Airbag syste m
-Repairs to the front passenger seat must be
performed by qua lified and properly trained
workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or driver
seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upho lstery from the front
passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from the
seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets or
put them on the seat . The capacitive pas­
senger detection mat in the front passenger
seat will not function properly if it is punc­
tured.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry ob­
jects on the front passenger seat. Such ob­
jects can influence the capac itance regis­
tered by the capac itive passenger detection
system, so that incorrect information is p ro­
vided to the airbag control unit.
- Never store items under the front passenger
seat. Parts of the Advanced Airbag System
under the passenger sea t could be dam­
aged, preventing them and the airbag sys­
tem from working properly.
- Never place seat covers o r rep lacemen t up­
holstery that have not been spec ifically ap­
proved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced Air­
bag System from recogn izing child re ­
straints or occupants on the front passenge r
seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat
backrest from dep loying properly.
- If a seat heater has been retrofitted or oth­
erwise added to the front passenge r seat,
never install any ch ild restraint system on
this seat.
- Never use cush ions, pillows, blankets, or
similar items on the front passenger seat.
The add it iona l layers prevent the capacitive
passenger detection system from accurate ly
measuring the capac itance of the ch ild safe­
ty seat and/or the pe rson on the seat and
th us keep the Advanced Airbag System from
wor king p roperly.
- Never place o r use any electrical device
(s uch as a laptop, CD player, elect ronic
games dev ice, power inverter or seat heater

for child seats) on the front passenger seat
if the device is connected to the 12-volt
socket or the cigarette lighter socket. Such
dev ices can influence the capac itance regis­
tered by the capacitive passenger detection
system, so that incorrect informat ion is pro­
vided to the airbag cont rol unit.
- If you must use a child restra int on the fron t
passenger seat and the child restraint man­
ufacturer's instructions requ ire the use of a
towel, foam c ushion or someth ing else to
proper ly posit ion the child res tra int, ma ke
certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
~ ; light comes on and stays on whenever
the child restraint is installed on the front
passenger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light
does not come on and stay on, have the air­ bag system inspected by your Audi dealer.
A WARNING
If the front passenger seat gets wet, dry it im­
mediately .
-If liquid soaks into the front passenger seat,
this can keep the airbag system from work­
ing properly and may, for instance, deacti­
vate the passenger frontal airbag.
If this
happens, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~'
light will come on and s tay on together w ith
t he air bag indica to r li gh t
El in the instru­
ment cluster .
- If liqu id is pooled on the sea t, but has not
soaked in, th is may also keep the airbag sys­
tem from wor king p roper ly and cause the
passenger fronta l airbag to be enabled
(turned on), even though there is a properly
installed child restraint system on the seat.
Wet towels or other wet things on the seat
cushion can have the same effect . If the
front passenger fronta l airbag is turned on,
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~, light will
turn off.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the side
airbags supp lement the protection offered by the

met, be sure to check the light regularly to make
certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF "1;
light stays on continuously whenever the ignition
is on. If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF "1; light
does not appear on and does not stay on all the
time, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and
- reactivate the system by turning the ign ition
off for more than 4 seconds and then turning it
on again;
- remove and reinstall the child restraint. Make
sure that the child restraint is properly instal­ led and that the safety belt for the front pas­
senger seat has been correctly routed through
the child restraint as descr ibed in the child re­
straint manufacturer's i nstr uctions;
- make sure that the convertible locking retrac­
tor on the safety be lt for the front passenger
seat has bee n activated and that the safety belt
has been pulled tight.
- make sure that no electrical device (such as a
laptop, CD player, elect ronic games dev ice,
power inverter or seat heater for child seats) is
placed or used on the front passenger seat if
the device is connected to the 12 ·vo lt socket or
the cigarette lighter socket;
- make sure that no seat heater has been retro­
fitted or otherwise added to the front passen­
ger seat;
- make sure that nothing can interfere with the
safety belt buckles and that they are not ob­
structed;
- make sure that there are no wet objects (such
as a wet towel) and no water or other liquids on
the front passenger seat cush ion.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light still
does not come on ...
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF "1; light still
does not come on and does not stay on continu­
ously (when the ignition is sw itched on),
- take the child restraint off the front passenger
seat and have the airbag system inspected by
your Audi dealer immed iate ly.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light
should NOT come on ...
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light should
NOT come on when the ign ition is on and an
Airbag system
adult is sitting in a proper seating position on the
front passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG
OFF ~; light comes on and stays on whi le
driv ing, under these c ircumstances, make sure
that:
- the adult on the front passenger seat is proper ­
ly seated on the center of the seat cushion w ith
his or her back up against the backrest and the
backrest is not reclined,
- the adult is not taking weight off the seat by holding on to the passenger assist handle
above the front passenger door or support ing
their weight on the armrest,
- the safety belt is being properly worn and that
there is not a lot of slack in the safety belt web­
b ing,
- there are no aftermarket seat covers or cush­
ions or other things (such as blankets) on the
front passenger seat that might cause the ca­
pacitive passenge r detection system to miscal­
culate e lectr ica l capacitance.
Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
-
-If the status of the Advanced Airbag System
has changed while the vehicle is moving, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF "1; ON@ light
blinks for about 5 seconds to catch the driv­
er 's attention. If this happens, always stop
as soon as it is safe to do so and check the
steps described above .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF "1; light
does not go off when an adult who is not
very small is sitting on the front passenger
seat after taking the steps described above,
have the airbag system inspected by your
author ized Audi dealer before transporting
anyone on the front passenger seat.
A WARNING
-
An air bag system that is not functioning prop­
erly cannot provide supplemental protection
in a fronta l crash.
- If the airbag indicator light <=> page 14
comes when the vehicle is being used, have

- If except ional circumstances require the use
of a forward-facing child res traint on the
front passenger's seat, the child's safety
and well-being require the following special
precautions to be taken:
- Always make sure that the forward-facing seat has been designed and cert ified by its
manufacture r fo r u se on a front passenger
seat with a front and s ide a irb ag.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided with the child seat
or i nfan t ca rrier.
- Never p ut the fo rward-facing child re­
s tra int up against o r very near the instru­
men t panel.
- Always move the front passenger seat to
the highest posit ion in the up and down
ad justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible, before installing
the forward-fac ing ch ild restraint.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt up­
pe r anchorage is behind the child restra int
and not next to o r in front of the child re­
stra int so that the safety belt will be prop­
erly positioned.
- Always make sure that nothing prevents
the front passenger's seat from be ing
moved to the rearmost posit ion in its fore
and aft adjustment range .
- Never place objects on the seat (such as a
laptop, CD p laye r, electronic games de­
vice, powe r inverter or seat heater for
child se ats). These m ay influence the ele c-

trical capacitance measu red by the capac i­
tive passenger detection system and can also fly around in an acc ident and cause
serious personal injury .
- Never place or use any electrical device
(such as a laptop, CD player, electronic

seat if the device is connected to the 12-
vo lt socke t or the cigarette lighter so cket.
- If a seat heate r has been retrofitted or

- Always buck le the child seat firmly in
place even if a child is not s itting in it . A
loose child seat can fly aro und during a
sudden stop or in a collision.

Infant seats
Babies and infants up to about one year old and
20 lbs or
9 kg need special rearward-facing child
restraints that support the back, neck and head
in a crash .

.,. Push the ch ild safety seat down with your full
weight to get the safety belt really tight so that
the seat cannot move forward and sideways
more than 1 in (2.S cm).
Infants up to about one yea r (20 lbs or 9 kg) are
best protected in special infant carr iers and child
safety seats designed for their age group. Many
experts be lieve that infants and small ch ildren
should ride only in special restra ints in wh ich the
child faces the back of the vehicle. These infant
seats support the baby's back, neck and head in a

Convertible child safety seats
Properly used convertible child safety seats con
help protect toddlers and children over age one
who weigh between 20 and 40 lbs (9 and 18 kg)
in a crash .

A toddler or child is usually too large for an in·
fant restraint if it is more than one year old and

Toddlers and children who are older than one

properly restrained in a child safety seat certified
for their size and weight and

Booster seats and safety belts
Properly used booster seats con help protect
children weighing between abou t 40 lbs and
80 lbs (18 kg and 36 kg) who are less than 4 ft
