Airbag system
-the e lectronic control module and externa l side

The a irbag system is monitored electronically to
make certa in that it is functioning properly at all
times. Each time you turn on the ignition, the air­
bag system ind icator light will come on for a few
seconds (self diagnostics).
The s ide a irbag system supplements the safety
be lts and can help to reduce the risk of injury to
the driver's, front and rear* passenger's upper
torso on the side of the vehicle that is struck in a
side co llision . The airbag dep loys on ly in side im­
pacts and on ly when the vehicle acceleration reg ­
istered by the control unit is high enough. If this
rate is below the reference value programmed in­
to the control un it, the side airbags w ill not be
tr iggered, even though the car may be badly
damaged as a result of the collision. It is not pos­
sib le to define an ai rbag tr igger ing range that
w ill cover every possible angle of impact, s ince
t he circumstances will vary considerably between
one collision and another. Important factors in­
clude, for example, the nature (hard or soft) of
the impacting object, the angle of impact, vehicle
speed, etc.

Aside from their normal safety function, safety
be lts work to help keep the driver or front pas ­
senger in position in the event of a side collision
so that the side a irbags can provide protection.
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your
safety belt . Rather, it is part of the overa ll occu ­
pant restraint system in your vehicle. Always re­
member that the s ide airbag system can only
help to protect you if you are wearing your safety
belt and wearing it properly. This is another rea­
son why you should always wear you r safety
be lts, not just because the law requ ires you to do
soc>

It is important to remember that while the sup­
plemental s ide a irbag system is designed to re-

duce the likelihood of serious injuries, other inju­
ries, for example, swelling, bruising, friction
burns and m inor abras ions can also be assoc iated
with deployed side airbags. Remember too, side
airbags will dep loy only once and only in certa in
kinds of accidents -your safety belts are always
there to offer protection .
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack of
vehicle damage are not necessar ily an ind ication
of over-sens itive or fa iled airbag activat ion . In
some collis ions, both front and side airbags may
i nflate. Remember too, that air bags w ill dep loy
only once and only in certain kinds of collisions -
yo ur safety belts are always there to offer protec­
tion in those accidents in which airbags are not
supposed to deploy or when they have alr eady
deployed.
The side airbag system will not deploy:
-when the ignition is turned off
- in side co llisions whe n the accele ration meas-
ured by the sensor is too low
- in fro nt-end coll is ions
- in rear-end collisions
- in rollovers.
In some types of accidents t he front airbags, side
curtain airbags and side airbags may be triggered
together.

- Safety belts and the airbag system will only
provide protection when occupants are in
the proper seat ing position

comes when the vehicle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer . It is possible that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup­
posed to, or will not inflate when it should.

Airb ag syste m
by being pushed into you as the airbag in­
flates.
- Never p lace or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cupho lders, telephone
brackets, or even large, bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the seat backrests.
- Such objects and accessories can become
dangerous projectiles and cause injury
when the supplemental side airbag de­ ploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the de­ ployment space between them and the
airbags or allow children or other passen­
gers to travel in this position.
- Always use the built-in coat hooks* only for
lightweight clothing. Never leave any heavy
or sharp-edged objects in the pockets that
may interfere w ith side airbag deployment
and can cause personal injury in an accident.
- Always prevent the side airbags from being
damaged by heavy objects knocking against
or hitting the sides of the seatbacks.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once. If the airbag has been triggered, the
system must be replaced by an author ized
Audi dealership .
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to the
original seat covers or to the seam in the
area of the side a irbag mod ule m ust always
be repa ired immed iate ly by an authorized
Audi dealer .
-If children are seated imp roperly, their risk
of injury increases in the case of an acc ident

- Never attempt to modify any components of
the a irbag system in any way.
- In a side collision, side a irbags w il l not func­
t ion properly if sensors cannot correct ly
measure increasing air pressure ins ide the
doors when air escapes through larger, un­
closed openings in the door panel.
- Never drive with inter ior door tr im panels
removed .
- Never drive when parts have been re­
moved from the inside door panel and the
open ings they leave have not been proper­
ly closed.

- Never drive when loudspeakers in the
doors have been removed unless the
speaker holes have been properly closed.
- Always make certain that openings are
covered or filled if additional speakers or
other equipment is installed in the inside
door panels.
- Always have work on the doors done by an
authorized Aud i dea ler or qualified work­
shop.
Side curtain airbags
Description of side curtain airbags
The side curtain airbags can provide supplemen­
tal protection to properly restrained occupants.

The side curtain airbags contain features that
provide ejection mitigation to help prevent vehi­
cle occupants or parts of their bodies from being
completely or part ially ejected from the vehicle
i nterior i n certa in side impacts and veh icle roll­
overs .
The side curtain airbag system supplements the
safety belts and can help to reduce the risk of in­
jury for occupants' heads and upper torso in a
s ide collision . The side curtain airbag inflates in
s ide impacts and on ly when the veh icle accelera­
tion registered by the control unit is high enough. If this rate is be low the reference va lue
programmed into the contro l unit, the side cur ­
tain airbag will not be triggered, even though the car may be badly damaged as a result of the ..,.

collision. It is not possible to define an airbag
triggering range that will cover every possible an­
g le of impact, s ince the circumstances will vary
considerably between one collision and another.
Important factors include, for example, the na­
ture (hard or soft) of the impacting object, the

airbags to help reduce the risk of head and upper
torso injuries for occupants who are properly re­
strained.

When the system is triggered, the side curtain
airbag is filled with propellant gas and breaks
through a seam above the front and rear side
windows identified by the AIRBAG label. In order
to help provide this additional protect io n, the
s ide curtain a irbag must inf late w ithi n the blink
of a n eye at very high speed a nd with g reat fo rce .

Wheels
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for
proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's re­
sponsibility to maintain correct tire pressure,
even if under-inflation has not reached the level
to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pres­
sure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS
malfunction indicator to indicate when the sys­
tem is not operating properly. The TPMS mal­
function indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a
malfunction, the telltale will flash for approxi­
mately one minute and then remain continuously
illuminated. This sequence will continue upon
subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the mal­
function exists.
When the malfunction indicator is illuminated,
the system may not be able to detect or signal
low tire pressure as intended. TPMS malfunctions
may occur for a variety of reasons, including the
installation of replacement or alternate tires or
wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS
from functioning properly . Always check the
TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or
more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure
that the replacement or alternate tires and
wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function
properly.
If the tire pressure monitoring indicator
appears
Applies to: vehicles with Tire Pressure Monitoring System in­
dic ato r
The tire pressure indicator in the instrument
cluster informs you if the tire pressure is too low
or if there is a system malfunction.
Using the ABS sensors, the tire pressure monitor ­
ing system compares the tire tread circumfer­
ence and vibration characteristics of the individu­
al tires . If the pressure changes in one or more
tires, this is indicated in the instrument cluster
display with an indicator light
RI] and a message.
If only one tire is affected , the location of that
tire will be indicated.
The tire pressures must be stored in the Infotain­
ment system again each time the pressures

change (switching between partial and full load
pressure) or after changing or replacing a tire on
your vehicle ~
page 349. The tire pressure moni­
toring system only monitors the tire pressure you have stored. Refer to the tire pressure label for
the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle
~ page 340, fig . 272.
Tire tread circumference and vibration character­
istics can change and cause a tire pressure warn­
ing if:
- the tire pressure in one or more tires is too low
- the tires have structural damage
- the tire was replaced or the tire pressure was
changed and it was not stored

- tires that are only partially used are replaced
with new tires

Check the tires and replace or repair if necessary.
Check/correct the pressures of all four tires and
store the pressure again in the Infotainment sys­
tem

If
m appears after switching the ignition on or
while driving and the
RI] indicator light in the in­
strument cluster blinks for approximately one
minute and then stays on, there is system mal­
function. Try to store the correct tire pressures
~ page 349. In some cases, you must drive for
several minutes after storing the pressures until
the indicator light turns off . If the indicator light
does turn off or turns on again after a short peri­
od of time, drive to an authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility immediately to
have the malfunction corrected.
& WARNING
- If the tire pressure indicator appears in the
display, reduce your speed immediately and
avoid any hard steering or braking maneu­
vers. Stop as soon as possible and check the
tires and their pressure.

General information
Regular, proper ca re helps to maintain your ve hi­
cle's value. It can a lso be a requirement when
submitting warranty claims fo r cor rosion damage
and pa int defects on the body.
The requ ired cleaning and care p roducts can be
obtained from an authorized Audi dea le r or au ­
thor iz ed Se rvice Facility . Read and follow the in ­
structions for use on the packaging .

Car washes
T he longer that deposits s uch as insects, bird
d roppings, tree sap or road salt remain on the ve­
h icle, the more the surface can be damaged. High
temperatures such as those ca used by sun light
in crease the damag ing effect .
Before washing, r inse off heavy depos its with
p le nty of water.
St ubborn deposits s uch as bird d roppings or tree
sap are best removed with plenty of wate r and a
m icr ofibe r cloth.
A lso, wash t he un derside of yo ur vehicle once
road sa lt stops being used for the seaso n.
Pressure washers
When washing your ve hicle wit h a pressu re wash­
e r, al ways fo llow the operating instr uctions pro ­
v ided wi th t he p ress ure washer. This is espe cially
i mportant in rega rd to the p ressure and sp raying
d istance . Do not aim the sp ray directly at the

r oof * or at tires, r ubber hoses, insulat ing mater i­
al, sensors* or camera lenses* . Keep a distance of
at least 16 in (40 cm).

Automatic car washe s
Spray off the vehicle befo re washing.
Make s ure that the w indows and roo f* are closed
and the windsh ie ld wipers are off . Follow instruc ­
tions from the car wash ope rato r, especially if
the re are accesso ries attached to your vehicle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes .
Washing by hand
Clean the ve hicle starting from t he top and wor k­
in g down using a soft sponge o r clea ning br ush.
U se solven t-free cleaning p ro duc ts.
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint by
hand
To avo id da mag ing the p aint w hen w ashi ng, fi rs t
r emove dust and large p art icl es from you r vehi ­
cl e. Insects, grease spots and finger prints are
best removed w ith a s pecial cleane r fo r matte
f inish paint.
Apply t he p rodu ct using a microf iber cloth . To
avo id damag ing t he pa in t surface, do no t use too
much pressure.
Rinse t he ve hicl e thoroug hly w ith w ate r. T hen
cl ea n usi ng a neutra l shampoo an d a soft mi cro­
f iber cloth .
R inse t he ve hicle thoroug hly aga in and let it air
dry. Remove any wate r residue using a chamois.

from sharp metal components when was h­
ing the underbody or the inside of the wheel
housings .
- After washing the vehicle, the braking effect may be delayed due to mo isture on the
brake rotors or ice in the winter . This in­
creases the risk of an acc ident . The brakes
must be d ried first w it h a few careful b rake
applications.

wash, you must fold the exterior m irrors in
to reduce the risk of damage to the mirrors .

and t ires , compare the width be tween the
whee ls on your ve hicl e w it h t he distance be ­

- To reduce t he risk of damage, compare the
height and width o f you r vehicle with the heig
ht and w idth of the inside o f the car
was h.
- T o red uce the risk of pa in t damage, do not
was h the vehicle in direct sun light .
- T o red uce the risk of d amage to the s urf ace,
do not use insect removing sponges, k itchen
sponges or similar items .
- Matte finish painted vehicle components:
- To reduce the r isk of damage to the sur-
face, do not use polis hing agents or hard
wax .
- Never use protective wax. It can destroy
the matte finish effect .
- Do not place any stickers or magnet ic
signs on vehicle parts painted with matte
finish paint . The paint cou ld be damaged
when the stickers or magnets are re­
moved .

Only wash the ve hicle in facilities spec ia lly de­
s igned for that pu rpose . This will reduce the
r isk of dirty wate r contaminated with o il from
ente ring the sewe r system.
