4.The charging cable's coupler will lock ontothe charging socket and charging will beginwithin approx. 10 seconds. The approximateremaining charging time and charging statuswill be displayed in the instrument panel. Seealso the article "Hybrid battery charge sta-tus."
Charging will be temporarily interrupted if thevehicle is unlocked:
•If a door is opened, charging will restartwithin 2 minutes.
•if no door is opened, the vehicle will auto-matically relock and charging will restartafter 1 minute.
NOTE
Charging status is shown in the instrumentpanel, which goes dark after a period of time.Reactivate the instrument panel by:
•pressing the brake pedal
•opening one of the doors
•putting the ignition in mode I (withoutpressing the brake pedal, turn the startknob to START and release it).
CAUTION
Never disconnect the charging cable from the120-/240-volt socket while charging is inprogress. This could damage the socket.
Always stop the charging process (by unlock-ing the vehicle) and disconnect the chargingcable from the vehicle's charging socketbefore disconnecting the other end from the120-/240-volt socket being used.
During the charging process, condensation mayform under the vehicle, which is normal and iscaused by cooling the hybrid battery.

Charging the hybrid battery
In addition to the conventional fuel tank, theXC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid is alsoequipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion hybridbattery.
The hybrid battery is recharged using a chargingcable located in a storage compartment underthe floor of the cargo area. See also the article"Charging cable."
WARNING
The hybrid electrical system in your vehicleuses high voltage electrical current. Any dam-age to this system or to the hybrid batterymay result in the danger of overheating, fire,or serious injury. If the vehicle is involved in acollision or is subjected to flooding, fires, etc.,have it inspected by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician. Prior to this inspec-tion, the vehicle should be parked outdoors ata safe distance from any building or poten-tially flammable materials.
The hybrid battery's charging time depends onthe charging current used.

Selecting a drive mode
1.Press the DRIVE MODE control in the tun-nel console.
>A pop-up menu will open in the centerdisplay.
2. Roll the control upward or downward to scrollto the desired drive mode.
A drive mode can also be selected by tap-ping its button on the center display.
3. Press the control again to select it.
When a driving mode cannot be selected, one ofthe following messages may be displayed:
•Not possible to select due to gear inmanual
•Not possible to select due to low battery
•Not possible to select due to lowtemperature
•Not possible to select due to limitations
•Not possible to select due to highspeed.
Available drive modes
HYBRID
This is the default mode.
The vehicle normally starts in Hybrid mode 4. Theengine management system uses both the elec-tric motor and gasoline engine (separately or intandem) and calculates the optimal levels of per-formance, fuel consumption and comfort. Athigher speeds, ground clearance is reducedautomatically to help reduce wind resistance.
The amount of driving done using only the elec-tric motor in Hybrid mode is determined by thehybrid battery's charge level and the need forheating/cooling in the passenger compartment.
If sufficient electrical energy is available, only theelectric motor will be activated when the driverpresses the accelerator pedal up to a certainlevel. Above this level, the gasoline engine willstart.
The instrument panel gauge when both the electricmotor and gasoline engine are being used
The long needle in the gauge indicates theamount of energy that the vehicle is currentlyusing. The short white line between the "light-ning" and "oil drop" symbols indicates theamount of energy available. The gasoline engine starts when the responserequired when the driver presses the acceleratorpedal cannot be provided by the electric motoralone.
The gauge also indicates when the battery isbeing recharged (regenerated) during light brak-ing. See the article "Brakes" for additional infor-mation.

NOTE
If the start battery is completely dischargedand the vehicle has no normal electrical func-tions, and the engine is then started using anauxiliary battery or battery charger, theStart/Stop function will be activated. Theengine can then be auto-stopped but may notauto-start again due to an insufficient chargelevel in the start battery.
To help ensure auto-start, the start batteryshould be charged first. At a temperature ofapprox. 60 °F (15 °C), the battery should becharged for at least 1 hour, preferably usingan external battery charger. At lower tempera-tures, the battery should be charged for3–4 hours.
If a charger is not available, it is advisable todisable the Start/Stop function until the bat-tery is sufficiently recharged.

Hybrid battery
The vehicle's electric motor is powered by arechargeable, maintenance-free, lithium-ionhybrid battery.
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is completely discharged.
WARNING
The vehicle's hybrid battery may only be serv-iced or replaced by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
Battery coolant
The hybrid battery's cooling system has its ownexpansion tank.
Filling the hybrid battery's cooling system shouldonly be done by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.

Engine compartment overview
The engine compartment overview shows somemaintenance points.
Some of the components in the vehicle's electri-cal drive system are located in the engine com-partment.
WARNING
•Orange cables should only be handled bya trained and qualified Volvo service tech-nician.
•A number of the vehicle's componentsuse high voltage and can be very danger-ous if handled improperly.
•Do not touch any components that havenot been clearly described/explained inthis manual.
•Use caution when checking/refilling flu-ids in the engine compartment.
•The cooling fan (located at the front ofthe engine compartment, behind the radi-ator) may start or continue to operate (forup to 6 minutes) after the engine hasbeen switched off.
•Engine cleaning should only be done by aworkshop. If engine cleaning agents areused when the engine has been running,there may a fire risk.
•Before performing any operations in theengine compartment, the ignition shouldalways be completely switched off (inmode 0) and there should be no remotekeys in the passenger compartment. Thegear selector should be in the P (park)position. If the engine has been running,wait until it has cooled before touchingany components in the engine compart-ment.
•The distributor ignition system operatesat very high voltages. Special safety pre-

Refilling coolant
Coolant helps keep the gasoline engine at theproper operating temperature. The heat transfer-red from the engine to the coolant can be usedto warm the passenger compartment.
When refilling coolant, follow the instructions onthe package and use the recommended amountof coolant. Never fill the cooling system withwater only; this could lead to freezing, corrosionand engine damage.
WARNING
If the engine has been running, the coolantwill be very hot. Allow the engine to coolbefore opening the coolant expansion tank. Ifthis is not possible, open the cap very slowlyto allow pressure to dissipate.
Coolant expansion tank
Lift the rubber strip by pressing it inward inthe engine compartment.
Remove the plastic cover by folding out thecatch and lifting the cover upward.
Unscrew the expansion tank cap and addcoolant. The level should be between theMIN and MAX marks on the tank.
Put the other components back in place in thereverse order.
CAUTION
•High levels of chlorine, chlorides andother salts may cause corrosion in thecooling system.
•Only use coolants with corrosion protec-tion recommended by Volvo.
•The ratio of coolant to water is 50/50.
•Mix the coolant with tap water of drinka-ble quality.
•If maintenance is performed on the cool-ing system or if the coolant is replaced,flush the cooling system with clean waterbefore adding new a new coolant/watermixture.
•The engine may only be operated with aproperly filled cooling system. Otherwise,high temperatures and cracks in the cyl-inders may occur.
