before starting the engine.

The exterior mirror on the front-passenger
side reduces the size of the image. Visible
objects are actually closer than they appear.
This means that you coul dm isjudge the dis-
tance from road users traveling behind, e.g.
when changing lane .T here is ar isk of an acci-
dent.
For this reason, alway sm ake sure of the
actua ld istance from the road users traveling
behind by glancing over you rs houlder. X

Electrolyte ma ye scape if the glas sinana ut o-
matic anti-glare mirror breaks .T he electrolyte
is harmfu la nd causes irritation. It must not
come into contact with your skin, eyes, res-
piratory organs or clothing or be swallowed.

When leaving the vehicle, alway st ake the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
The memory function can be used at any time,
e.g. even when the SmartKey is not in the igni-
tion lock.
Storing settings With the memory function, you can store up to
three differen ts ettings, e.g. for three different
people.
The following settings are stored as as ingle

Briefly press the M memory button and then
press preset position button 1 , 2 or 3 within
three seconds.
The settings are stored in the selected preset

mirrors are in the stored position.

Problem

start. You cannot hear
the starter motor. The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or
discharged. X

Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two minutes. X

The engine is not running
smoothly and is misfir-
ing. There is am alfunction in the engine electronics or in am echanical
componen toft he engine management system.X
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X
Have the cause rectified immediately at aq ualified specialist work-
shop.
The coolant temperature
gauge shows av alue
above 248 ‡( 120 †).
The coolant warning
lamp may also be on and
aw arning tone may
sound. The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently. X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down. X

as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tb utton (all vehicles
except Mercedes-AMG vehicles) Use the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program
selected the following vehicle characteristics

the drive (engine and transmission manage-

the suspension (vehicles with damping sys-

the climate control:
Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program C is
activated. For further information about starting

Press DYNAMIC SELECT button C as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
program is selected.
The selected drive program appears in the
multifunction display .A fter five seconds the
display goes out and the status icon of the
selected drive program appears.128

Manual gear shifting
General notes You can change gear yourself using the steering
wheel paddle shifters. The transmission must be
in position [ to do this.
Depending on which steering wheel paddle
shifter is pulled, the automatic transmission
immediately shifts into the next gear down or
up, if permitted. Mercedes-AMG vehicles: to use manual shift-
ing, you have two options: R
temporary setting R
permanent setting
If you activate manual gearshifting, the multi-
function display will show the current gear
instead of transmission position [ .
If manual gearshifting is deactivated, the gears
will be selected automatically.
Temporar ys etting X
To activate: shift the DIRECT SELECT lever to
position [ . X
Pull steering wheel paddle shifter C or D .
Temporary setting will be active for ac ertain
amount of time. Under certain conditions the
minimum amount of time is extended, e.g. in the
case of lateral acceleration, during an overrun
phase or when driving on steep terrain. X
To deactivate: pull steering wheel paddle
shifter D and hold it in place.

Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the
transmission position.

Shifting gears
! Mercedes-AMG vehicles: the automatic
transmission does not shift up automatically
even when the engine limiting speed for the
current gear is reached. When the engine lim-
iting speed is reached, the fuel supply is cut to
prevent the engine from overrevving. Always
make sure that the engine speed does not
reach the red area of the tachometer. There is
otherwise ar isk of engine damage.

To shift up: pull steering wheel paddle
shifter D .
The automatic transmission shifts up to the
next gear. All vehicles (except Mercedes-AMG vehi-
cles): if the maximum engine speed on the
currently engaged gear is reached and you
continue to accelerate, the automatic trans-
mission automatically shifts up in order to
prevent engine damage. X
To shift down: pull steering wheel paddle
shifter C .
The automatic transmission shifts down to
the next gear.
Automatic down shifting occurs when coast-
ing.
If the engine exceeds the maximum engine
speed when shifting down, the automatic
transmission protect sa gainst engine damage
by not shifting down.
Shift recommendation
The gearshift recommendations assist you in
adopting an economical driving style. The rec-
ommended gear is shown in the multifunction
display. X
Shift to recommended gear D according to
gearshift recommendation C when shown in
the multifunction display.
Upshifting (Mercedes-AMG vehicles)
! In manual mode, the automatic transmis-
sion does not shift up automatically even
when the engine limiting speed for the current
gear is reached. When the engine limiting
speed is reached, the fuel supply is cut to
prevent the engine from overrevving. Always
make sure that the engine speed does not
reach the red area of the tachometer. There is
otherwise ar isk of engine damage.Automatic transmission 137

For maximum acceleration, depress the

The automatic transmission shifts to al ower

the steering wheel paddl es hifters.
If yo ua pply ful lt hrottle ,t he automatic trans-
missio ns hifts up to the next gea rw he nt he
maximum engine speed is reached .T hi sp re-
vents the engine from overrevving.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: it is only possible to
use kickdown in temporary manual drive pro-
gram M .W he nm anual drive program M is per-
manently activated, kickdown is not possible.
