Warning symbols in the driver display The warning symbols alert the driver that an important function is activated or that a seriousfault or condition exists.
WARNING
If the brake fluid is below the MIN level in the
brake fluid reservoir, do not drive further before topping up the brake fluid. The loss of brake fluid must be investigated by a workshop. Volvo recommends contactingan authorised Volvo workshop.
WARNING
If the BRAKE and ABS symbols are lit at the same time, there is a risk that the rear end willskid during heavy braking.
Symbol Specification
Warning The red warning symbol illuminates when a fault has been indicatedwhich could affect the safetyand/or driveability of the car. Anexplanatory text is shown on thedriver display at the same time. Thewarning symbol can also illuminatein conjunction with other symbols.
Seatbelt reminder This symbol flashes if someone in a front seat has not put on theirseatbelt or if someone in a rearseat has taken off their seatbelt.
Airbags If the symbol remains illuminated or illuminates while driving, a fault hasbeen detected in one of the car'ssafety systems. Read the messagein the driver display. Volvo recom-mends that an authorised Volvoworkshop is contacted.
Symbol Specification
Fault in brake system If this symbol illuminates, the brake fluid level may be too low. Visit thenearest authorised workshop tohave the brake fluid level checkedand rectified.
Parking brake applied This symbol illuminates with a con- stant glow when the parking brakeis applied. A flashing symbol means that a fault has arisen. Read the messagein the driver display.
STARTING AND DRIVING
407
•
Brake now and again to remove any layer of salt. Make sure that other road users are notput at risk by the braking.
• Gently depress the brake pedal after finish-ing driving and before starting your next trip.
MaintenanceTo keep the car as safe and reliable as possible, follow the Volvo service intervals as specified inthe Service and Warranty Booklet. New and replaced brake linings and brake discs do not provide optimal braking effect until theyhave been "worn in" a few hundred kilometres.Compensate for the reduced braking effect bydepressing the brake pedal harder. Volvo recom-mends only fitting brake linings that are approvedfor your Volvo.
IMPORTANT
The wear on the brake system's components must be checked regularly. Contact a workshop for information about the procedure or engage a workshop to carry outthe inspection - an authorised Volvo work-shop is recommended.

Check the brake fluid level. If the level is low, fill with brake fluid andcheck for the cause of the brakefluid loss.
Constant glow for 2 seconds when the engine is started: Automaticfunction check. Constant glow for more than 2 seconds: Fault in the ABS system. The car's normal brake system isstill working, but without the ABSfunction.
WARNING
If both the warning lamps for brake fault and ABS fault illuminate at the same time, a faulthas occurred in the brake system.
• If the level in the brake fluid reservoir is normal at this stage, drive carefully to thenearest workshop and have the brakesystem checked - an authorised Volvoworkshop is recommended.
• If the brake fluid is below the
MIN level in
the brake fluid reservoir, do not drive fur-ther before topping up the brake fluid. The reason for the loss of brake fluidmust be investigated.

WARNING
Remember that the radiator fan (located at the front of the engine compartment, behindthe radiator) may start automatically someafter the engine has been switched off. Always have the engine cleaned by a work- shop - an authorised Volvo workshop is rec-ommended. There is a risk of fire if the engineis hot.
WARNING
The ignition system works at a very high and hazardous voltage. The car's electrical system must always be in ignition position
0 when
work is being performed in the engine com- partment. Do not touch the spark plugs or ignition coil when the car's electrical system is in ignition position II or when the engine is hot.
