Shift to P (for smart key system
and automatic transaxle)
• This warning message illuminates ifyou try to turn off the engine with‐
out the shift lever in P (Park) position.
• At this time, the Engine Start/Stop Button turns to the ACC position (If
you press the Engine Start/Stop But‐
ton once more, it will turn to the ON position).
Low Key Battery (for smart key
system)
• This warning message illuminates if the battery of the smart key is dis‐
charged when the Engine Start/Stop Button changes to the OFF position.
Press START button while turning
wheel (for smart key system)
• This warning message illuminates if
the steering wheel does not unlock
normally when the Engine Start/Stop Button is pressed.
• It means that you should press the Engine Start/Stop Button while turn‐
ing the steering wheel right and left.
Steering wheel unlocked (for smart
key system)
• This warning message illuminates if the steering wheel does not lockwhen the Engine Start/Stop Button
changes to the OFF position.
Check Steering Wheel Lock System
(for smart key system)
• This warning message illuminates if the steering wheel does not lock nor‐
mally when the Engine Start/Stop Button changes to the OFF position.
Press brake pedal to start engine
(for smart key system and
automatic transaxle)
• This warning message illuminates if the Engine Start/Stop Button
changes to the ACC position twice by pressing the button repeatedly with‐
out depressing the brake pedal.
• It means that you should depress the brake pedal to start the engine.
Press clutch pedal to start engine
(for smart key system and manual
transaxle)
• This warning message illuminates if the Engine Start/Stop Button
changes to the ACC position twice by
pressing the button repeatedly with‐ out depressing the clutch pedal.
• It means that you should depress the clutch pedal to start the engine.
Key not in vehicle (for smart key
system)
• This warning message illuminates ifthe smart key is not in the vehicle
when you press the Engine Start/ Stop Button.
• It means that you should always have the smart key with you.
Key not detected (for smart key
system)
• This warning message illuminates if
the smart key is not detected when
you press the Engine Start/Stop But‐ ton.

•The anti-theft steering columnlock is not a substitute for theparking brake. Before leaving thedriver’s seat, always make surethe shift lever is engaged in 1stgear for the manual transaxle or P(Park) for the automatic transaxle,set the parking brake fully andshut the engine off. Unexpectedand sudden vehicle movementmay occur if these precautions arenot taken.
•Never reach for the ignitionswitch, or any other controlsthrough the steering wheel whilethe vehicle is in motion. The pres‐ence of your hand or arm in thisarea could cause a loss of vehiclecontrol, an accident and seriousbodily injury or death.
•Do not place any movable objectsaround the driver’s seat as theymay move while driving, interferewith the driver and lead to an acci‐dent.
Starting the engine
WARNING
•Always wear appropriate shoeswhen operating your vehicle. Un‐suitable shoes (high heels, skiboots,etc.) may interfere withyour ability to use the brake andaccelerator pedal, and the clutch(if equipped).
•Do not start the vehicle with theaccelerator pedal depressed. Thevehicle can move and lead to anaccident.
•Wait until the engine rpm is nor‐mal. The vehicle may suddenlymove if the brake pedal is releasedwhen the rpm is high.

If your vehicle is equipped with a kick
down mechanism in the accelerator

pedal, it prevents you from driving
at full throttle unintentionally by
making the driver require increased
effort to depress the accelerator
pedal. However, if you depress the
pedal more than approximately 80%,
the vehicle can be at full throttle and
the accelerator pedal will be easier
to depress. This is not a malfunction
but a normal condition.
Starting the gasoline engine
1. Make sure the parking brake is ap‐plied.
2.
Manual Transaxle - Depress the
clutch pedal fully and shift the
transaxle into Neutral. Keep the
clutch pedal and brake pedal de‐
pressed while turning the ignition
switch to the start position.
Automatic Transaxle - Place the
transaxle shift lever in P (Park). De‐ press the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine when
the shift lever is in the N (Neutral)position.

3. Turn the ignition switch to STARTand hold it there until the engine
starts (a maximum of 10 seconds),
then release the key.
It should be started without de‐pressing the accelerator pedal.
4. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle remains sta‐
tionary.
Start driving at moderate engine
speeds. (Steep accelerating and de‐ celerating should be avoided.)
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while you are inmotion, do not attempt to move theshift lever to the P (Park) position. Iftraffic and road conditions permit,you may put the shift lever in the N(Neutral) position while the vehicle isstill moving and turn the ignitionswitch to the START position in anattempt to restart the engine.
CAUTION
•Do not engage the starter formore than 10 seconds. If the en‐gine stalls or fails to start, wait 5to 10 seconds before re-engagingthe starter. Improper use of thestarter may damage it.
•Do not turn the ignition switch tothe START position with the en‐gine running. It may damage thestarter.
Starting the diesel engine
To start the diesel engine when the en‐
gine is cold, it has to be pre-heated be‐ fore starting the engine and then have
to be warmed up before starting to
drive. 1. Make sure the parking brake is ap‐ plied. 2.
Manual Transaxle -
Depress the
clutch pedal fully and shift the
transaxle into Neutral. Keep the
clutch pedal and brake pedal de‐ pressed while turning the ignition
switch to the start position.
Automatic Transaxle - Place the
transaxle shift lever in P(park). De‐
press the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine when
the shift lever is in the N(neutral) position.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON
position to pre-heat the engine.
Then the glow indicator light will il‐
luminate.

GINE START/STOP button while
turning the steering wheel right and
left to release the tension.
•If difficulty is experienced turning
the engine start/stop button to
the ACC position, turn the steering
wheel right and left to release the
tension while pressing the engine
start/stop button.
•When you turn off the engine, the
vehicle should be stopped.
CAUTION
You are able to turn off the engine(START/RUN) or vehicle power (ON),only when the vehicle is not in mo‐tion. In an emergency situation whilethe vehicle is in motion, you are ableto turn the engine off and to theACC position by pressing the enginestart/stop button for more than 2seconds or 3 times successivelywithin 3 seconds. If the vehicle is stillmoving, you can restart the engine

ACC (Accessory)
With manual transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button when the button is
in the OFF position without depressing the clutch pedal.
With automatic transaxle
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button
while it is in the OFF position without depressing the brake pedal.
The steering wheel unlocks and electri‐
cal accessories are operational.
If the ENGINE START/STOP button is in
the ACC position for more than 1 hour, the button is turned off automatically
to prevent battery discharge.

Press the engine start/stop button when the button is
in the ACC position without depressing the clutch pedal.

With automatic transaxle
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button
while it is in the ACC position without depressing the brake pedal.
The warning lights can be checked be‐
fore the engine is started. Do not leave
the ENGINE START/STOP button in the ON position for a long time. The bat‐
tery may discharge, because the engineis not running.
START/RUN
With manual transaxle
To start the engine, depress the clutch pedal and brake
pedal, then press the engine start/stop button with theshift lever in the N (Neutral) position.
With automatic transaxle
To start the engine, depress the brake
pedal and press the engine start/stop
button with the shift lever in the P (Park) or the N (Neutral) position. For
your safety, start the engine with the
shift lever in the P (Park) position.

NOTICE
If you press the ENGINE START/
STOP button without depressing the
clutch pedal for manual transaxle
vehicles or without depressing the
brake pedal for automatic transaxle
vehicles, the engine will not start
and the engine start/stop button
changes as follow:
OFF ➔ACC ➔ ON ➔ OFF or ACC
NOTICE
If you leave the ENGINE START/STOP
button in the ACC or ON position for
a long time, the battery will dis‐
charge.
WARNING
•Never press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle is inmotion. This would result in loss ofdirectional control and brakingfunction, which could cause an ac‐cident.
•The anti-theft steering columnlock is not a substitute for theparking brake. Before leaving thedriver's seat, always make surethe shift lever is engaged in P(Park), set the parking brake fullyand shut the engine off. Unexpec‐ted and sudden vehicle movementmay occur if these precautions arenot taken.

2. Make sure the parking brake is firmly applied. 3.
Manual Transaxle
- Depress the
clutch pedal fully and shift the
transaxle into Neutral. Keep the
clutch pedal and brake pedal de‐
pressed while starting the engine.
Automatic Transaxle - Place the
transaxle shift lever in P (Park). De‐ press the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine when
the shift lever is in the N (Neutral)position.
4. Press the engine start/stop button.
It should be started without de‐pressing the accelerator.
5. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle remains sta‐
tionary.
