supplier.
- Do not use fuel for which the contents can
not be identif ied.

fuel.
Gasoline additives
Applies to: vehicles with gasoline engine
A majo r concern among many auto manufactur
ers is carbon deposit build-up caused by the type
of gasoline you use.
A lthough gasoline grades d iffer from one manu
facturer to another, they have cer tain things in
common . A ll gasoline grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on vita l engine
parts, such as fue l injectors and intake valves . A l
though most gasoline brands include additives to keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effective.
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gas
oline. For more informat ion on TOP TIER Deter
gent Gasoline, please go to the official website (www .toptiergas .com) .
Check ing and F illing
A fter an extended period of using inadequate
fuels, carbon deposit bui ld-ups can rob your en
gine of peak performance.
@ Note
Damage or ma lf u nction due to poor fue l qual
ity is not covered by the A udi New Vehicle
L imited Warranty .
Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fue l filler neck is located on the rig ht rea r
s ide panel behind the fuel fille r flap .
If the power lock ing system should fa il, yo u can
st ill open the flap manually - fo r detailed instruc
tions see
~page 271.
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your vehicle
i n
~ page 334 .
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap tells
you the correct fuel for your vehicle. For more in
format ion about fuel spec ificat ions, see
~ page 268 .
Your vehicle fuel tank has an onboard refuelling
vapor recovery system. T his feature helps to pre
vent fuel vapors from escaping from the tank and polluting the environment wh ile you refuel your
vehicle. In o rder to fill the tank proper ly w hile

Checking and Filling
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fuel tank is
completely empty. The irregular supply of
fuel can cause m isfiring. Gasoline cou ld enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalyt ic
converter.
Fueling procedure

filler door
F ig. 253 Fue l filler doo r w it h attac hed fuel cap
The f uel fi ller door is unlocked or locked by the
central lock ing system.
Opening the fuel cap
• Presson the left s ide of the fuel filler door to
open
¢ fig . 252 .
• Unscrew the tank cap counterclockw ise.
• Place the cap from above on the open fue l filler
door
¢ fig. 253.
Clo sing th e fu el cap
• Screw the tank cap on to the r ight on the filler
neck until it cannot turn any farther .
• Close the fuel filler door and then press on the
left side until it latches.
270
Once the pump nozzle switches off, the fuel tank
is "full". Do not fill the tank more. Otherwise the
expans ion space in the tank w ill be filled.
The correct fuel type for your vehicle can be
fo und on a label located on the inside of the fuel
filler door . For additional information on fuel,
see ¢
pag e 268.
The fuel tank capacity of your veh icle is listed in
the
T echn ical Dat a section ¢ page 334.
To avo id fuel spilling or evaporat ing from the fuel
tank always close fue l cap prope rly and com
plete ly. An improper ly closed f uel fi ller cap may
also cause the M IL lamp ¢
page 25 to come on.
A WARNING
Not pay ing attention when fueling or han
dling fuel incorrectly can lead to fires, explo
sions or serious injur ies.
- Fue l ignites easily and can cause serious
burns and other injur ies.
-
- If you do not switch the engine off when fu
eling and/or do not insert the fuel nozzle
completely into the tank open ing, fuel can
leak out or run over. Leaked fuel can ignite
and start a fire .
- Do not use the telephone while fueling . The
electromagnetic rays can cause sparks,
which can ignite fuel vapors and start a fire .
- Do not sit in your vehicle wh ile fueling. If
you must make an exception and enter your
veh icle again while fueling, close the door
a nd touch metal to d ischa rge stat ic elect ric
ity before to uching the f uel no zz le. Static
e lec tricity ca n create spa rks, which ca n ig
n ite vapors when fueling.
- Do not smoke or have an open flame in the
a rea whe n fue lin g you r veh icle or filling a
fue l container because this increases the
risk of an explosion.
- F or your safety, carrying fuel containe rs in
your veh icle is not recommended . Whet her
fu ll or empty, the container can leak and
cause a fire in the event of an accident.
- If you must make an exception and trans
port a fuel container, note the fo llowing:

A pp lies to: ve hicles w ith gasoline engines
The vehicle may on ly be driven with unleaded
gasoline, otherwise the catalyt ic converter will be
destroyed.
Never d rive until the tank is comp letely empty .
The irregular supp ly of f uel that results from that
can cause engine m isfires. Uncombusted fuel will
enter the exhaust system , w hich can cause over
heating and damage to the catalyt ic converter .
A WARNING

Engine compartment
Working in the engine compartment
Special core is required if you ore working in the
engine comportment
For work in the engine compartment such as
checking and filling fluids, there is a risk of in
jury , scalding , accidents, and burns . For this
reason, follow all the warnings and general
safety precautions provided in the following in
formation . The engine compartment is a dan
gerous area on the vehicle .

A WARNING
- T urn the engine off.
- Switch the ign ition off .
- Set the parking b rake .
- Select the P selector leve r pos ition.
272
- Let the eng ine cool down .
- Never open the hood when there is steam o r
coo lant escapin g from the engine compart
ment, because there is a risk that yo u could
be burned. Wait unt il no steam or coolant is
escaping.
- Keep children away from the eng ine com
pa rtment.
- Never sp ill fluids on a hot engine. These flu
ids (such as the anti-freezing agent con
tained in the coolant) can ignite .
- Avoid short c ircuits in the electrical system.
- When working in the engine compa rtment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, wh ich
increases the r isk of persona l injury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan
sion tank when the engine is warm. The
cooli ng system is under p ressure .
- To protect your face, hands, and a rms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
- Do not remove the engine cove r under any
circumstances . T his increases the risk of
burns.
- If tests need to be perfo rmed with the en
gine running, there is add itiona l danger due
to mov ing components (such as the r ibbed
be lt, alterna tor and rad iator fan) and from
the high-voltage ignition system.
- Do not unde r any circ ums tances activate the
throttle inadvertently (for example, by hand
from t he e ngine compartment) if the veh i
cle is stat ionary but the en gine is r un ning
an d a gea r is en gaged. Otherwise, the veh i
cle will start to move immediately and this
could result in an acc ident .
- Pay a ttent ion to the following wa rnings lis t
e d w hen wor k on the fue l system o r on the
electrical equipment is require d.
- Do no t smoke.
- Never work near open flames .
- Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby.
- All work on the battery or elect rical system
in your vehicle can result in injuries, chemi
