When the system is tr iggered, t he side curta in
ai rbag is filled with propellant gas and breaks
through a seam above the front and rear side
windows identif ied by the AIRBAG labe l. In order
to help provide this addit ional protection, the
side curtain airbag must inflate within the blink
of an eye at very h igh speed and with great force .
The s ide curta in a irbag could injure you if your
seating position is not proper or upright or if
items are loca ted in the a rea whe re t he supp le­
mental side curta in air bag inflates . T his applies
espec ia lly to children

Although they a re not a soft p illow, side curtain
a ir bags can "cushion " the impact and in this way
they can help to red uce the risk of inj ury to the
h ead and t he upper part of t he body .
A fi ne dust may deve lop when the airbag deploys .
This is quite normal and does not mean there is a
fi re in t he ve hicl e.
Important safety instructions on the side
curtain airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints . Always
properly wear safety belts and ride in a proper
seating position .
There is a lot th at yo u and your passengers m ust
know and do to he lp the safety be lts and airbags
do their job to provide supp lemental protection .
A WARNING
Improperly wearing safety belts and improper
seating posit ions increase the risk of serious
personal injury and death whenever a vehicle
is being used .
- Never let occ upants p lace any parts of the ir
bodies in the area from which the side cur­
ta in a irbag inflate .
- Always make sure that the side curtain air­
bags can inflate witho ut interference .
- Use the built- in coat hooks on ly for light­
we ight cloth ing. Never leave any heavy or
sharp-edged objects in the pockets that may

cause persona l injury in a co llision.
- Never use hangers to hang clot hes on t he
hooks.
- On ly use factory-insta lled sun shades or, if
shades installed after the vehicle leaves the
factory, use on ly gen uine A udi su n shades.
- Never swing the su n visors over to the side
windows if things s uch as pens, garage door
openers, hands-free speakers, etc. are at­
tached to the sun v isors. They could come
loose and cause ser ious injury if the s ide c ur­
tain airbag inflates .
- A dep loying airbag inflates in a fract ion of a
second and w ith great force .
- Never attach ob jects to the cover or i n the
deployment zone of a s ide curtain airbag .
- The a irbag deployment zones must be kept
clear at all t imes . Make s ure there are no
objects, pets, o r other persons in the space
between any vehicle occupant and any air­
bag at any t ime .
- Do not attac h any accessories to the doors .

the airbag has been trigge red, the system
mu st be rep laced by an au thor ized A udi
de aler or q ualified wo rks hop .
- Always have wo rk invo lv ing t he side curtai n

performed by a q ualified dea lership . Other ­
wise the airbag system may not work cor ­
rectly.
- Neve r attempt to modify any components of
the airbag system i n any way .

A tether is a stra ight or V-shaped strap that at­
taches the top part of a child restra int to special
anchorage points in the vehicle.
The purpose of the tether is to red uce the for­
ward movement of the child res tra int in a crash,
in order to help red uce the risk of head injury
that could be caused by striking the veh icle inte­
rio r.
F orward facing ch ild res traints manufactured af ­
ter September 1, 1999, are required by U.S. fed­
eral regulations to comply with new child head
movement performance requirements. These
new perfo rmance r equirements make a tether
necessary on most new child safety seats .
A WARNING
Improper installation of child restraints will
increase the risk of injury and death in a
crash .
-Always follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer of the child restra int you
intend to install in your Aud i.
-Improper use of child restra int anchors (in­
cluding tether anchors) can lead to injury in
a collision . The anchors are designed to
withstand only those lo ads imposed by cor­
rectly fitted child restra ints.
-Never mount two chi ld restraint systems on
one LATCH lower a nchor po int.
Ch ild s afe ty
-Never attach two child restraint systems to
one tether strap or tether anchorage.
-Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down
hook in the luggage compartment.
-Never use child restraint tether anchorages
to secure safety be lts or other kinds of occu­
pant restraints.
-Never secure or attach any luggage or other
items to the LATCH lower anchorages or to
the tether anchors.
-If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear seating position and have the a irbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer.

To reduce the risk of lime sca le deposits on the
spray nozzles, use clean water w ith low amounts
of calc ium . Always add window cleaner to the wa­
ter . When the outs ide temperatures are cold, an
anti-freez ing agent should be added to the water
so that it does not freeze.
0 Note
- The concentration of anti-freezing agent
must be adjusted to the vehicle operating
cond itions in the respect ive climate. A con­
centration that is too high can lead to vehi­
cl e damage.
Checking and Filling
- Never add radiato r anti -freeze or other addi­
tives to the washer fluid .
- Do not use a glass cleaner that contains
paint solvents, because this could damage
the paint.
Service interval display
The service interval display detects when your ve ­
hicle is due for service .
The service interval display works in two stages:
-Inspection or oil change reminder : after a cer-
tain distance driven, a message appears in the
instrument cluster display each time the igni­
tion is switched on or off. The remaining dis­
tance or time is disp layed briefly.
-Inspection or oil change due: if your vehicle
has reached an inspection or oil change interval
or both intervals at the same time, the mes­
sage
Inspection due! or Oil change due! or Oil
change and inspection due!
appears briefly af­
ter switching the ignition on/off .
Checking service intervals
You can check the remaining distance or time un ­
til the next oi l change or next inspection in the
Car menu. To do this, select: the
I CAR I function
button

& control > Service intervals .
Resetting the indicator
An authorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi
Service Facility w ill reset the service interval dis­
play after perform ing service .
If you have changed the oi l yourse lf, you must re ­
set the oil change interval.

- Remove snow and ice on windows and ex-
terior mirrors with a plast ic scraper. To

- Paint
-To red uce the risk of scratches, the vehicle
must be free of dirt and dus t before pol­

- Remove cosmetics and sunscreen immedi­

- Make sure that no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could cause damage.

- Do not remove the safety belts to clean

- Never clean safety belts or their compo­
nents chemically or with cor rosive fl uids
or so lvents and neve r allow sh arp obje cts
t o come into con ta ct w ith the sa fe ty belts.

bing .
- If the re is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the b uckles,
have them replaced by an authorized Audi
dea ler or authorized Audi Service Facility.

polish, shoe polish, spot remove or similar
prod ucts .
- Have a specialist remove st ubborn stains
to prevent damage.
