Climate – general information
The vehicle is equipped with Electronic Climate
Control (ECC) (p. 130) that cools, heats ordehumidifies the air in the passenger compart-ment.
Air conditioning
NOTE
• The air conditioning can be switched off, but to ensure the best possible climatecomfort in the passenger compartmentand to prevent the windows from misting,it should always be on.
• In warm weather, a small amount of watermay accumulate under the car when ithas been parked. This water is condensa-tion from the A/C system and is normal.
Side windows and laminated panoramic roof
To ensure that the air conditioning works opti- mally, the side windows, and the laminated panor-amic roof should be closed.
Fog on the inside of the windowsThe defroster function (p. 133) should be usedto remove fog or mist from the inside of the win-dows. Keeping the windows clean with a com-mercially available window washing spray will alsohelp prevent fogging or misting.
Temporary shut-off of the air conditioning
The air conditioning (p. 133) is momentarily dis- engaged during full acceleration or when drivinguphill with a trailer. This may result in a temporaryincrease in cabin temperature.
Ice and snowAlways keep the air intake grille at the base ofthe windshield free of snow.
Climate system maintenanceSpecial tools and equipment are required tomaintain and carry out repairs on the climate sys-tem. Work of this type should only be done by atrained and qualified Volvo service technician.
RefrigerantVolvo cares about the environment. The air condi-tioning system in your car contains a CFC-freerefrigerant – R134a. This substance will notdeplete the ozone layer. The air conditioning sys-tem contains 1.76 lbs (800 g) of R134a. Thesystems uses PAG oil.

Climate – sensors
The climate system utilizes a number of sensors to help regulate the temperature and humiditylevel in the passenger compartment.
Sensor location
• The sunlight sensor is located on the top side of the dashboard.
NOTE
The sunlight sensor monitors which side of the car that is most exposed to sunlight. Thiscan mean that the temperature may differbetween the right and left-side air vents, evenif the temperatures set for both sides of thepassenger compartment are the same.

The temperature sensor for the passenger compartment is located below the climatecontrol panel.
• The outside (ambient) temperature sensor islocated on the door mirror.
• The humidity sensor
* is located in the interior
rearview mirror.
NOTE
Do not cover or block the sensors with cloth- ing or other objects.

Driving in cold weather
Check your vehicle before the approach of cold weather.
The following advice is worth noting:
• Make sure that the engine coolant (p. 331) contains 50 percent antifreeze. Any othermixture will reduce freeze protection. Thisgives protection against freezing down to–31 °F (–35 °C). The use of "recycled" anti-freeze is not approved by Volvo. Differenttypes of antifreeze must not be mixed.
• Volvo recommends using only genuine Volvoantifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
• Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensationin the tank. In addition, in extremely coldweather conditions it is worthwhile to addfuel line de-icer before refueling.
• The viscosity of the engine oil is important.Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting as well as decreasingfuel consumption while the engine is warm-ing up. Full synthetic 0W-30 oil is recom-mended for driving in areas with sustainedlow temperatures.
• The load placed on the battery is greater dur-ing the winter since the windshield wipers,lighting, etc., are used more often. Moreover,the capacity of the battery decreases as thetemperature drops. In very cold weather, apoorly charged battery can freeze and be damaged. It is therefore advisable to checkthe state of charge more frequently andspray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
• Volvo recommends the use of snow tires onall four wheels for winter driving, see Snowtires/studded tires (p. 303).
• To prevent the washer fluid (p. 344)reservoirfrom freezing, add washer solvents contain-ing antifreeze. This is important since dirt isoften splashed on the windshield during win-ter driving, requiring the frequent use of thewashers and wipers. Volvo Washer Solventshould be diluted as follows: Down to 14 °F(–10 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 4 partswater Down to 5 °F (–15 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 3 parts water Down to 0 °F(–18 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 2 partswater Down to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 partwasher solvent and 1 part water.
• Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
• Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.
Refueling – fuel requirements
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gaso- line to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (detergent
additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injec- tors and intake valves clean. Consistent use ofdeposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of exter- nal fuel injector cleaning systems.
Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleaded gasoline. U.S. andCanadian regulations require that pumps deliver-ing unleaded gasoline be labeled "UNLEADED".Only these pumps have nozzles which fit yourvehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful to dispense lea-ded fuel into a vehicle labeled "unleaded gaso-line only". Leaded gasoline damages the three-way catalytic converter and the heated oxygensensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasolinewill lessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system (p. 277) and could result in loss ofemission warranty coverage. State and local vehi-

Engine compartment – engine oil
The correct oil must be used for the stated oil change (service) intervals to apply. The oil level on 4-cylinder engines is checked electronically and is checked using a dipstick on5- and 6-cylinder engines.
Checking the engine oil (5- and 6-
cylinder engines)
The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service.
• See Oil specifications (p. 375) for oil specifi-cations.
• Also, refer to the Warranty and ServiceRecords information booklet for informationon oil change intervals and oil specifications.
CAUTION
•
Not checking the oil level regularly can result in serious engine damage if the oillevel becomes too low.
• Oil that is lower than the specified qualitycan damage the engine.
• Volvo does not recommend the use of oiladditives.
• Always add oil of the same type and vis-cosity as already used.
• Never fill oil above the
MAX mark. This
could cause an increase in oil consump-tion.
• Oil changes should be carried out by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.

• The car should be parked on a level sur- face.
• If the engine is warm

CAUTION
•If necessary, top up the cooling system with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreezeonly (a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze).
• Different types of antifreeze/coolant maynot be mixed.
• If the cooling system is drained, it shouldbe flushed with clean water or premixedanti-freeze before it is refilled with thecorrect mixture of water/anti-freeze.
• The cooling system must always be keptfilled to the correct level, and the level must be between the
MIN and MAX
marks. If it is not kept filled, there can be high local temperatures in the enginewhich could result in damage. Checkcoolant regularly!
• Do not top up with water only. Thisreduces the rust-protective and anti-freeze qualities of the coolant and has alower boiling point. It can also causedamage to the cooling system if it shouldfreeze.
• Do not use chlorinated tap water in thevehicle's cooling system.
WARNING
•
Never remove the expansion tank cap while the engine is warm. Wait until theengine cools.
• If it is necessary to top off the coolantwhen the engine is warm, unscrew theexpansion tank cap slowly so that theoverpressure dissipates.
Engine compartment – brake fluid
The brake fluid should always be between the MIN and MAX marks on the inside of the reser-
voir.

Checking the level
The fluid reservoir is concealed under the round cover at the rear of the engine compartment. Theround cover must be removed first before thereservoir cap can be accessed. The brake fluid should always be between the MIN and MAX marks on the inside of the reser-
voir. Check, without removing the cap, that there is sufficient fluid in the reservoir. Fluid type : DOT 4 boiling point >536 °F
(280 °C), P/N 9437433Replace : The fluid should be replaced according
to the intervals specified in the Warranty and Service Records Information booklet. When driving under extremely hard conditions (mountain driving, etc), it may be necessary toreplace the fluid more often. Consult a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician. Always entrust brake fluid changing to a trained and qualified Volvo service technician.WARNING
• If the fluid level is below the
MIN mark in
the reservoir or if a brake-related mes- sage is shown in the information display: DO NOT DRIVE . Have the car towed to a
trained and qualified Volvo service techni- cian and have the brake system inspec-ted.
• Dot 4 should never be mixed with anyother type of brake fluid.
Filling
1. Turn and open the cover.
2. Unscrew the reservoir cap and fill the fluid.
The level must be between the MIN and
MAX marks.
Engine compartment – power steering fluid
The fluid level must be between the MIN and
MAX marks. For capacities and recommended
fluid grade, see Fuel tank volume – specification and volume (p. 378).
Check the level frequently. It does not normally require changing.
WARNING
If a problem should occur in the power steer- ing system or if the vehicle has no electricalcurrent and must be towed, it is still possibleto steer the vehicle. However, keep in mindthat greater effort will be required to turn thesteering wheel.

Leather care
Volvo's leather upholstery is manufactured with a protectant to repel soiling. Over time, sunlight,grease and dirt can break down the protection.Staining, cracking, scuffing, and fading can result. Volvo offers an easy-to-use, non-greasy leather care kit formulated to clean and beautify yourvehicle's leather, and to renew the protectivequalities of its finish. The cleaner removes dirtand oil buildup. The light cream protectantrestores a barrier against soil and sunlight. Volvo also offers a special leather softener that should be applied after the cleaner and protec-tant. It leaves leather soft and smooth, andreduces friction between leather and other fin-ishes in the vehicle. Volvo recommends cleaning, protecting and con- ditioning your vehicle's leather two to four times ayear. Ask your Volvo retailer about Leather CareKit 951 0251 and Leather Softener 943 7429.
Cleaning leather upholstery
1. Pour leather cleaner on a damp sponge andsqueeze it until the cleaner foams.
2. Apply the foam to the stain by moving the sponge with circular movements.
3. Dampen the stain thoroughly with the sponge. Let the sponge absorb the stain, do not rub.
4. Dry the stain with soft paper towels or a towel, and allow the leather to dry completely.
Protecting leather upholstery
1. Put a small amount of protectant cream on acloth and apply a thin coating of cream to the upholstery with light circular movements.
2. Allow the leather to dry for 20 minutes. This will help the leather resist staining and pro- tect against sunlight's harmful UV rays.
CAUTION
• Under no circumstances should gasoline, naphtha or similar cleaning agents beused on the plastic or the leather sincethese can cause damage.
• Take extra care when removing stainssuch as ink or lipstick since the coloringcan spread.
• Use solvents sparingly. Too much solventcan damage the seat padding.
• Start from the outside of the stain andwork toward the center.
• Sharp objects (e.g. pencils or pens in apocket) or Velcro fasteners on clothingmay damage the textile upholstery.
• Clothing that is not colorfast, such asnew jeans or suede garments, may stainthe upholstery.
Cleaning a leather-covered steering wheel
• Remove soil, dust, etc., with a damp sponge and a neutral soap solution.
• Leather should be allowed to breath. Nevercover the steering wheel with a plastic pro-tector.
• Volvo recommends cleaning, protecting andconditioning the steering wheel with Volvo'sLeather Care Kit 951 0251 and LeatherSoftener 943 7429.
If there are stains on the steering wheel: Type 1 (ink, wine, coffee, milk, sweat or blood)
–Use a soft cloth or sponge. Wipe the wheel with a solution with 5% ammonia. For bloodstains, mix approx. 1 cup (2 dl) of water andone ounce (25g) of salt and wipe the stain.
Type 2 (fat, oil, sauces, or chocolate)
1. Same procedure as for type I stains.
2. Finish by rubbing the wheel with absorbent paper or a towel.
Type 3 (dry soil or dust)
1. Remove the soil/dust with a soft brush.
2. Same procedure as for type I stains.
CAUTION
Sharp objects, such as rings, could damage the leather on the steering wheel.

Oil specifications
Full synthetic engine oil meeting the minimum
ACEA A5/B5 must be used. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engineperformance, or engine protection.

NOTE
This vehicle comes from the factory with syn- thetic oil.
Oil additives must not be used.
Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will provide goodfuel economy and engine protection. See the vis-cosity chart.

Extreme engine operation
SAE 0W-30 oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 require- ments is recommended for extreme driving con-ditions.
CAUTION
4-cylinder engines only: Volvo oil VCC
RBS0-2AE/SAE 0W20 is recommended for extreme driving conditions. This oil must never be used in 5- or 6-cylin-
der engines.
