Situations in which the system may not operate properly ●
In some situations such as the following, a vehicle may not be detected by the radar
sensor and camera sensor, preventing the system from operating properly:
• If an oncoming vehicle is approaching your vehicle
• If a vehicle ahead is a motorcycle or bicycle
• When approaching the side or front of a vehicle
• If a preceding vehicle has a small rear end, such as an unloaded truck
• If a vehicle ahead is carrying a load which protrudes past its rear bumper
• If a vehicle ahead is irregularly shap ed, such as a tractor or side car
• If the sun or other light is shin ing directly on a vehicle ahead
• If a vehicle cuts in front of your ve hicle or emerges from beside a vehicle
• If a vehicle ahead makes an abrupt maneuver (such as sudden swerving, accelera-
tion or deceleration)
• When suddenly cutting behind a preceding vehicle
• When driving in inclement we ather such as heavy rain, fog, snow or a sandstorm
• When the vehicle is hit by water, sn ow, dust, etc. from a vehicle ahead
• When driving through steam or smoke
• When driving in a place where the surrounding brightness changes suddenly, such
as at the entrance or exit of a tunnel
• When a very bright light, such as the sun or the headlights of on coming traffic, shines
directly into the camera sensor
• When the surrounding area is dim, such as at dawn or dusk, or while at night or in a
tunnel• If a preceding vehicle has a low rear end,
such as a low bed trailer
• If a vehicle ahead has extremely high
ground clearance
• When a vehicle ahead is not directly in front
of your vehicle

When water or snow thrown up by the surrounding vehicles hinders the detecting of
the sensor

Conditions under which the ve hicle-to-vehicle distance co ntrol mode may not function
correctly
In the case of the following conditions, o perate the brake pedal (or accelerator pedal,
depending on the situ ation) as necessary.
As the sensor may not be able to correctly detect vehicles ahead, the system may not
operate properly.

When the vehicle ahead of you decelerates suddenly ●
When your vehicle is pointing upwards
(caused by a heavy load in the luggage com-
partment, etc.) ●
Preceding vehicle has an extremely high
ground clearance
●
When the road curves or when the lanes are
narrow
●
When steering wheel operation or your posi-
tion in the lane is unstable

Re-enabling the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system
To re-enable the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system when it is disabled due to operation
of the Intelligent Clearance Sonar function, either enable the system again ( → P. 345), or
turn the power switch off an d then back to ON mode.
Additionally, if the object becomes no longer in the traveling directio n of the vehicle or if
the traveling direction of the vehicle change s (such as changing from moving forward to
backing up, or from backing up to moving fo rward), the system will be re-enabled auto-
matically. ■
Objects that the Intelligent Cleara nce Sonar function may not detect
The sensors may not be able to detect certain objects, such as the following. ●
Cotton cloth, snow, and other materials that are poor reflectors of ultrasonic waves.
(People may also not be detected depending on the type of clothing they are wearing.) ●
Objects which are not perpendicular to the ground, are not perpendicular to the travel-
ing direction of the vehicle, are uneven or are waving. ●
Low objects ●
Thin objects such as wires, fences, ropes and signposts ●
Objects that are extremely close to the bumper ■
Intuitive parking assist buzzer
Regardless of whether the in tuitive parking assist system is enabled or not ( → P. 332), if
the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system is enabled ( → P. 345), the front or rear sensors
detect an object and brake control is performed, the intuitive parking assist buzzer will
sound to notify the driver of the approximate distance to the object.

To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing using a wheel-lift type truck●
Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the power switch is off. The steering lock
mechanism is not strong enough to hold the front wheels straight. ●
When raising the vehicle, en sure adequate ground cleara nce for towing at the oppo-
site end of the raised vehicle. Without ad equate clearance, the vehicle could be dam-
aged while being towed. ■
To prevent damage to the vehicle wh en towing with a sling-type truck
Do not tow with a sling-type truck, either from the front or rear. ■
To prevent damage to the ve hicle during emergency towing
Do not secure cables or chains to the suspension components. ■
Recreational towing (behind motor home, etc)
Never dinghy tow your vehicle to prevent caus-
ing serious damage to the Hybrid AWD system
and transmission. ( → P. 238)
