Overhead courtesy lighting
The passenger compartment lighting is switched on and off automatically when button (3) is in theneutral position. The lighting comes on and remains on for 30 seconds if:
• the vehicle is unlocked from the outside withthe key or remote control
• the engine is switched off and the ignition is in mode
0.
The lighting switches off when:
• the engine is started
• the vehicle is locked from the outside.
The lighting comes on and remains on for two minutes if one of the doors is open. The passenger compartment lighting can be switched on and off manually within 30 minutesafter the vehicle has been unlocked. If the lighting is switched on manually and the vehicle is locked, the courtesy lighting will switchoff automatically after one minute.

The courtesy lights/door step lighting switch on/off automatically when one of the front doorsis opened/closed.
Glove compartment lighting
The glove compartment lighting switches on/off automatically when the lid is opened/closed.

Home safe lighting
When you leave your vehicle at night, you can make use of the home safe lighting function toilluminate the area in front of the vehicle.
This function illuminates the headlights, parking lights, lights in the door mirrors, license platelights, front ceiling lighting and footwell lighting. These lights will remain on for 30 18
, 60 or
90 seconds. The time interval can be set in MY CAR under

1. Remove the key from the ignition slot to put
the ignition in mode 0 (see Ignition modes
(p. 80) for information about the ignition modes).
2. Pull the turn signal lever as far as possible towards the steering wheel and release it.
3. Exit the vehicle and lock the doors.

Approach lighting
Approach lighting activates the parking lights, door mirror lights, license plate lighting, domelighting and door step lighting when youapproach the vehicle.

Heated windshield *, rear window

The heating function is used to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or the rear window and doormirrors.

Press button (1) to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or button (2) to defrost the rear window anddoor mirrors. The indicator lights in the respectivebuttons indicate that the function is active. Switchthe function off when then windshield/rear win-dow/mirrors have cleared to help avoid batterydrain. The heating function will also switch offautomatically after a certain amount of time. Auto-defrosting for the rear window and door mirrors (if the vehicle is started when the ambient temperature is below 45 °F (7 °C) can be selected in MY CAR under

If the Engine Remote Start (ERS) * function is
used, the electrically heated windshield function will be activated automatically at temperaturesbelow approx. 40 °F (+5 °C) if auto-defrostinghas been selected in the MY CAR menu. See My Car – introduction (p. 77) for a descrip- tion of the menu system.

Remote key and key blade
Two remote keys are provided with your vehicle. They enable you to unlock the doors and tail-gate, and also function as ignition keys to startthe vehicle or operate electrical components.The remote keys contain detachable metal keyblades for manually locking or unlocking the driv-er's door and the glove compartment. The visibleends of these key blades are unique to make iteasier to identify "your" remote key. Up to sixremotes can be programmed for use on thesame vehicle.
WARNING
Never leave the remote key in the ignition slot if children are to remain in the vehicle.

Remote key – loss
If either of the remote keys (p. 150) is lost, the other should be taken with the vehicle to a Volvoretailer. As an anti-theft measure, the code of thelost remote key must be erased from the system.

Additional or duplicate remote control keys can be obtained from any authorized Volvoretailer. You can also obtain additional or duplicate remote control keys from certain independentrepair facilities and locksmiths that are quali-fied to make remote control keys. Each keymust be programmed to work with your vehi-cle. Activating the private locking function
Insert the key blade in the glove compart- ment lock.
Turn the key blade180 degrees clockwise.
Remove the key blade from the lock. A mes- sage will appear in the instrument panel dis-play.
Deactivating the private locking function
Turn the key blade 180 degrees counterclock- wise in the glove compartment lock to deactivateprivate locking. For information on locking the glove compart- ment normally, without activating the private lock-ing function, see Locking/unlocking the glovecompartment (p. 165).
Remote key – replacing the battery The remote key can be opened if the battery needs to be replaced.
The battery should be replaced if:

NOTE

If the vehicle is locked by pressing the button on one of the door handles or by pressing thelock button on the remote key, or if it is leftunlocked for more than 30 minutes, the keymemory function will be deactivated. To reactivate the key's memory:
• Unlock the vehicle by pulling a door han- dle with the remote key in your posses-sion or by pressing the unlock button onthe remote key.

If all of the remote keys are removed from the vehicle while the engine is running or if the igni-tion modes (p. 80) is in mode II and all of the
doors are closed, a message will appear in theinstrument panel display and an audible signalwill sound.
When at least one remote key has been returned to the car, the message will be erased in the dis-play and the audible signal will stop when:
• A door has been opened and closed
• The remote key has been inserted in theignition slot
• The
OK button has been pressed. For the
location of this button, see Information dis-play – menu controls (p. 115)
CAUTION
• Keyless drive remote keys should never be left in the vehicle. In the event of abreak-in, a remote found in the vehiclecould make it possible to start theengine.
• Electromagnetic fields or metal obstruc-tions can interfere with the keyless drivesystem. The remote key should never beplaced closer than approximately 4-6 in.(10-15 cm) to cell phones, metallicobjects or e.g., stored in a metal brief-case.

In the horizontal position, the door cannot be opened from the outside.
In the vertical position, the door can be opened from the inside and the outside.
NOTE
If the manual child safety lock (p. 63) is acti- vated for a rear side door and that door isalso locked manually, the door cannot beopened from the outside or inside. The doorcan only be unlocked with the remote key orthe central locking button.

• Each door can be locked individually with the lock button on the respective doors. The doormust be closed first.
Automatic relockingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati-cally reengage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-armafter 2 minutes unless a door or the tailgate hasbeen opened.
Automatic lockingWhen the vehicle starts to move, the doors andtailgate can be locked automatically. This feature can be turned on or off by pressing
