Driving
you stop it. You also cannot lock the vehicle from
the outside.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if gearshift is not in
P
This message appears for safety reasons if the
selecto r lever is in the "N" position when you
switch the ignition off. Move the selector lever to
the "P" posit ion. Otherwise the vehicle is not pro­
tected from rolling and it cannot be locked.

I f the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction

Shift to P before leaving vehicle, otherwise vehi­
cle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is switched on and the
transmission has not been shifted to the "P" posi­
tion . Sh ift the transm iss ion into the "P" position
and turn off the ignition if you are leav ing the ve­
h icle. Otherwise the vehicle could roll. Also see
<=:>page 79.
Starting the engine when there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine under
certain circumstances, for example, if the bat ­
tery in the vehicle key is drained, if interference is
affecting the key or if there is a system malfunc­ tion.

Start/Stop system
Description
Appl ies to : vehicles wi th Start/Stop sys te m
The Start/Stop system can help increase fue l
economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
In Sta rt/S top mode, the engine sh uts off auto­
matically when stopped, for example at a traffic
li ght . The ignition and important assist systems
such as power steering and the brake booster will
remain available dur ing the "stop" phase. The en­
gine will restart automatically when needed.
The Start/Stop system is automat ica lly act ivated
as soon as the ignition is switched on.
Basic requirements
- Th e driver's door and hood must be closed.
- The "P", "N " or "D" selector lever position must
be engaged .
- The steering wheel must not be sharply turned .
- The vehicle must have dr iven faster than
2 mph
(3 km/h) since the last time it stopped.
- A trailer must not be hitched to the vehicle.

Driving
Drive quick ly through sandy or marshy off-road
sections and do not stop , if at all poss ibl e.

Driving on a slope
If you a re ever unable to dr ive up a hill , do not try
to turn around . Drive back down in
re verse in ­
stead. Otherwise you r un the r isk o f tipping over .
If the vehicle threatens to tip over when dr iving
across a slope , you mu st immediately stee r
downhill in the direction of the slope.
Do not park your vehicle on steep hills.
To reduce the r isk of t ipping over, dr ive on hills in
the direction of the downward s lope (fa ll line)

Tilt angle display
Description
Applies to: vehicles with a ti lt angle display

You c an see the vehicle pos ition in re lation to a
leve l plane us ing the tilt angle display in the In­
fotainment system . Bot h the sideways angle @
and the lengthwise angle @ of the vehicle are
disp layed. The accuracy depends on the driving
situation and is normally a round 1
°. The side­
ways angle of your vehicle should no t exceed the
ye llow range in the gauge . If it reaches the red
range, there is a risk that the ve hicle m ight tip

A WARNING
- Do not excee d the yellow range in the
g au ge. Your ve hicle can t ip, whi ch in cre as es
t he risk of an accident.
- Unde r some ci rcumstan ce s, the vehicle can
t ip ove r or til t sid eways eve n if the s ideways
angle is low. The angle display does not re ­
p lace the driver's attent io n. To re duce the
risk of an accident, make sure the vehicle
does not tip, especially when yo u are driving
at high speeds.
Automatic transmission
Introduction
The au tom atic transmission is con trolled ele c­
tronically. The transmission shifts up or down au­
tomat ica lly depending on which dr ive p rogram is
selected .
When a
moderate driving style i s used, t he
transm iss ion selec ts the most economica l driv ing
mode. The transmission upshifts at a lower RPM
and downshifts at a higher RPM to improve fue l
e fficiency.
The tra nsmission switches to a sporty mode after
a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty
driving style
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and t raveling at the max imum
speed .
If desired, th e driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 88.

Stopping temporarily

tened, and you accelerate as usual.
Stopping /parking
If the se lector lever is not in the "P" position
when yo u ope n the driver's door, the ve hicle
could rol l.

Under certain conditions, such as driving in the
mo unta ins or when towing a trailer, it may be
he lpful to switch to manual mode temporarily
and sh ift
manually to adapt to the driving condi­
tions

On hills, set the parking brake first and then s hift
into the "P" position
¢ page 80. This prevents too
much stress from being placed on the locking
mechanism .
A WARNING
- The veh icle can roll even when the engine is
switched off .
- Unintended veh icle movement can lead to
serious injur ies .
- To reduce the risk of an accident, do not
press the acce lera to r pedal when changing
the se lector lever posi tion while the vehi cle
is sta tionary an d the engine is running.
Driving
- To reduce the r is k of an accident, neve r se­
lect the "R" or "P" pos itions wh ile d riving.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stationa ry. Other­
wise the r is k of an accident increases be­
cause the vehicle will start to move immedi­
ately, even if the parking brake is set .
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down hills.
Hi ll d escent cont rol activates when the t ransmis ­
s ion is in the "D" or "S" pos ition and you press the
brake pedal. The transmission automatica lly se­
lects a gear that is s uitable for the hill. Hill de­
scent cont rol tr ies to maintain the speed ach ­
ieved a t the t ime of b raking, w it hi n physical a nd
tec hnical lim itations . If may still be necessary to
adjus t the speed w it h t he bra ke pedal.
Hill descent con trol switches off once the hill lev ­
els out or you press the accelerator pedal.
When operat ing the cru ise cont rol system*
¢ page 95, hill descent contro l is a lso activated
whe n the speed is set .

-
Hill descent cont rol cannot ove rcome physical
li mitat ions, so it may not be able to ma intain

Shifting manually (tiptronic mode)
The tiptronic mode allows the driver to shift the
gears manually.

Shifting with the selector lever
You can sh ift into tiptronic mode while stationary
and while driv ing.
" To sh ift into tiptronic mode, push the selector
lever from the "D/S" position to the right . As
soon as the transmission switches over, the "M"
t ransm ission sett ing will appear in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay.
"T o shift up a gear, tap the se lector lever for­
ward 0 ¢ ffg. 91 .
.. To sh ift down a gear, tap the selector lever
backward

.. To switch tiptronic mode off, push the selector
lever back into the "D/S " pos ition.
Shifting with the shift paddle s
You can operate the shift padd les in the "D/S" or
"M" se lector lever positions .

.. To engage the lowest gear, hold the 0 shift
paddle .
.. If you do not press a shift b utton within a sho rt
time while in the "D/S " position , the transmis­
sion will return to automatic mode . To keep
shifting using the shift paddles, move these ­
lector leve r to the right out of the "D/S" posi­
tion .

period of time or move the se lector lever back
and release it.
The transmission a utomatica lly shifts up or dow n
before cr itical engi ne speed is reac hed.
The transmission on ly allows manual shifting
whe n the eng ine speed is w ith in the perm itted
r ange.
(D Tips
- If you shift to the next lowest gear, the
t ransmission will only s hift if the engi ne will
not be over-revved.
- With k ick-down, the t ransmiss ion shifts to a
lower gear, depen ding on vehi cle spee d and
eng ine speed.
- ti ptr onic does not work if the transmission
is runni ng in emergency mode .
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal down be­
yond the res istance point, t he automatic trans­
mission downshifts into a lower gear and the en­
gine ut il izes its full power, depending on vehicle
speed and engine RPM. It shifts up in to the next
highe r gear once the maximum specified engine
RPM is reached .
A WARNING
P lease note that the whee ls cou ld spin on
slick or slippery roads when kick-down is ac­
tive.

Driving

lector lever position again. You can then continue
driving.

The transm ission tempe rature has increased s ig­
n ificant ly. Dr ive ve ry ca utiously or take a b reak
from dr iv ing unt il the tempera ture returns to the
normal range and the ind icator light turns off .
[O] Transmis sion : malfunction ! You can contin­
ue driving . See owner' s manual
There is a system malfunct ion in the transm is­
sion . You may continue dr iv ing . Drive to an au­
thor ized A udi dealer or authorized Audi Service
F acility soon to have the malfunction co rrected.
[il T ransmission : malfunct ion! You can contin­
ue dri ving in D until engine is off
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion . The transmission is switching to emergency
mode . If you tur n the engine off, you will not be
able to select any other selector lever pos it ions
after start ing the eng ine again . Drive to a n au­
thor ized Audi dealer or author ized A udi Service
F a cility immediately to have the malfunc tion cor­
rected.
[O] Tran smis sion: malfunction! You can contin­
ue driving with limited function . Pl ea se conta ct

There is a system malfunct ion i n the transm is­
sion . The transmission is switching to emergency

There is a system malfunction in the tra nsmis­
s ion . The transmission is switch ing to emergency
mode. This mode only s hifts into certain gears or
will no longer shift at a ll. The eng ine may sta ll.
You cannot engage the reverse gear. Drive to an
authori zed Audi dealer or authori zed Audi Service
Facility immediately to have the ma lfunction cor ­
rected .

the left into the "D/S " position .
Parking lock emergency release
The parking lock must be released with the
emergency release when driving through moun ­
tains/maneuvering .

Emergency call
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with emergency call fu nction
Depending on the country and the vehicle equip ­
ment, the following functions may be available.
W ith the
emergency call, you can call for he lp in
dangerous situat ions as quickly as possible. Use
this function when emergency he lp is needed
~ page 201.
W ith online roadside assistance, you can request
assistance if there is a breakdown or a minor acci­
dent
q page 202.
(D Tips
- The services are provided through a SIM
card installed in the vehicle. The cost of the
ca ll and data connections is included in the
price for the services. Services are provided
assuming that the cell phone network re­
quired for the installed SIM card is function­
ing and ready to operate . The available serv­
ices set by Audi AG are only available within
the cell phone network coverage area for
the cell phone service provider selected by
Audi AG.
- You can find what data will be transferred
at www.audiusa.com.
- These serv ices cannot be deactivated using
the settings in the Infotainment system.
Emergency call
Description
Applies to: vehicles with emergency call function
An emergency call is a combination of data trans­
mission and a phone call. The data transmission
from your vehicle forwards important informa­
tion, such as the vehicle and position data, to the
emergency call center .

Making an emergency call
Applies to: vehicles with emergency call function
The emergency call can be made two different
ways.

Requirement: the L ED @ must be green.
Manual emergency call
Requirement: the ignition must be switched on.
.,. Tap the cover(!) to open it.
.,. Press and hold the emergency call button until
the LED @blinks green. The emergency call is
made.
.,. If the emergency call button is pressed by mis­
take, then press it again immediately until the
LED stays green. The emergency call is can­
celed .
Automatic emergency call
The vehicle electrical system initiates an auto­
matic emergency call under certain circumstan ­
ces, for example if an airbag deploys. The LED in
the emergency call button @blinks green . The
emergency call is made . This cannot be canceled.
Note the following LED conditions :
-Green -the emergency call function is availa­
ble.
- Red -there is an e rror in the emergency call
function. Contact an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility. No emergency
call can be made.
-Off-the emergency call function is not availa-
ble, perhaps because no network is available.

Fuel filler door emergency release
If the central locking system is faulty, the fuel filler door can be unlocked manually.

You will not hear it release. Otherwise you could damage the emergency release mecha­
nism.

Emissions control
system
Cat alytic con verter
The vehicle may only be driven with unleaded
gasoline, otherwise the catalytic converter will be
destroyed.
Never drive until the tank is completely empty .
The irregu lar supply of fuel that results from that
can cause engine misfires. Uncombusted fuel will
enter the exhaust system, which can cause over­
heating and damage to the catalytic converter .
A WARNING
The temperature of the exhaust system is
hi gh, both when driv ing and after stopping
the eng ine.
-
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they
have be come hot. This cou ld resu lt in burns.
- Do not park your veh icle over flammable
mate ria ls such as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the emissions con­
trol system could start a fire.
- Do not app ly unde rbody protectant in the
exhaust sys tem area, beca use this increases
the risk of f ire.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
The On-Board Diagnostic System monitors the
engine and transmission components that influ­
ence emissions .
