Important warnings
Please keep the following warnings in mind when operating/servicing your vehicle.
Driver distractionA driver has a responsibility to do everything pos- sible to ensure his or her own safety and thesafety of passengers in the vehicle and otherssharing the roadway. Avoiding distractions is partof that responsibility. Driver distraction results from driver activities that are not directly related to controlling the vehiclein the driving environment. Your new Volvo is, orcan be, equipped with many feature-rich enter-tainment and communication systems. Theseinclude hands-free cellular telephones, navigationsystems, and multipurpose audio systems. Youmay also own other portable electronic devicesfor your own convenience. When used properlyand safely, they enrich the driving experience.Improperly used, any of these could cause a dis-traction. For all of these systems, we want to provide the following warning that reflects the strong Volvoconcern for your safety. Never use these devicesor any feature of your vehicle in a way that dis-tracts you from the task of driving safely. Distrac-tion can lead to a serious accident. In addition tothis general warning, we offer the following guid-ance regarding specific newer features that maybe found in your vehicle:
WARNING
• Never use a hand-held cellular telephone while driving. Some jurisdictions prohibitcellular telephone use by a driver whilethe vehicle is moving.
• If your vehicle is equipped with a naviga-tion system, set and make changes toyour travel itinerary only with the vehicleparked.
• Never program your audio system whilethe vehicle is moving. Program radio pre-sets with the vehicle parked, and use yourprogrammed presets to make radio usequicker and simpler.
• Never use portable computers or per-sonal digital assistants while the vehicleis moving.
Accessory installation
•We strongly recommend that Volvo owners install only genuine, Volvo-approved acces-sories, and that accessory installations beperformed only by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
• Genuine Volvo accessories are tested toensure compatibility with the performance,safety, and emission systems in your vehicle.Additionally, a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician knows where accessoriesmay and may not be safely installed in yourVolvo. In all cases, please consult a trained and qualified Volvo service technician beforeinstalling any accessory in or on your vehicle.
• Accessories that have not been approved byVolvo may or may not be specifically testedfor compatibility with your vehicle. Addition-ally, an inexperienced installer may not befamiliar with some of your car's systems.
• Any of your car's performance and safetysystems could be adversely affected if youinstall accessories that Volvo has not tested,or if you allow accessories to be installed bysomeone unfamiliar with your vehicle.
• Damage caused by unapproved or improperlyinstalled accessories may not be covered byyour new vehicle warranty. See your Warrantyand Service Records Information booklet formore warranty information. Volvo assumes noresponsibility for death, injury, or expensesthat may result from the installation of non-genuine accessories.

Ignition modes
The vehicle's ignition has 3 modes: 0, I, and II
that can be used without starting the engine. The following table shows examples of whichfunctions are available in the respective modes.
NOTE
To access ignition modes I or II without star-
ting the engine, the brake pedal must not be
depressed.
ModeFunction
0The odometer, clock and temperature gauge are illuminated. Power seats *
can be adjusted and the infotainment system can be used for a limited time(to minimize battery drain, see theSensus Infotainment Supplement).
IThe laminated panoramic roof, power windows,12-volt sockets in the pas-senger compartment, navigation sys- tem *, climate system blower, wind-
shield wipers can be used.
IIThe headlights/taillights illuminate. Warning/indicator lights illuminate for5 seconds. Other systems are acti- vated. However, the heated seats * and
heated rear window function can only be activated when the engine is run- ning. Mode II should only be used
for very short periods to help avoid draining the battery.
Ignition modes
Ignition mode 0
–The vehicle is unlocked.

Trip computer – Supplementary information
General information for both Analog and Digital trip computer functions.
Average fuel consumptionFuel consumption since the last time this func- tion was reset.
Average speedThe vehicle's average speed since the last timethis function was reset.
Current fuel consumptionCurrent fuel consumption is calculated approxi-mately once a second. When the vehicle is mov-ing at low speed, fuel consumption is displayedper unit of time. At higher speeds, it is displayedin terms of distance. Miles or kilometers can be displayed, see the heading "Changing units".
Distance to emptyThis function shows the approximate distancethat can be driven on the fuel remaining in the tank. When

there is very little useable fuel remaining in that tank; refuel as soon as possible. The calculationis based on average fuel consumption during thelast 20 miles (30 km) of driving and the amountof fuel remaining in the tank (the accuracy of thisfigure may vary if your driving style changes). An economical driving style will generally increasethis distance. See Economical driving (p. 278) for information about driving economically.
Digital speed display
*Speed is expressed in the unit not used by theinstrument panel's speedometer e.g., if the nor-mal speedometer is in mph, the trip computer willdisplay in the speed in km/h and vice versa.
Resetting an analog instrument panel
Trip odometer(s) and average speed
1. Display trip odometer T1 or T1, or Average
speed.
2. Press and hold RESET until selected func-
tion is reset.
Each trip computer heading must be reset indi- vidually.
Resetting a digital instrument panel
Trip odometer
1. Turn the thumb wheel to select the combi-
nation of headings containing the trip odom- eter to be reset.
2. Press and hold RESET until selected trip
odometer is reset.
Average speed and fuel consumption
1. Select Trip computer reset and press OK. 2. Select one of the following alternatives using
the thumb wheel and press OK:
• mpg
• mph
• Reset both
3. Finish by pressing RESET.
Changing unitsTo change the unit (miles/km) used to measure distance and speed, go to
MY CARSettings
System optionsDistance and fuel units.
NOTE
In addition to changing units in the trip com- puter, this also changes the units used in the Volvo Navigation System (VNS) *.

Road Sign Information (RSI) – operation
Speed limit information
When RSI registers a road sign showing the speed limit, this sign is displayed as a symbol onthe instrument panel.

Speed alert
The driver can opt to be alerted if the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than3 mph (5 km/h). The alert is given when the sym-bol with the posted speed limit in the instrumentpanel begins to flash. To activate speed alert:

Sensus NavigationIf the vehicle is equipped with Sensus Navigation, speed-related information is gathered from thissystem if: •The speed limit previously detected by RSI is no longer considered valid and no new speedlimit sign has been detected.

Conserving electrical current
Keep the following in mind to help minimize bat- tery drain:
• When the engine is not running, avoid using ignition mode
II. Many electrical systems (the
audio system, the optional navigation system, power windows, etc) will function in ignition modes 0 and I. These modes reduce drain
on the battery.
• Please keep in mind that using systems, accessories, etc., that consume a great dealof current when the engine is not runningcould result in the battery being completelydrained. Driving or having the engine runningfor approximately 15 minutes will help keepthe battery charged.
• The optional 12-volt socket in the cargoarea (p. 143) area provides electrical currenteven with the ignition switched off, whichdrains the battery.
Before a long distance trip
It is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician before driving long distances. Yourretailer will also be able to supply you with bulbs,fuses, spark plugs and wiper blades for your usein the event that problems occur.
As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:
• Check that engine runs smoothly and thatfuel consumption is normal.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage.
• Have the transmission oil level checked.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully (the spare tire aswell), and replace those that areworn (p. 290). Check tire pressure (p. 297).
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steer-ing gear should be checked by a trained andqualified Volvo service technician only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drivein countries where it may be difficult toobtain the correct fuel. •
Consider your destination. If you will be driv-ing through an area where snow or ice arelikely to occur, consider snow tires (p. 303).
