Back-up starting
Should your vehicle not detect the electronic key in the recognition zone, because the remote control battery is flat, a back-up reader is provided to the left, behind the steering wheel to allow starting.
F Press the "START/STOP" button.The engine starts.
If the remote control is no longer in the recognition zone when you close a door or when you (later) request switching off the engine, a message appears in the instrument panel.

F If you want to force switching off the engine, press and hold the "START/STOP" button for about 3 seconds, then contact an authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
F If your vehicle has a manual gearbox, place the gear lever in neutral then fully depress the clutch pedal.
F If your vehicle has an automatic gearbox, place the selector at position P then press the brake pedal firmly.
F If your vehicle has an electronic gearbox, place the selector at position N then press the brake pedal firmly.
In the event of an emergency only and with the vehicle stationary, you can switch off the engine.
To do this, press and hold the "START/STOP" button for about 3 seconds.In this case the steering column locks as soon as the vehicle stops.

Gear efficiency indicator
Depending on the driving situation and your vehicle's equipment, the system may advise you to skip one or more gears.You can follow this instruction without going through the intermediate gears.
- You press the accelerator pedal.
- You are in third gear.
- The system may suggest that you engage a higher gear.
The information appears in the instrument panel in the form of an arrow.On vehicles with manual gearbox, the arrow may be accompanied by the recommended g e a r.
The system adapts its gear change recommendation according to the driving conditions (gradient, load, ...) and the demands of the driver (power, acceleration, braking, ...).The system never suggests:
- engaging first gear,- engaging reverse gear.
System which reduces fuel consumption by recommending the most suitable gear.
Example:
On certain Diesel versions with manual gearbox, the system may suggest changing into neutral (N is displayed in the instrument panel) so that the engine can go into standby (STOP mode with Stop & Start), in certain driving conditions.
This function cannot be deactivated.
The gear engagement recommendations must not be considered compulsory.This is because the configuration of
the road, traffic density and safety remain impor tant factors in the choice of the best gear.The gear efficiency indicator system does not replace the need for vigilance on the part of the driver.

With the ignition on, the flashing of A or AUTO, accompanied by an audible signal and a message, indicates a malfunction of the gearbox.
Operating fault
Have it checked by an authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Stopping the vehicle
Before switching off the engine, you can:- move to position N to engage neutral,or- leave the gear engaged; in this case, it will not be possible to move the vehicle.In both cases, you must apply the parking brake to immobilise the vehicle.
At low speed, if reverse gear is requested, the N indicator flashes and the gearbox goes into neutral automatically. To engage reverse, move the selector to position N, then position R.
When immobilising the vehicle, with the engine running, you must move the selector to neutral N.Before doing anything under the bonnet ensure that the selector is in neutral N
and that the parking brake is applied.
Always press the brake pedal when starting the engine.In all parking situations, you must apply the parking brake to immobilise the vehicle.
To engage reverse gear, the vehicle must be immobilised with your foot on the brake pedal.

Stop & StartGoing into engine
STOP mode
If your vehicle has a manual gearbox, its speed must be below 12 mph (20 km/h) or stationary (depending on engine); the "ECO" indicator lamp comes on in the instrument panel and the engine goes into standby automatically when you place the gear lever in
neutral and you release the clutch pedal.
For your comfort, during parking manoeuvres, STOP mode is not available for a few seconds after coming out of reverse gear.Stop & Start does not affect the functionality of the vehicle, such as for example, braking, power steering...A slight delay between the vehicle stopping and the engine cutting out may be noticed.
If your vehicle is fitted with Stop & Start, a time counter calculates the time spent in
STOP mode during a journey.It resets to zero every time the ignition is switched on.
Stop & Start time counter
The Stop & Start system puts the engine temporarily into standby - STOP mode - during stops in the traffic (red lights, traffic jams, or other...). The engine restarts automatically - START mode - as soon as you want to move off. The restart takes place instantly, quickly and silently.Per fect for urban use, the Stop & Start system reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions as well as the noise level when stationary.
If your vehicle has an automatic gearbox and the vehicle is stationary, the "ECO" indicator lamp comes on and the engine goes into standby automatically when you press the brake pedal or place the gear selector in position N.
If your vehicle has an electronic gearbox and the vehicle's speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h), the "ECO" indicator lamp comes on and the engine goes into standby automatically when you press the brake pedal or place the gear selector in position N.

Never refuel with the engine in STOP mode; you must switch off the ignition with the button.

Going into engine
START mode
START mode is invoked automatically in certain temporary conditions (examples: battery charge, engine temperature, braking assistance, air conditioning setting) to assure correct operation of the system and mainly when:- you open the driver's door,
- you open a sliding side door,- you unfasten the driver's seat belt,- the speed of the vehicle exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h) or 2 mph (3 km/h) (depending on the engine) with a manual gearbox,- the speed of the vehicle exceeds 2 mph (3 km/h) with an automatic gearbox,
Special cases: START invoked automatically
In this case the "ECO" warning lamp flashes for a few seconds, then goes off.
This operation is perfectly normal.
If your vehicle has a manual gearbox, the "ECO" indicator lamp goes off in the instrument panel and the engine restarts automatically when you fully depress the clutch pedal.
If your vehicle has an automatic gearbox, the "ECO" lamp goes off in the instrument panel and the engine restarts automatically when:- you release the brake pedal with the gear selector in position D or M,- you are in position N with the brake pedal released and you move the gear selector to position D or M,- you engage reverse.
If your vehicle has an electronic gearbox, the "ECO" lamp goes off in the instrument panel and the engine restarts automatically when:- you release the brake pedal with the gear selector in position A or M,- you are in position N with the brake pedal released and you move the gear selector to position A or M,- you enegage reverse.
Special cases: STOP mode not available
STOP mode is not invoked in certain temporary conditions (examples: battery charge, engine temperature, braking assistance, ambient temperature) to assure correct operation of the system and mainly when:- the vehicle is on a steep slope (rising or falling),
- the driver's door is open,- a sliding side door is open,- the driver's seat belt is not fastened,- the vehicle has not exceeded 6 mph (10 km/h) since the last engine start by the driver,- the electric parking brake is applied or being applied,- the engine is needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in the passenger compartment,- demisting is active.
In this case, the "ECO" warning lamp flashes for a few seconds then goes off.
This operation is perfectly normal.

Deactivation / Activation
With / Without audio system
F Press the button, its indicator lamp comes on, the system is deactivated.
F Press this button, the indicator lamp goes off, the system is activated
To deactivate the system:
With the touch screen
In the Driving menu, activate/deactivate "Stop & Star t system".
The system is reactivated automatically every time the engine is started by the driver.
If the system has been deactivated in STOP mode, the engine restarts immediately.
Opening the bonnetBefore doing anything under the bonnet, deactivate the Stop & Start system to avoid the risk of injury related to an automatic change to S TA R T m o d e .
Driving on flooded roads
Before driving through a flooded road, it is strongly recommended that you deactivate the Stop & Start system.For more information on Driving advice, particularly on flooded roads, refer to the corresponding section.

The Stop & Start system requires a 12 V battery with a special specification and technology.
The warning lamp in this button flashes and a message appears,
accompanied by an audible signal.
In the event of a fault with the system, this warning lamp flashes in the instrument panel.All work on this type of battery must be done by an authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.For more information on the 12 V batter y, refer to the corresponding section.

Fuel tank
Opening
If your vehicle is fitted with Stop & Start, never refuel with the engine in STOP mode; you must switch off the ignition using the key, or the START/STOP
button if your vehicle has Smart Entry & Start System.
F You must switch off the engine.F If your vehicle has Smart Entry & Start System, unlock the vehicle.F Open the filler flap.
Refuelling
Additions of fuel must be of at least 8 litres to be registered by the fuel gauge.Opening the filler cap may result in an inrush of air. This vacuum is entirely normal and results from the sealing of the fuel system.
F Remove the filler cap by unscrewing it, then place it on the carrier located on the filler flap.F Introduce the nozzle and push it in fully (pushing on the metal non-return valve A).F Fill the tank. Do not continue past the third cut-off of the nozzle, as this may cause malfunctions.F Refit the filler cap turning it to the right.F Push the filler flap to close it (your vehicle must be unlocked).
F Take care to select the pump that delivers the correct fuel type for your vehicle's engine (reminder on a label on the inside of the filler flap).
Capacity of the tank: approximately 69 litres.
F If your vehicle has a conventional key, introduce the key into the filler cap, then turn it to the left.
