emissions and help reduce the vehicle's impact on the environment 3
.
CAUTION
• When starting in cold weather, the auto- matic transmission may shift up at slightlyhigher engine speeds than normal untilthe automatic transmission fluid reachesnormal operating temperature.
• Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. Oil flow may not reachsome lubrication points fast enough toprevent engine damage.
• The engine should be idling when youmove the gear selector. Never accelerateuntil after you feel the transmissionengage. Accelerating immediately afterselecting a gear will cause harsh engage-ment and premature transmission wear.
• Selecting
P or N when idling at a stand-
still for prolonged periods of time will helpprevent overheating of the automatictransmission fluid.
Related information
• Switching off the engine (p. 260)
3
If the gear selector is in the D or R positions and the car is not moving, engine speed (rpm) will be lower and it will take longer for the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
STARTING AND DRIVING

Driving through water
The vehicle should be driven with extreme cau- tion if it is necessary to drive through standingwater.
The vehicle can be driven through water up to a depth of approximately 10 in. (25 cm), (V60Cross Country: approximately 12 in. (30 cm)) atwalking speed to help prevent water from enter-ing the differential and the transmission. Waterreduces the oil's lubricating capacity and mayshorten the service life of these components.
• Take particular care when driving throughflowing water.
• Clean the electrical connections for trailerwiring after driving in mud or water.
• When driving through water, maintain lowspeed and do not stop in the water.
WARNING
•Avoid driving through standing or rushing water. Doing so can be dangerous and itmay also be difficult to determine theactual depth of the water.
• If water cannot be avoided, after drivingthrough the water, press lightly on thebrake pedal to ensure that the brakes arefunctioning normally. Water or mud canmake the brake linings slippery, resultingin delayed braking effect.
CAUTION
•Engine damage will occur if water is drawn into the air cleaner.
• If the vehicle is driven through waterdeeper than approximately 10 in.(25 cm), (V60 Cross Country: approxi-mately 12 in. (30 cm)), water may enterthe differential and the transmission. Thisreduces the oil's lubricating capacity andmay shorten the service life of thesecomponents.
• Damage to any components, the engine, transmission, turbo-charger, differential orits internal components caused by flood-ing, vapor lock or insufficient oil is notcovered under warranty.
• Do not allow the vehicle to stand in waterup to the door sills longer than absolutelynecessary. This could result in electricalmalfunctions.
• If the engine has been stopped while thevehicle is in water, do not attempt torestart it. Have the vehicle towed out ofthe water.
Related information
•Towing the vehicle (p. 295)
• Towing by tow truck (p. 296)
Engine and cooling system
Under special conditions, for example when driv- ing in hilly terrain, extreme heat or with heavyloads, there is a risk that the engine and coolingsystem will overheat.
Proceed as follows to avoid overheating the engine.
• Maintain a low speed when driving with atrailer up long, steep hills. For information, see Towing a trailer (p. 292)
• Do not turn the engine off immediately whenstopping after a hard drive.
WARNING
The cooling fan may start or continue to oper- ate (for up to 6 minutes) after the engine hasbeen switched off.
• Remove any auxiliary lights from in front of the grille when driving in hot weather condi-tions.
• Do not exceed engine speeds of 4500 rpm ifdriving with a trailer in hilly terrain. The oiltemperature could become too high.
