What can the braking guard do?
When detected in t ime, the system can assess
dangerous situations where an object ahead
brakes suddenly or if your own vehicle is traveling
at a high speed and approaching an object that is moving more slowly. The braking guard does not
react if it cannot detect the s ituation.
The system advises you of various dangerous sit­ uations :
- T he
dista nce warning occurs if you d rive too
closely to the object ahead for a long period of
time. If the object ahead brakes strongly, you
would not be able to avoid a collision .
The.
indicator light appears as an indication for this.
- The
app ro ach warning occurs when an object
ahead is traveling more slow ly or brakes
strongly. When th is warning occurs, it may only
be possible to avoid a co llision by swerv ing or
braking strongly . The danger is indicated by the
• ind icator light ¢ fig . 98 . An aud io signal w ill
also sound .
If you do not react early enough or at all to a dan­
ge rous situation, the braking guard suppo rts you
with a brak ing intervention .
- If a collision is imminent, the system will f irst
provide an
a cut e warn ing by braking sharply.
- If you do not react to the acute warning, the braking guard can increase the braking force
within the limits of the system

the vehicle speed in the event of a collision .
- The system can init iate comp lete deceleration
shortly before a collision

high speeds occurs only in vehicles with adap­
tive cru ise control and s ide ass ist (pre sense

- If the braking gua rd determines that you are
not brak ing strongly enough whe n there is an
im pending co llision, it can increase the bra king
force .

A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause collisions, other
accidents and ser ious personal injuries . The
braking guard is an assist system and cannot
prevent a collis ion by itself . The dr iver must
a lways intervene. The d river is always respon­
sib le for braking at the co rrect t ime.
- Always pay close attention to traffic, even
when the b raking guard is sw itched on. Be
ready to intervene and be ready to take
co mplete co ntro l whenever necessa ry . Al ­
ways keep the sa fe and legal distance be ­
tween your vehicle and ve hicles up ahead .
- Br aki ng g uard wo rks w ithin limits and w ill
no t respond outside the system limits, for
examp le when approaching a stopped vehi ­
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic
jam or ve hicle that has broken down in traf ­
fic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the brak ing guard works only within defined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the proper detection of other vehicles .
- The radar sensor's function and range can
be reduced by rain, snow and heavy spray.
Mov ing veh icles up ahead may not be
promptly detected or may not be detected
at al l.
- Reflective surfaces including crash ba rr iers
or tunne l entra nces may impair the function
of the rada r senso r.
(D Tips
- You can cancel the braking with increas ing
force that is initiated by the system by brak­ ing yourse lf, by acce le rating not iceably or
by swerv ing.
- Keep in mind that b raking gua rd can b rake
unexpectedly. A lways secure a ny cargo or

This message appears if you would like to switch
adaptiv e cruis e control on and there is a station­
ary object or obstacle directly ahead of your vehi­
cle.

Preventative passenger protection
Applies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense
P re sense can initiate steps to p rotect vehicle oc ­
cupants in certain dangerous situations. The
functions described are available depending on
vehicle equipment :
Pre sense basic *
The fo llow ing f unc tions can be t rigge red in ce r­
tain driving s it u ations:
- T ens ion ing of the safety belts (for example,
dur ing heavy b raking): the front safety belts
have reve rsible belt tensioners. If a coll is io n
does not occur, the safe ty belts loosen slightly
and are ready to trigger again.
- Clos ing the w indows and the sun roof* (for ex ­
amp le, when ove r-or unde rsteer ing) : the w in ­
dows and the sunroof * close until there is only
a small gap open .
The function of the pre sense basi c is act ivated at
a speed o f 20 mph (30 km/h) o r higher.
Dr ive se lect : th e deployment time is adapted in
Dynam ic mode.
Pre sense front (vehicles with adapti ve cru ise
control *}
Pre sense front contains t he f unct ions of p re
sense basic. In add it ion, the like lih ood of a rear ­
e n d coll is io n with the veh icle ahead is also calcu ­
lated, withi n the limits of the system .
If the risk
of a collision is detected, t he following functions
can trigger :

Pre sense rear (vehicles with side a ssi st * }
Pre sense rear contains the funct ions of pre sense
basic . In addition, the likelihood of a rear-end
collision from the vehicle behind is also calculat­
ed, within the limits of the system . If the r isk of a
collision is detected, the following functions can
t rigge r:
- Tensioning of the safety belts
- Closing the windows and the sunroof*
Pre sen se plu s*
Pre sense plus contains t he functions of pre
sense front and pre sense rear.

- Pre sense does not react to peop le or ani­
mals or objects that are crossing the vehi­

entrance to a tunne l, heavy rain and ice can
affect the funct ion of the radar sensors and

driving in reverse .
- The pre sense functions may not be availa­
ble if there is a malfunction in the ESC sys­
tem or the airbag control module.

adaptive cruise control* system

Audi active lane assist
Description
Applies to: veh icles with Audi active lane assist
Active lane assist detects lane marker lines with ­
in the limits of the system using a camera in the
windshield. If you are approaching a detected lane marker line and it appears likely that you
will leave the lane, the system will warn you with
corrective steering . You can override this steering
at any time . If you pass over a line, the steer ing
wheel will v ibrate lightly. In order for this warn­
ing vibration to occur, it must first be sw itched
on in the Infotainment system. Active lane assist
is ready for operation when the lane marker line
is detected on at least one side of the vehicle.
The system is designed for driving on express­
ways and highways and therefore only activates
at speeds above approximately 40 mph (65 km/
h).
Applies to: vehicles with s ide assist
If you activate a turn signal when active lane as­
sist is ready and it classifies a lane change as crit­
ical because of vehicles traveling alongside you or
approaching you, there will be noticeable correc-

tive steering shortly before you leave the lane.
This will attempt to keep your vehicle in the lane.
Applies to: vehicles w it h out side ass ist
The system will not warn you before crossing a
lane marker line if you have activated the turn
s ignal. In this case, it assumes that you are
changing lanes intentionally.
Applies to: veh icles w it h adaptive cruise contro l
The corrective steering is targeted based on the
driving situation. In addition to the lane marker
lines , the system can also take into account other
objects such as guard rails . If they are detected in
close proximity to the vehicle, active lane assist
helps prevent the vehicle from driving too close
to them. There is also passing ass istance. The
system does not provide any corrective steering if
it detects that you are passing another vehicle.
A WARNING ~ -
-The system warns the driver that the vehicle
is leaving the lane using corrective steering.
The driver is always responsible for keeping
the vehicle within the lane.
- The system can help you keep the vehicle in
the lane, but it does not drive by itself. Al­
ways keep your hands on the steering
wheel.
- Corrective steering may not occur in certain
situations, such as during heavy braking.
- There may be cases where the camera does
not recognize all lane marker lines. Correc­
tive steering can only take place on the side
of the vehicle where lane marker lines are
detected.
- Other road structures or objects could possi­
b ly be identified unintentionally as lane
marker lines. As a result, corrective steering
may be unexpected or may not occur.
- The camera view can be restricted, for ex­
ample by vehicles driving ahead or by ra in,
snow, heavy spray or light shining into the
camera. This can result in active lane assist
not detecting the lane marker lines or de­
tecting them incorrectly .

Assistance systems
-Under certain conditions such as ruts in the
road, a banked roadway or crosswinds, the
corrective steering alone may not be enough
to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane.
- For safety reasons, active lane assist must
not be used when there are poor road and/
or weather conditions such as slippery
roads, fog, gravel, heavy rain, snow and the
potential for hydroplaning. Using active lane
assist under these conditions may increase
the risk of a crash.

Indicator lights
• Ready: the indicator light turns on when the
system is ready for use . The system can now be
operated .
• Not ready: the indicator light turns on if the
system is switched on but is inoperable. This may
be due to the following reasons:

-Th ere is no lane marker line.
-The relevant lan e marker lines are not detected
(for example, markings in a construction zone
or because they are obstructed by snow, dirt,
water or lighting).
-Th e vehicle speed is below the activation speed
of approximate ly 40 mph (65 km/h).
-The lane is too narrow or too wide.
-The curve is too narrow.
-The driver's hands are not on the steering
wheel.

Night vision assist with
pedestrian and wild
animal detection
Description
Applies to : vehicles wit h night vision assist
The night vision assist con detect, highlight and,
if n ecessary, warn about p ed estrians and large
wild animals.
Night vision assist wit h pedest rian and wi ld ani ­
mal detection assists you at night by using an in­
frared camera to monitor the a rea in front of
your vehicle, within the limits of the system. It can d isplay objects up to a distance of approxi­
mately 1000 feet (300 m). The thermal image
detected by the camera is shown in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay. Wa rm areas appear lighter
and co ld areas appear da rker.

area in front of your vehicle that is classified as

critical, the system will direct your attention to

The area classified as critical is based on the vehi­
cle speed and the steering wheel angle. Pedes­
trian and wild animal warning encourages you to pay more attention.
If the night vision assist image is replaced by an­
other display (such as the on-board computer),

red . or. indicator light c:> fig. 111 will
appear if there is a pedestrian or wild animal
warning.
If the head-up display* is switched on and the
night vision assist content is activated, .

Marking light*
To direct the driver's attention to a pedestrian,
the headlights can flash on the pedestrian three
times in a row when there is a pedestrian warn­
ing.
This occurs at speeds above approximately
35 mph (60 km/h) if you are outside of illuminat­
ed areas and no detected vehicles are shown. The
high beam assistant* controls the marking light*
c:> page 39, High beam assistant.
The marking light is not used for wild animals .

of the night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow, rain, fog or heavy
spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision assist camera
c::> fig. 112 is not covered by stickers, deposits or
any other obstructions because that can affect
the camera function. For information on clean­
ing, see
c::> page 221 .
The pedestrian and wild animal recognition de­
pends on the temperature difference between
the person/wild animal and the background. Peo­ ple/wild animals may not be detected if the dif­
ference is too small. The pedestrian/wild animal
marking and the marking light* deactivate at
temperatures above approximately 77 °F (25 °C)
and during daylight.
If the night vision assist im­
age is selected in the instrument cluster display,
then the
D symbol appears at the top on the
right side .
_&, WARNING
Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for as­
sessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display.
- Night vision assist may not detect people or
wild animals and mark them if
-they are not in an upright position, for ex­
ample if they are sitting or lying down
and/or
-the silhouette in the display appears in­
complete or interrupted, for example be­
cause the person is partially covered by a
vehicle or the animal is partially covered
by tall grass. This could increase the risk
of an accident.
- Never try to swerve around animals if doing
so will endanger you or other road users, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
Assistance systems

-Even though the system evaluates the
shape and heat given off by all detected ob­
jects, there are limits to the system . There
may be false warnings.
-For technical reasons, the image pauses in
split second intervals.
Switching on/off

Requirement: switch the ignition on and turn the
