Do not place any of the devices men‐
tioned abo veor similar devices on the
front passenger seat. #

If yo ure mo vea seat cushion, automatic child
seat recognition on the front passenger seat
will no longer function.
Therefore, the front passenger front airbag
will deploy during an accident even if a spe‐
cial rear wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem is
fi tted. #
Neverre mo vea seat cushion. The sensor sy
stem forth e automatic child seat
re cognition on the front passenger seat de tects
whe ther a special Mercedes-Benz child restra int
sy stem with transponders forth e automatic
ch ild seat recognition has been fitted. The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG ON and PASSENGER AIR
BA G OFF indicator lamps light up simul taneously
fo r appro ximately six seconds when the ignition
is switched on. The sy stem car ries out a self-
te st. If
th e front passenger front airbag is disabled by
th e automatic child seat recognition, thefo llow‐
ing remain enabled on the front passenger side:
R the side impact airbag
R the window airbag
R the seat belt tensioner &

If yo u secure a child in a child restra int sys‐
te m on the front passenger seat and the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is lit,

Inthis case, alw ays ensure that the
front passenger front airbag is disabled.

lamp must be lit.

If th ePA SSENGER AIRB AGOFF indicator
lamp is lit, the front passenger airbag is disa‐
bled. It will not be deplo yed in theeve nt of
an accident and cannot pe rform its intended
pr otective function.
A person in the front passenger seat could
th en, forex ample, come into con tact wi th
th eve hicle's interior, especially if the person
is sitting too close tothe dashboard. #
Inthis case the front passenger seat
may not be used. #
Only tr avel with a child who is sitting in
a re ar wa rd-facing or forw ard-facing
ch ild restra int sy stem on the front
passenger seat. #

re stra int sy stem on the front passenger seat
and you position the front passenger seat too
close tothe cockpit, in theeve nt of an acci‐
dent, thech ild could:

cle's interior if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp is lit, forex ample.
R bestru ck bythe airbag if thePA SSENGER
AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is lit. #
Alw ays mo vethe front passenger seat
as far back as possible. Alw ays make
sure that the shoulder belt stra p is cor‐
re ctly routed from the belt loop on the
ve hicle tothe shoulder belt guide on
th ech ild restra int sy stem. The shoulder belt
stra p must be routed forw ards and
down wards from the belt loop. #
Alw ays obser vethe information on suit‐

PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF

The ignition is switched on:
R The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp
lights up brief lyifth e sensor sy stem forthe
automatic child seat recognition on the front
passenger seat de tects a special Mercedes-
Benz child restra int sy stem with transpond‐
ers.
R The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp
lights up for 60 seconds if an occupant is
de tected on the front passenger seat. The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
does not light up.
If th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is
off, on lythePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp sho wsthest atus of the front passenger
front airbag. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indi‐
cator lamp may be lit continuously or be off.

seat belt on the front passenger seat
When fitting a belt-secu redch ild restra int sys‐
te m on the front passenger seat, alw ays obser ve
th efo llowing:
O Obser
vethech ild restra int sy stem manufac‐
turer's ins tallation and operating instruc‐
tions.
O Fo
r a child restra int sy stem in the "Univer‐
sal" or "Semi-Universal" categor y,make
sure that the sy stem has been appr oved for
th eve hicle seat.
Obser vethe no tes under "Suitability of
seats for attaching belt-secu redch ild
re stra int sy stems" (/ page54).
O The backrest of
thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of the front
passenger seat.
O Fo
r cer tain child restra int sy stems in weight
group II or III, there may be restrictions in
th e maximum size setting, e.g. due topossi‐
ble con tact wi th thero of. O
The
child restra int sy stem must not be put
under stra in between thero of and the seat
cushion and/or be fitted facing the wrong
direction. Adjust the seat backrest inclina‐
tion accordingly.
O The
child restra int sy stem must not be put
under stra in by the head restra ints. Adjust
th e head restra ints according ly.
O Ne
ver place objects under or behind the
ch ild restra int sy stem, e.g. cushions. #
Set the front passenger seat as far back as
possible and mo vethe seat into the highest
position. #
Set the seat backrest toan almost vertical
position. #
Fitthech ild restra int sy stem.
The entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the sitting sur face of the
front passenger seat. #
Alw ays make sure that the shoulder belt
st ra p is cor rectly routed from the seat belt outlet of
theve hicle tothe shoulder belt
guide on thech ild restra int sy stem.
The shoulder belt stra p must be routed for‐
wa rds and down wards from the seat belt out‐
let. #
If necessar y,adjust the front passenger seat
