Some fuel stations, particularly those inhigh altitude areas, offer fuels posted asregular unleaded gasoline with an octanerating below 87.
For best overall vehicle and engineperformance, premium fuel with an octanerating of 91 or higher is recommended. Theperformance gained by using premium fuelis most noticeable in hot weather as wellas other conditions, for example whentowing a trailer. See Towing (page 171).
Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contactan authorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
We recommend Top Tier detergentgasolines, where available to help minimizeengine deposits and maintain optimalvehicle and engine performance. Foradditional information, refer towww.toptiergas.com.
Note:Use of any fuel for which the vehiclewas not designed can impair the emissioncontrol system, cause loss of vehicleperformance, and cause damage to theengine which may not be covered by thevehicle Warranty.
Do not use:
•Diesel fuel.
•Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
•Fuel containing more than 15% ethanolor E85 fuel.
•Fuels containing methanol.
•Fuels containing metallic-basedadditives, including manganese-basedcompounds.
•Fuels containing the octane boosteradditive, methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
•Leaded fuel, using leaded fuel isprohibited by law.
The use of fuels with metallic compoundssuch as methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (commonly knownas MMT), which is a manganese-basedfuel additive, will impair engineperformance and affect the emissioncontrol system.
FUEL FILLER FUNNEL
LOCATION
The fuel filler funnel is under the luggagecompartment floor covering.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Running out of fuel can cause damage notcovered by the vehicle Warranty.
If your vehicle runs out of fuel:
•Add a minimum of 1.3 gal (5 L) of fuelto restart the engine.
•You may need to switch the ignitionfrom off to on several times afterrefueling to allow the fuel system topump the fuel from the tank to theengine. When restarting, cranking timetakes a few seconds longer thannormal.
Note:If your vehicle is on a steep slope,more fuel may be required.
Filling a Portable Fuel Container
WARNING
Flow of fuel through a fuel pumpnozzle can produce static electricity.This can cause a fire if you are fillingan ungrounded fuel container.

SelectShift™ AutomaticTransmission
This feature gives you the ability to changegears up or down as desired.
Downshifts are allowed unless the enginespeed after the shift exceeds themaximum allowable limit.
In order to prevent engine stalls,SelectShift automatically downshifts atlow engine speeds.
Note:Engine damage may occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.
SelectShift does not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit, unless the accelerator pedal is at fulltravel.
Take notice of the shift indicator lamp,which alerts you when to shift to make sureyou achieve the highest level of efficiencyand fuel economy.
If equipped with the toggle on thegearshift lever, press the + toggleswitch on the side of the gearshift leverto activate SelectShift.
If equipped with steering wheelpaddles, pull the + paddle on thesteering wheel to activate SelectShift.
•Pull the right paddle (+) to upshift.
•Pull the left paddle (–) to downshift.
SelectShift in drive (D):
•Provides temporary manual control ofthe gear selection when a moredemanding response is required (forexample, when towing or overtaking).This mode holds a selected gear for atemporary period of time dependenton driver input (for example, steeringwheel or accelerator pedal input).

Using the Rear View CameraSystem
The rear view camera system displayswhat is behind your vehicle when you placethe transmission in reverse (R).
The system uses three types of guides tohelp you see what is behind your vehicle:
•Active guidelines: Show the intendedpath of your vehicle when reversing.
•Fixed guidelines: Show the actual pathyour vehicle is moving in while reversingin a straight line. This can be helpfulwhen backing into a parking space oraligning your vehicle with anotherobject behind you.
•Centerline: Helps align the center ofyour vehicle with an object (forexample, a trailer).
Note:If the transmission is in reverse (R)and the luggage compartment is ajar, norear view camera features are displayed.
Note:If the image comes on while thetransmission is not in reverse (R), have thesystem checked as soon as possible.
Note:When towing, the camera only seeswhat is being towed behind your vehicle.This might not provide adequate coverageas it usually provides in normal operationand some objects might not be seen. Insome vehicles, the guidelines may disappearonce the trailer tow connector is engaged.
Note:The camera may not operatecorrectly under the following conditions:
•Nighttime or dark areas if one or bothreverse lamps are not operating.
•The camera's view is obstructed bymud, water or debris. Clean the lenswith a soft, lint-free cloth andnon-abrasive cleaner.
•The rear of your vehicle is hit ordamaged, causing the camera tobecome misaligned.
Access the rear view camera systemsettings through the information display.See General Information (page 85).
After changing a system setting, thedisplay screen shows a preview of theselected features.

Blocked Sensors
The sensors are behind the rear bumperon both sides of your vehicle.
Note:Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt.
Note:Do not cover the sensors with bumperstickers, repair compound or other objects.
Note:Blocked sensors could affect systemperformance.
If the sensors are blocked, a message mayappear in the information display. SeeInformation Messages (page 88). Thealert indicators remain illuminated but thesystem does not alert you.
System Errors
If the system detects a fault, a warninglamp illuminates and a message displays.See Information Messages (page 88).
Switching the System Off and On
You can switch the system off using theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 85). When you switchthe system off, a warning lamp illuminatesand a message displays. When you switchthe system on or off, the alert indicatorsflash twice.
Note:The system remembers the lastsetting when you start your vehicle.
Note:The system may not correctly operatewhen towing a trailer. For vehicles with atrailer tow module and tow bar approvedby us, the system turns off when you attacha trailer. CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT (If
Equipped)
WARNINGS
Do not use the cross traffic alertsystem as a replacement for usingthe interior and exterior mirrors orlooking over your shoulder before reversingout of a parking space. The cross trafficalert system is not a replacement forcareful driving.
The system may not operateproperly during severe weatherconditions, for example snow, ice,heavy rain and spray. Always drive withdue care and attention. Failure to take caremay result in a crash.
The system is designed to alert you ofvehicles approaching from the sides whenyou shift into reverse (R).
Using the Cross Traffic AlertSystem
The system is designed to detect vehiclesthat approach with a speed up to 37 mph(60 km/h). Coverage decreases when thesensors are partially, mostly or fullyobstructed. Slowly reversing helps increasethe coverage area and effectiveness.

STEERING
Electric Power Steering
WARNINGS
The electric power steering systemhas diagnostic checks thatcontinuously monitor the system. Ifa fault is detected, a message displays inthe information display. Stop your vehicleas soon as it is safe to do so. Switch theignition off. After at least 10 seconds,switch the ignition on and watch theinformation display for a steering systemwarning message. If a steering systemwarning message returns, have the systemchecked as soon as possible.
If the system detects an error, youmay not feel a difference in thesteering, however a serious conditionmay exist. Have your vehicle checked assoon as possible, failure to do so mayresult in loss of steering control.
Note:Your vehicle is equipped with anelectric power-assisted steering system.There is no fluid reservoir to check or fill.
The electric power steering systemoperates by an electric motor, whichreduces the effort on the driver's steeringwheel.
The system operates progressively andduring maneuvers, the system leaves theeffort lighter. As the vehicle speedincreases, it reduces its action to improvethe control of the vehicle.
If your vehicle loses electrical power whileyou are driving (or if the ignition is turnedoff), you can steer the vehicle manually,but it takes more effort. Extremecontinuous steering may increase the effortit takes for you to steer. This occurs toprevent internal overheating andpermanent damage to your steeringsystem. If this should occur, you will notlose the ability to steer the vehiclemanually nor will it cause permanentdamage. Typical steering and drivingmaneuvers will allow the system to cooland steering assist will return to normal.
Steering Tips
Avoid sudden movements with the steeringwheel. The force required to change thevehicle direction is lower, compared to avehicle with mechanical steering.
If the steering wanders or pulls, check for:
•An improperly inflated tire
•Uneven tire wear
•Loose or worn suspension components
•Loose or worn steering components
•Improper vehicle alignment
A high crown in the road or high crosswindsmay also make the steering seem towander or pull.

Payload
Payload is the combined weightof cargo and passengers that yourvehicle is carrying. The maximumpayload for your vehicle appearson the Tire and Loading label. Thelabel is either on the B-pillar or theedge of the driver door. Vehiclesexported outside the US andCanada may not have a tire andloading label. Look for “Thecombined weight of occupantsand cargo should never exceedXXX kg OR XXX lb” for maximumpayload. The payload listed on theTire and Loading Information labelis the maximum payload for yourvehicle as built by the assemblyplant. If you install any additionalequipment on your vehicle, youmust determine the new payload.Subtract the weight of theequipment from the payload listedon the Tire and Loading label.When towing, trailer tongueweight or king pin weight is alsopart of payload.
WARNING
The appropriate loadingcapacity of your vehicle canbe limited either by volumecapacity (how much space isavailable) or by payload capacity(how much weight the vehicleshould carry). Once you havereached the maximum payload ofyour vehicle, do not add morecargo, even if there is spaceavailable. Overloading orimproperly loading your vehiclecan contribute to loss of vehiclecontrol and vehicle rollover.
GAWR (Gross Axle WeightRating)
GAWR is the maximum allowableweight that a single axle (front orrear) can carry. These numbersare on the Safety ComplianceCertification label. The label islocated on the door hinge pillar,door-latch post, or the door edgethat meets the door-latch post,next to the driver seating position.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle WeightRating)
GVWR is the maximum allowableweight of the fully loaded vehicle.This includes all options,equipment, passengers and cargo.It appears on the SafetyCompliance Certification label.The label is located on the doorhinge pillar, door-latch post, or thedoor edge that meets thedoor-latch post, next to the driverseating position.
The gross vehicle weight mustnever exceed the Gross VehicleWeight Rating.
