Important warnings
Please keep the following warnings in mind when operating/servicing your vehicle.
Driver distractionA driver has a responsibility to do everything pos- sible to ensure his or her own safety and thesafety of passengers in the vehicle and otherssharing the roadway. Avoiding distractions is partof that responsibility. Driver distraction results from driver activities that are not directly related to controlling the vehiclein the driving environment. Your new Volvo is, orcan be, equipped with many feature-rich enter-tainment and communication systems. Theseinclude hands-free cellular telephones, navigationsystems, and multipurpose audio systems. Youmay also own other portable electronic devicesfor your own convenience. When used properlyand safely, they enrich the driving experience.Improperly used, any of these could cause a dis-traction. For all of these systems, we want to provide the following warning that reflects the strong Volvoconcern for your safety. Never use these devicesor any feature of your vehicle in a way that dis-tracts you from the task of driving safely. Distrac-tion can lead to a serious accident. In addition tothis general warning, we offer the following guid-ance regarding specific newer features that maybe found in your vehicle:
WARNING
• Never use a hand-held cellular telephone while driving. Some jurisdictions prohibitcellular telephone use by a driver whilethe vehicle is moving.
• If your vehicle is equipped with a naviga-tion system, set and make changes toyour travel itinerary only with the vehicleparked.
• Never program your audio system whilethe vehicle is moving. Program radio pre-sets with the vehicle parked, and use yourprogrammed presets to make radio usequicker and simpler.
• Never use portable computers or per-sonal digital assistants while the vehicleis moving.
Accessory installation
•We strongly recommend that Volvo owners install only genuine, Volvo-approved acces-sories, and that accessory installations beperformed only by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
• Genuine Volvo accessories are tested toensure compatibility with the performance,safety, and emission systems in your vehicle.Additionally, a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician knows where accessoriesmay and may not be safely installed in yourVolvo. In all cases, please consult a trained and qualified Volvo service technician beforeinstalling any accessory in or on your vehicle.
• Accessories that have not been approved byVolvo may or may not be specifically testedfor compatibility with your vehicle. Addition-ally, an inexperienced installer may not befamiliar with some of your car's systems.
• Any of your car's performance and safetysystems could be adversely affected if youinstall accessories that Volvo has not tested,or if you allow accessories to be installed bysomeone unfamiliar with your vehicle.
• Damage caused by unapproved or improperlyinstalled accessories may not be covered byyour new vehicle warranty. See your Warrantyand Service Records Information booklet formore warranty information. Volvo assumes noresponsibility for death, injury, or expensesthat may result from the installation of non-genuine accessories.

Digital compass*
The rear-view mirror has an integrated display that shows the compass direction in which thevehicle is traveling.
Operation

Eight different directions are shown with the abbreviations: N (north), NE (north east), E (east),SE (southeast), S (south), SW (southwest), W(west) and NW (northwest).
The compass is displayed automatically when the vehicle is started or in ignition mode II. To switch
the compass on/off use a pen, paperclip or simi- lar object and press in the button on the under-side of the mirror.
CalibrationNorth America is divided into 15 magnetic zonesand the compass will need to be calibrated if thevehicle is driven into a new one (see the mag-netic zones on the map in the following section"Selecting a magnetic zone"). To do so:
1. Stop the vehicle in a large open area, safely out of traffic and away from steel structures and high-tension electrical wires.
2. Start the vehicle.
NOTE
• For best calibration results, switch off all electrical equipment in the vehicle (climatesystem, windshield wipers, audio system,etc.) and make sure that all doors areclosed.
• Calibration may not succeed or be incor-rect if the vehicle's electrical equipment isnot switched off.
3. Using a pen, paperclip or similar object, press
and hold the button on the underside of mir- ror for approx. 6 seconds until
C is displayed
in the mirror.
4. Press and hold the button for 3 seconds until the number of the current magnetic zone is displayed. 5. Press the button repeatedly until the number
of the desired magnetic zone (
1-15) is dis-
played. See the magnetic zones on the map in the following section "Selecting a mag-netic zone").
6. Wait until
C is again displayed in the mirror.
7. Drive slowly in a circle at a speed of no more than 6 mph (10 km/h) until a direction is dis- played. This indicates that calibration is com-plete.
8. Drive around in a circle an additional two times to fine-tune the calibration.
9. Vehicles with an electrically heated wind- shield: * if
C is displayed when the heating
function is activated, perform step 7 with the heating function on. See also Max. defroster and electrically heated windshield * (p. 133)
for additional information about the heated windshield.
Repeat the calibration procedure if necessary.

Information display – messagesThe controls on the left steering wheel lever are used to scroll among messages displayed in theinstrument panel and to confirm selections. When information, indicator or warning symbols illuminate, an explanatory message will be dis-played in the instrument panel.
When a warning (p. 75), information (p. 73) or indicator symbol (p. 73) comes on, a correspond-ing message appears in the information panel. Anerror message is stored in a memory list until thefault is rectified. Press OK to acknowledge and scroll among the
messages.
NOTE
If a warning message appears while you are using the trip computer, the message must be read and confirmed by pressing OK before
the previous activity can be resumed.

Collision WarningThe radar sensor and the camera work together to detect a pedestrian, a cyclist, stationary vehi-cles and vehicles that are moving in the samedirection as your vehicle. If there is a risk of colli-sion with a vehicle, a cyclist or a pedestrian, thedriver is alerted by a flashing red warning lightand an audible warning signal. The system isactive at speeds above 3 mph (4 km/h).
Brake SupportIf the risk of collision continues to increase afterthe collision warning has been given, Brake Sup-port is activated. Brake Support prepares thebrake system to react quickly, and the brakes areapplied slightly. This may be experienced as alight tug. If the brakes are applied quickly, full braking effect will be provided. Brake Support alsoincreases brake force if the system determinesthat the driver has not applied adequate pressureon the brake pedal.
Auto-brakeIf a collision is imminent and the driver has notapplied the brakes or begun to steer around thevehicle, pedestrian or a cyclist, the auto-brakefunction is activated without the driver pressingthe brake pedal. Full brake force is applied tohelp reduce the vehicle

Park assist – introduction
The park assist system is designed to assist you when driving into parking spaces, garages, etc.An audible signal and symbols in the audio sys-tem

Audible signal
The Park Assist system uses an intermittent tone that pulses faster as you come close to an object,and becomes constant when you are withinapproximately 1 ft (30 cm) of an object in front ofor behind the vehicle. If there are objects withinthis distance both behind and in front of the vehi-cle, the tone alternates between front and rearspeakers.
NOTE
The level of the audible signal can be low- ered/raised with the infotainment volumecontrol. The level can also be set in the MYCAR menu system. See My Car – introduction(p. 77) for a description of the menu system.
If the volume of another source from the audio system is high, this will be automatically lowered.
Rear park assist
The distance monitored behind the vehicle is approximately 5 ft (1.5 m). The audible signalcomes from the rear speakers. The system must be deactivated when towing a trailer, carrying bicycles in a rear-mounted carrier,etc, which could trigger the rear park assist sys-tem's sensors.
NOTE
•Rear park assist is deactivated automati- cally when towing a trailer if Volvo genu-ine trailer wiring is used. If a non-Volvotrailer hitch is being used, it may be nec-essary to switch off the system manually,see Park assist – operation (p. 235).
• The system will not detect high objects,such as a loading dock, etc.
• Objects such as chains, thin shiny polesor low objects may temporarily not bedetected by the system. This may resultin the pulsing tone unexpectedly stoppinginstead of changing to a constant tone asthe vehicle approaches the object. Insuch cases, use caution when backing upor stop the vehicle to help avoid damage.

Front park assist
The distance monitored in front of the vehicle is approximately 2.5 ft (0.8 m). The audible signalcomes from the audio system's front speakers. It may not be possible to combine auxiliary head- lights and front park assist since these lightscould trigger the system's sensors.
NOTE
Front park assist is deactivated when the parking brake is applied and or when the gear selector is in the P position.

The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started. The indicator light in the buttonin the center console illuminates when the sys-tem is on. • The front park assist system is active from the time the engine is started until the vehi-cle exceeds a speed of approximately 6 mph(10 km/h). It is also active when the vehicleis backing up.
• Rear park assist is active when the engine isrunning and reverse gear has been selected.

BLIS * – Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)
Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) is a supplementary BLIS 12
function intended to detect vehicles
crossing behind your vehicle while you are back- ing up.
Park assist/CTA button
On vehicles equipped with the optional Park assist system (p. 233), Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)can be deactivated/reactivated by pressing thePark assist button on the center console. TheBLIS indicator lights on the front doors will flashwhen CTA is reactivated by pressing the button.
WARNING
• BLIS and CTA are information systems, NOT warning or safety systems and donot function in all situations.
• BLIS and CTA do not eliminate the needfor you to visually confirm the conditionsaround you, and the need for you to turnyour head and shoulders to make surethat you can safely change lanes or backup.
• As the driver, you have full responsibilityfor changing lanes/backing up in a safemanner.
When does CTA function
How CTA works
CTA supplements BLIS by warning the driver of crossing traffic behind your vehicle, for example,when backing out of a parking space. It is primarily designed to detect another vehicle but in certain cases may also detect pedestriansor smaller objects such as bicycles. CTA is only activated when the vehicle is backing up and is activated automatically when the gearselector is put in reverse.
• An audible signal indicates that CTA hasdetected something that is approaching fromthe side. The signal will come from either theleft or right audio system speakers, depend-ing on which the side of your vehicle theapproaching vehicle/object has beendetected.
• CTA also provides a warning by illuminatingthe BLIS indicator lights.
• An icon will also illuminate in the Park assistgraphic on the center console display.
LimitationsCTA has limitations in certain situations, forexample, the CTA sensors cannot "see" throughother parked vehicles or obstructions. The following are several examples where CTA's "field of vision" may initially be limited andapproaching vehicles cannot be detected untilthey are too close:
