Activating the device
The device is enabled on all the doors by
pressing the button
on the key twice
quickly. Device activation is indicated by
3 flashes of the direction indicators and a
flash of the LED on the button
on the
dashboard. The device does not come on
if one or more doors is not properly shut.
Deactivating the device
The device disengages automatically:
the key insert is turned to opening
position in the driver side door;
by pressing the buttonon the key;
by turning the ignition key to the MAR
position.
IMPORTANT Once the safe lock system
is engaged, it is impossible to open the
doors from inside the car. Therefore,
before getting out of the car check that
there is no one left on board. If the
remote control battery is flat, the device
can only be deactivated by using the
metal insert in one of the door locks.
WARNING
1)Press button 2 only with the key away
from your body, especially your eyes and
from objects which could get damaged (e.g.
your clothes). Do not leave the key
unattended to avoid the button being
accidentally pressed while it is being
handled, e.g. by a child.
IMPORTANT
1)Used batteries may be harmful to the
environment if not disposed of correctly.
They must be disposed of as specified by law
in the special containers or taken to an Alfa
Romeo Dealership, which will take care of
their disposal.
IGNITION DEVICE
The key can be turned to three different
positions fig. 4:
STOP: engine off, key can be removed,
steering column locked. Some electrical
devices (e.g. radio, central door locking
system, alarm, etc.) are enabled;
MAR: driving position. All electrical
devices are enabled;
AVV: engine starting.
The ignition device is fitted with a safety
system that requires the ignition key to
be turned back to STOP if the engine
does not start, before the starting
operation can be repeated.
2) 3)
STEERING LOCK
Activation
When the key is at STOP, remove the key
and turn the steering wheel until it locks.

Deactivation
Move the steering wheel slightly and turn
the ignition key to MAR.
4) 5)
WARNING
2)If the ignition device has been tampered
with (e.g. an attempted theft), have it
checked over by the Alfa Romeo Dealership
before driving again.
3)Always remove the key when you leave
your car to prevent someone from
accidentally operating the controls.
Remember to engage the handbrake.
Engage first gear if the vehicle is parked
uphill or reverse if the vehicle is parked
downhill. Never leave children unattended in
the vehicle.
4)It is absolutely forbidden to carry out any
after-market operation involving steering
system or steering column modifications
(e.g. installation of anti-theft device) that
could adversely affect performance and
safety, invalidate the warranty and also
result in the car not meeting type-approval
requirements.
5)Never remove the key while the car is
moving. The steering wheel will
automatically lock as soon as it is turned.
This holds true for cars being towed as well.
ALFA ROMEO CODESYSTEM
The Alfa Romeo Code prevents
unauthorised use of the vehicle, disabling
engine starting.
1)
Operation
Each time the car is started by turning
the ignition key to MAR, the Alfa Romeo
CODE system control unit sends an
acknowledgement code to the
Powertrain Control Module to deactivate
the inhibitor.
The code is sent only if the Alfa Romeo
CODE system control unit has recognised
the code transmitted by the key.
Each time the ignition key is turned to
STOP, the Alfa Romeo CODE system
deactivates the functions of the
Powertrain Control Module.
Irregular operation
If, during starting, the code is not
correctly recognised, the icon
appears on the instrument panel.
In this case, turn the key to STOP and
then to MAR-ON; if it is still locked, try
again with the other keys that come with
the car. If it is still not possible to start
the engine, contact an Alfa Romeo
Dealership.Activation of warning light while
driving
If the iconappears on the display,
this means that the system is running a
self-diagnosis (for example due to a
voltage drop).
If the iconcontinues to be
displayed, contact an Alfa Romeo
Dealership.
IMPORTANT
1)The electronic components inside the key
may be damaged if the key is subjected to
strong shocks. In order to ensure complete
efficiency of the electronic devices inside the
key, it should never be exposed to direct
sunlight.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR
Move the stalk upwards (unstable
position) to limit operation to the time
for which the stalk is held in this position.
When released, the stalk will return to its
default position and the windscreen
wiper will be automatically stopped.
“Smart washing” function
Pull the stalk towards the steering wheel
(unstable position) to operate the
windscreen washer. Keep the stalk pulled
for more than half a second to operate
the windscreen washer jet and wiper
automatically with a single movement.
The windscreen wiper stops working
three strokes after the stalk is released.
A further stroke after approx. 6 seconds
completes the wiping cycle.
RAIN SENSOR
(for versions/markets, where provided)
It can detect the presence of rain and
consequently manage windscreen wiping
in accordance with the amount of water
on the windscreen.
The sensor is activated when the ring 2
fig. 22 is turned to "automatic" position
("AUTO" control): the windscreen wiper
stroke frequency is thus adjusted in
accordance with the amount of water on
the windscreen.
If no rain is detected, the wiper will not
carry out any strokes. If the engine is switched off with the
lever in the automatic position, when the
car is next started, no wiping cycle will
take place even if it is raining. This is to
prevent unwanted activation of the rain
sensor when the engine is started (i.e.
when the windscreen is being washed by
hand or the wiper blades are stuck to the
windscreen by ice).
To restore automatic operation of the
rain sensor, turn the ring on the right stalk
2 fig. 22 from automatic position (AUTO)
to positionOand then turn ring 2 back to
the AUTO position.
When the rain sensor is reactivated using
any of the manoeuvres described above,
reactivation is indicated by a single
stroke of the windscreen wipers,
regardless of the condition of the
windscreen.
REAR WINDOW WIPER/WASHER
(for versions/markets, where provided)
This operates only with the ignition key
turned to MAR.
Turn ring 1 fig. 22 from positionOto
position
to operate the rear window
wiper as follows:
in intermittent mode when the
windscreen wiper is not operating;
in synchronous mode (at half the
speed of the windscreen wiper) when the
windscreen wiper is operating;
in continuous mode with reverse gear
engaged and the control active.
Pushing the stalk towards the dashboard
(rocking position) will activate the rear
window washer jet. Keep the stalk pushed
for more than half a second to activate
the rear window wiper as well. Releasing
the stalk will activate the smart washing
function, as described for the windscreen
wiper.
IMPORTANT
5)Never use the windscreen wipers to
remove layers of snow or ice from the
windscreen. In such conditions, the
windscreen wiper may be subjected to
excessive stress and the motor cut-out
switch, which prevents operation for a few
seconds, may intervene. If operation is not
restored (even after restarting that car with
the key), contact an Alfa Romeo Dealership.
6)Do not operate the windscreen wiper with
the blades lifted from the windscreen.

Turning off
Mover the lever 1 fig. 33 to the "Natural"
position;
TURNING“All Weather” MODE ON/OFF
Activation
Move lever 1 fig. 33 downwards (to the
letter “a”) and hold in this position for
0.5 seconds until the corresponding LED
lights up or the word “All Weather”
appears on the display.
Deactivation
Mover the lever 1 fig. 33 to the "Natural"
position;

9)"VELOCE" VERSION: Considering the high
levels of vehicle performance, it is
recommended to not use the "Dynamic"
mode when driving the first kilometres with
the vehicle in order to provide the
mechanical components with the necessary
running-in period.
VERSION WITH LPGSYSTEM
19) 21)10) 11) 12) 13) 14) 16)
INTRODUCTION
The LPG version features two fuel supply
systems: one for petrol and one for LPG.
PASSIVE SAFETY/ACTIVE SAFETY
Although the LPG system has numerous
safety features, it is advisable to proceed
as follows every time the vehicle is not in
use for a long period or moved in an
emergency as a result of a breakdown or
accident:
unscrew the fixing devices 1 fig. 34,
then remove the cover 2;
Close the LPG cock rotating the ring 1
fig. 35clockwise.
refit the cover and retighten the
fastening devices.
LPG TANK
The car has a (pressurised) tank A for
storing LPG in a liquid state. It is toroidal
and is located in the spare wheel
compartment with suitable protection.
LPG tank certification
The LPG tank is certified in accordance
with the regulations in force.
In Italy, the tank has a life of 10 years
starting from the car registration date. If
the vehicle has been registered in a
country other than Italy, the duration and
the testing/inspection procedures of the
LPG tank can vary depending on the
national provisions in force in that
country. In any case, when the time limit
in the individual country has run out, go to
an Alfa Romeo Dealership to have the
tank replaced.

LPG/PETROL SWITCH
20)
15)
This engine normally runs on LPG except
during starting when it runs on petrol.
Switching to LPG takes place
automatically and is indicated by the
switching-off of icon
on the display,
next to the letters LPG.
To switch to the other fuel type, press the
button
with the car stationary and
engine on, or while driving.
If the LPG runs out during LPG operation,
the system automatically switches over
to running on petrol.
The four bars near the letters LPG in the
display indicate the level of LPG in the
tank.
REFUELLING
LPG
Maximum refuelling capacity (including
reserve): 38 litres. The figure already
takes into account the 80% tank filling
limit and the residual fluid required for
priming; this figure represents the
maximum permitted capacity. In addition,
after different refuelling processes, this
figure may vary due to differences
between the network pump supply
pressures, pumps having differentsupply/locking features, tank not
completely run out of fuel.
IMPORTANT In order to avoid
inconsistent information by the LPG
gauge on the instrument panel, it is
recommended to refill with at least
10 litres each time.
WARNING
19)Note that in some countries (including
Italy) there are legal restrictions in force for
parking/garaging motor vehicles fuelled by
gas that is denser than air; LPG comes under
this category.
20)Do not switch between the two
operating modes whilst starting the engine.
21)If gas is smelt, switch from LPG
operation to petrol operation and
immediately go to an Alfa Romeo Dealership
to have the vehicle checked and possible
system faults excluded.
IMPORTANT
10)The car is equipped with a specifically
designed gaseous LPG injection system: it is
therefore absolutely forbidden to alter the
configuration of the system or its
components. The use of other components or
materials could cause malfunctions and lead
to a reduction in safety; therefore, in the
case of problems, contact an Alfa Romeo
Dealership. When towing or lifting the
vehicle, follow the instructions in the main
handbook under the paragraph on "Towing
the vehicle" to prevent damage to the gas
system parts.
11)The system operates at temperatures
ranging between -20°C and 100°C.
12)When using a painting oven, the LPG
tank should be removed from the car and
later carefully refitted at an Alfa Romeo
Dealership. Although the LPG system has
numerous safety features, it is advisable to
proceed as follows every time the vehicle is
not in use for a long period or moved in an
emergency as a result of a breakdown or
accident: unscrew the devices fastening the
cover of the LPG tank, then remove it. Close
the LPG cock rotating the ring nut clockwise
(see "Passive safety / active safety"). Refit
the cover and retighten the fastening
devices.
34
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR
13)Only use LPG for motor vehicles.
14)It is strictly forbidden to use any additive
in the LPG. Periodically (at least once every
six months) it is advisable to let the LPG in
the tank run out and, at the first refuelling, to
check that it does not exceed the maximum
capacity of 38 litres (reserve included) (with
a tolerance of 2 litres excess). If the level is
above 38 litres (reserve included) contact an
Alfa Romeo Dealership immediately.
15)When switching is requested, metallic
noise from the valves which pressurise the
circuit can be heard. For the switching logic
described above, a delay between the valve
ticking and the switching off of the
instrument panel indication is completely
normal.
16)In particular usage conditions, such as
starting and operation at low ambient
temperature or LPG supply with low propane
content, the system may switch temporarily
to petrol operation, without a visual
indication of switching on the instrument
panel. In the event of low LPG levels in the
tank or request for high performance (e.g.
overtaking, car fully laden, steep hills) the
system may automatically switch to petrol
operation to guarantee the engine power
requested; the green warning light on the
instrument panel switches on to indicate this.
When the above conditions are no longer
present, the system automatically restores
LPG operation; the green warning light
switches off. To achieve the automatic
switching described above, make sure that
there is always enough fuel in the petrol tank.
