special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-fa cing seat h as
been designed an d certif ied by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a pas ­
senger front and side airbag.
- Always care fully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided with the child safety
seat o r ca rr ier.
- Always move the front passenger seat to the highest posit ion in the up and down
ad justment range and move it back to the
rearmost posit ion in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible, before installing
the forward-fac ing ch ild restraint .
- Always make sure that the safety be lt up­
pe r anchorage is behind the child restra int
and not next to or in front of the child re-

- Always make sure that nothing p revents
the front passenger's seat from being moved to the rearmost position in its fore

er for child seats) on the front passenger
seat if the device is connec ted to the 12-

The airbag on the passenger side makes the front
seat a potentially dangerous place for a child to ride. The front seat is not the safest place for a
child in a forward-facing child seat. It is a very
dangerous place for an infant or a larger child in
a rearward-facing seat.
A WARNING
Not using a child safety seat, using the wrong
child safety seat or improperly installing a
child restraint increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death in a crash.
- Never install rear -facing child safety seats
or infant carriers on the front passenger
seat - even with an Advanced Airbag System.

Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking r etractor for child
re ­
straints will be deactivated automatically when
the bel t is wound all the way back in to the re­
tractor .
~ Press the red button on the safety belt b uckle.
Th@ belt tongue w ill pop out of the buckl e.
~ Gu ide the safety belt a ll the way back into its
stowed position .
Always let the safety belt retract complete ly into
its stowed position . The safety bel t can now be
used as an ordinary safety belt without the con­
vert ible lock ing retractor for child restra ints .
If the convert ible lock ing retractor should be ac ­
tiva ted inadve rtently, the safe ty belt must be un­
fastened and gu ided completely back into its
stowed position to deact ivate this feature .
If the
convertib le lock ing retractor is not deact ivated,
the safety belt w ill gradually become tighte r and
uncomfo rtable to wea r.
A WARNING
-
Improperly installe d child safety seats in­
crease the risk of serio us pe rsonal injury and
death in a collision .
- Never unfasten the safe ty belt to deactiva te
the convert ible locking retractor for child re­
straints while the vehicle is moving . You

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To p rovide a simp ler and mo re practicab le way to
attach the ch ild restraint on the vehicle seat,
Federal regulations require spec ia l lower ancho­
rages in vehicles and devices on new ch ild re­
straints to attach to the vehicle anchorages .
In the United States, the combination of the
tethe r ancho rages and the lower anchorages is
now generally called t he LATCH system for
" Lower Anchorages and Tethers for Children" . In
Canada, the terms
" top tet her " wi th "lower u ni­
versa l anchorages " (o r "lowe r universa l anchor­
age bars") a re used to des cribe the system .
In other co untries the term
"ISOF IX" is used to
desc ribe the lower anchorages .
Fo rward-facing chi ld restraints manufactured af­
ter September
1, 1999, are required by U.S . fed­
era l regulations to comply with new child head
movement performance req uir ements . These
new performance requ irements make a tether
necessary on most new ch ild sea ts.
Installing a ch ild restraint that requires a top
tether wi thout one can se riously impair the per­
fo rmance of the c hild rest raint and its ab ility to
pro tect the ch ild in a co ll ision. I nstalling a ch ild
r es trai nt th at r equi res a top te ther wi tho ut the
top tether may be a vio lation o f st ate law.

en ter the exhaust system , which c an cause over­
hea ting and damage to the cata lyti c conver ter .
A WARNING
The temperat ure o f the exhaust system is
high , both when driv ing and after stopping
the eng ine.

-Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they
have become hot . This cou ld resu lt in burns.
- Do not par k your veh icle over flammable
materials such as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the emissions con­
trol system could start a fire.

("GVWR").
The "GVWR" includes the weight
of the basic vehicle, all factory in­
stalled accessories, a full tank of
fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids
plus maximum load. The maxi­
mum load includes the number of
passengers that the vehicle is in­
tended to carry ("seating capaci­
ty") with an assumed weight of 150 lbs . (68 kg) for each passen­
ger at a designated seating posi ­
tion and the total weight of any luggage in the vehicle. If you tow
a trailer, the weight of the trailer
hitch and the tongue weight of
the loaded trailer must be includ­
ed as part of the vehicle load .
The
Gro ss Ax le W eight Rating
("GAWR") is the maximum load
that can be applied at each of the
vehicle's two axles .
T he fact that there is an upper
limit to your vehicle's Gross Vehi­
cle Weight Rating means that the
total weight of whatever is being
carried in the vehicle (including
the weight of a trailer hitch and
the tongue weight of the loaded
trailer) is limited . The more pas­
sengers in the vehicle or passen -

gers who are heavier than the
standard weights assumed mean
that less weight can be carried as luggage .
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and the Gross Axle Weight Rat ing
are listed on the safety compli­
ance sticker labe l located on the
driver's side B-pillar.

Overloading a vehicle can cause loss of vehicle control, a crash
or other accident, serious per­
sonal injury, and even death.
-Carrying more weight than your vehicle was designed to carry will prevent the vehicle
from handling properly and increase the risk of the loss of
vehicle control.
-The brakes on a vehicle that has been overloaded may not
be able to stop the vehicle
within a safe distance .
-Tires on a vehicle that has been overloaded can fail sud ­
denly, including a blowout and
sudden deflation, causing loss
of contro l and a crash.

Determining correct load
limit
Use the example below to calcu­
late the total weight of the pas­
sengers and luggage or other
things that you plan to transport
so that you can make sure that
your vehicle will not be overload­ ed.
Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit

will be transferred to your ve­ hicle. Consult this manual to
determine how this reduces
the available cargo and lug­
gage load capacity of your vehi­
cle.
