AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHECK
The automatic transmission does not havea transmission fluid dipstick.
The automatic transmission does notconsume fluid. However, the fluid levelshould be checked if the transmission is notworking properly, for example if thetransmission slips or shifts slowly or if younotice some sign of fluid leakage.
Note:Transmission fluid should be checkedby an authorized dealer. If required, fluidshould be added by an authorized dealer.
Do not use supplemental transmission fluidadditives, treatments or cleaning agents. Theuse of these materials may affecttransmission operation and result in damageto internal transmission components.
BRAKE FLUID CHECK
WARNINGS
Do not use any fluid other than therecommended brake fluid as this willreduce brake efficiency. Use of incorrect fluidcould result in the loss of vehicle control,serious personal injury or death.
Only use brake fluid from a sealedcontainer. Contamination with dirt,water, petroleum products or other materialsmay result in brake system damage or failure.Failure to adhere to this warning could resultin the loss of vehicle control, seriouspersonal injury or death.
Do not allow the fluid to touch yourskin or eyes. If this happens, rinse theaffected areas immediately with plenty ofwater and contact your physician.
A fluid level between the MAX andMIN lines is within the normaloperating range and there is no need to addfluid. A fluid level not in the normal operatingrange could compromise the performanceof the system. Have your vehicle checkedimmediately.
To avoid fluid contamination, the reservoircap must remain in place and fully tight,unless you are adding fluid.
Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications.See Capacities and Specifications (page344).
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING
If you operate your vehicle intemperatures below 41.0°F (5°C), usewasher fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increase therisk of injury or accident.
Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 344).

State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuelfilter that is integrated with the fuel tank.Regular maintenance or replacement is notneeded.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personal injury.Therefore, do not allow flames, sparks orlighted substances to come near the battery.When working near the battery, always shieldyour face and protect your eyes. Alwaysprovide correct ventilation.
WARNINGS
When lifting a plastic-cased battery,excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through the ventcaps, resulting in personal injury and damageto the vehicle or battery. Lift the battery witha battery carrier or with your hands onopposite corners.
Keep batteries out of reach of children.Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Avoidcontact with skin, eyes or clothing. Shieldyour eyes when working near the battery toprotect against possible splashing of acidsolution. In case of acid contact with skin oreyes, flush immediately with water for aminimum of 15 minutes and get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
Battery posts, terminals and relatedaccessories contain lead and leadcompounds. Wash hands after handling.
For vehicles with Auto-Start-Stop thebattery requirement is different. Youmust replace the battery with one of exactlythe same specification.
Your vehicle is fitted with a Motorcraftmaintenance-free battery which normallydoes not require additional water.
When a battery replacement is required, youmust use a recommended replacementbattery that matches the electricalrequirements of the vehicle.
Note:If your vehicle has a battery cover,after cleaning or replacing the battery, makesure you reinstall it.
Note:See an authorized dealer for batteryaccess, testing, or replacement.
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect battery performance and durability.This may also affect the performance ofother electrical systems in the vehicle.

5. Locate the vertical adjuster on eachheadlamp. Turn the adjuster eitherclockwise or counterclockwise in orderto aim the headlamp.
6.Close the hood and switch off the lamps.
Horizontal Aim Adjustment
Horizontal aim is not required for this vehicleand is non-adjustable.
REMOVING A HEADLAMP
To gain access to the headlamp securingbolts and to remove the headlamp assembly,you must first remove the front fascia andfront bumper assemblies. We recommendyou see an authorized dealer.
CHANGING A BULB
WARNINGS
Switch all of the lamps and the ignitionoff. Failure to follow this warning couldresult in serious personal injury.
Bulbs can become hot. Let the bulbcool down before removing it. Failureto do so could result in personal injury.
Install in the reverse order unless otherwisestated.
High Intensity Discharge Headlamp (If
Equipped)
These lamps operate at a high voltage. Seean authorized dealer if they fail.
Front Direction Indicator
1. Remove the headlamp. See Removinga Headlamp (page 300).
2. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwiseand remove it.
3.Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out.
LED Lamps
LED lamps are not serviceable items. See anauthorized dealer if they fail.
The following lamps are LED:
•Side direction indicators.
•Approach lamp.

CHANGING THE ENGINE AIR
FILTER
WARNING
To reduce the risk of vehicle damageand personal burn injuries, do not startyour engine with the air cleaner removedand do not remove it while the engine isrunning.
When changing the air filter element, useonly the air filter element listed in theMotorcraft Parts table. See Motorcraft Parts(page 346).
When servicing the air cleaner on vehicleswith a turbocharger, it is important that noforeign material enter the air inductionsystem. The engine and turbocharger aresusceptible to damage from even smallparticles.
Change the air filter element at the properinterval. See Scheduled Maintenance (page481).
Note: Failure to use the correct air filterelement may result in severe enginedamage. The customer warranty may bevoid for any damage to the engine if thecorrect air filter element is not used.
1. Loosen the four fasteners and removethe air cleaner assembly lid.
2.Remove the air filter element from the airfilter housing.
3. Wipe any dirt or debris from the aircleaner assembly to make sure no dirtgets in the engine and to make sure youhave a good seal.

Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decals fromthe inside of the heated rear window. Thevehicle warranty does not cover damagecaused to the heated rear window grid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR
WARNINGS
Do not use cleaning solvents, bleachor dye on the vehicle's seatbelts, asthese actions may weaken the belt webbing.
On vehicles equipped withseat-mounted airbags, do not usechemical solvents or strong detergents. Suchproducts could contaminate the side airbagsystem and affect performance of the sideairbag in a crash.
Note:Follow the same procedure forcleaning leather seats when cleaning leatherinterior. See Cleaning Leather Seats (page311).
Note:Do not use household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners, which can stainand discolor the fabric and affect the flameretardant abilities of the seat materials.
For fabric, carpets, cloth seats, safety beltsand seats equipped with side airbags:
•Remove dust and loose dirt with avacuum cleaner.
•Remove light stains and soil withMotorcraft® Professional Strength Carpet& Upholstery Cleaner.
For grease or tar stains:
•Spot clean the area with Motorcraft® Spotand Stain Remover. In Canada, useMotorcraft® Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
•If a ring forms on the fabric after spotcleaning, clean the entire areaimmediately, but do not oversaturate orthe ring will set.
Cleaning Black Label or PresidentialInterior (If Equipped)
Note:Alcantara microfiber cloth fabric ismade of polyester microfiber withmicro-porous polyurethane. Usingcommercially available fabric cleaners cancause permanent damage.
Note:Do not use commercially availableleather and vinyl cleaning products onAlcantara microfiber cloth fabric.
Note:Lincoln Black Label or Presidentialvehicles may have Alcantara microfiber clothfabric on the seats, headliner, floor mats anddoor panels.
Depending on the type of stain, use water,lemon juice or pure ethyl alcohol whencleaning. For cleaning Alcantara microfibercloth, refer to the following chart:

CLEANING THE INSTRUMENT
PANEL AND INSTRUMENT
CLUSTER LENS
WARNING
Do not use chemical solvents or strongdetergents when cleaning the steeringwheel or instrument panel to avoidcontamination of the airbag system.
Note:Follow the same procedure ascleaning leather seats for cleaning leatherinstrument panels and leather interior trimsurfaces. See Cleaning Leather Seats (page311).
Clean the instrument panel and cluster lenswith a clean, damp and soft cloth, then usea clean, dry and soft cloth to dry these areas.
•Avoid cleaners or polishes that increasethe gloss of the upper portion of theinstrument panel. The dull finish in thisarea helps protect you from undesirablewindshield reflection.
•Do not use any household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners as these maydamage the finish of the instrumentpanel, interior trim and cluster lens.
•Wash or wipe your hands clean if youhave been in contact with certainproducts such as insect repellent andsuntan lotion to avoid possible damageto the interior painted surfaces.
•Do not allow air fresheners and handsanitizers to spill onto interior surfaces.If a spill occurs, wipe off immediately.Your warranty may not cover thesedamages.
If a staining liquid like coffee or juice hasbeen spilled on the instrument panel or oninterior trim surfaces:
1.Wipe up spilled liquid using a clean, softcloth as quickly as possible.
2. Use Motorcraft Premium Leather andVinyl Cleaner or a commercially availableleather cleaning product for automotiveinteriors. Test any cleaner or stainremover on an inconspicuous area.
3. Alternatively, wipe the surface with aclean, soft cloth and a mild soap andwater solution. Dry the area with a clean,soft cloth.
4.If necessary, apply more soap and watersolution or cleaning product to a clean,soft cloth and press it onto the soiledarea. Allow this to set at roomtemperature for 30 minutes.
5. Remove the soaked cloth, then with aclean, damp cloth, use a rubbing motionfor 60 seconds on the soiled area.
6. Dry the area with a clean, soft cloth.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The recommended tire inflation pressuresare found on the Tire Label which is locatedon the B-pillar or the edge of the driver door.This information can also be found on theSafety Compliance Certification Label, affixedto either the door hinge pillar, door-latchpost, or the door edge that meets thedoor-latch post; next to the driver’s seatingposition.
We strongly recommend maintaining thesetire pressures at all times. Failure to followthe tire pressure recommendations cancause uneven treadwear patterns, reducedfuel economy, and adversely affect the wayyour vehicle handles.
Note:Check and set the tire pressure at theambient temperature in which you areintending to drive your vehicle and when thetires are cold.
Note:Check your tire pressures at least onceper month.
If your vehicle has a spare tire, set thepressure to the highest value given for yourvehicle and tire size combination.
Use only approved wheels and tire sizes,using other sizes could damage your vehicle.
If you change the diameter of the factoryinstalled tires, the speedometer may notdisplay the correct speed. Take your vehicleto an authorized dealer and have the enginemanagement system reprogrammed.
If you intend to change the size of the factoryinstalled tires, check the suitability with anauthorized dealer.

Notice to utility vehicle and truckowners
WARNINGS
Vehicles with a higher center of gravity(utility and four-wheel drive vehicles)handle differently than vehicles with a lowercenter of gravity (passenger cars). Avoidsharp turns, excessive speed and abruptsteering in these vehicles. Failure to drivecautiously increases the risk of losing controlof your vehicle, vehicle rollover, personalinjury and death.
In a rollover crash, an unbelted personis significantly more likely to die thana person wearing a seatbelt.

Wheels and Tires

Utility vehicles and trucks handle differentlythan passenger cars in the various drivingconditions that are encountered on streets,highways and off-road. Utility vehicles andtrucks are not designed for cornering atspeeds as high as passenger cars any morethan low-slung sports cars are designed toperform satisfactorily under off-roadconditions.
Study your owner's manual and anysupplements for specific information aboutequipment features, instructions for safedriving and additional precautions to reducethe risk of an accident or serious injury.
All-wheel drive system (if equipped)
WARNING
Do not become overconfident in theability of four-wheel drive vehicles.Although a four-wheel drive vehicle mayaccelerate better than a two-wheel drivevehicle in low traction situations, it won't stopany faster than two-wheel drive vehicles.Always drive at a safe speed.
A vehicle equipped with all-wheel drive hasthe ability to use all four wheels to poweritself. This increases traction which mayenable you to safely drive over terrain androad conditions that a conventionaltwo-wheel drive vehicle cannot.
For all-wheel-drive vehicles, a spare tire ofa different size other than the tire providedshould never be used. A dissimilar spare tiresize; other than the spare tire provided ormajor dissimilar tire sized between the frontand rear axles could cause theall-wheel-drive system to stop functioningand default to front-wheel drive.
