CAUTION
•
Do not use bottle holder for any other objects
that could be thrown about in the vehicle and
possibly injure people during sudden braking
or an accident.
• Do not use bottle holder for open liquid con-
tainers.
ROOF RAIL (where fitted)
Always evenly distribute the cargo on the tubular roof rail. The maximum total load is 100 kg (221 lb)
evenly distributed. WARNING
• Drive extra carefully when the vehicle is
loaded at or near the cargo carrying capacity,
especially if the significant portion of that load
is carried on the roof rail. •
Heavy loading of the roof rail has the potential
to affect the vehicle stability and handling dur-
ing sudden or unusual handling manoeuvres.
• Roof rail load should be evenly distributed.
• Do not exceed maximum roof rail load weight
capacity.
• Properly secure all cargo with ropes or straps
to help prevent it from sliding or shifting. In a
sudden stop or collision, unsecured cargo
could cause personal injury.
CAUTION
Use care when placing items on or removing
items from the roof rail. If you cannot comfort-
ably lift the items onto or off the roof rail from the
ground, use aladder or stool.
CARD HOLDER (where fitted)
Slide acard in the card holder jA. 1. To block out glare from the front, swing down the
sun visor ➀.
2. To block glare from the side, remove the sun visor from the centre mount and swing it to the

Do not drive across steep slopes. Instead
drive either straight up or straight down the
slopes. Off-road vehicles can tip over side-
ways much more easily than they can forward
or backward.
• Many hills are too steep for any vehicle. If you
drive up them, you may stall. If you drive down
them, you may not be able to control your
speed. If you drive across them, you may roll
over.
• Do not shift ranges while driving on downhill
grades as this could cause loss of control of
the vehicle.
• Stay alert when driving to the top of
ahill. At
the top there could be adrop-off or other haz-
ard that could cause an accident.
• If your engine stalls or you cannot make it to
the top of
asteep hill, never attempt to turn
around. Your vehicle could tip or roll over.
Always back straight down in R(Reverse)
range. Never back down in N(Neutral) or with
the clutch pedal depressed (MT model) using
only the brake, as this could cause loss of
control.
• Heavy braking going down
ahill could cause
your brakes to overheat and fade, resulting in
loss of control and an accident. Apply brakes
lightly and use alow range to control your
speed.
• Unsecured cargo can be thrown around when
driving over rough terrain. Properly secure all cargo so it will not be thrown forward and
cause injury to you or your passengers.
• To avoid raising the centre of gravity exces-
sively, do not exceed the rated capacity of the
roof rail (where fitted) and evenly distribute
the load. Secure heavy loads in the cargo area
as far forward and as low as possible. Do not
equip the vehicle with tyres larger than speci-
fied in this manual. This could cause your ve-
hicle to roll over.
• Do not grip the inside or spokes of the steer-
ing wheel when driving off-road. The steering
wheel could move suddenly and injure your
hands. Instead drive with your fingers and
thumbs on the outside of the rim.
• Before operating the vehicle, ensure that the
driver and all passengers have their seat belts
fastened.
• Always drive with the floor mats in place as
the floor may became hot.
• Lower your speed when encountering strong
crosswinds. With
ahigher centre of gravity,
your vehicle is more affected by strong side
winds. Slower speeds ensure better vehicle
control.
• Do not drive beyond the performance capabil-
ity of the tyres, even with 4WD engaged.
• Do not attempt to raise two wheels off the
ground and shift the transmission to any drive
or reverse position with the engine running.
Doing so may result in drivetrain damage or unexpected vehicle movement which could
result in serious vehicle damage or personal
injury.
• Do not attempt to test
a4WD equipped ve-
hicle on a2-wheel dynamometer or similar
equipment even if the other two wheels are
raised off the ground. Make sure you inform
test facility personnel that your vehicle is
equipped with 4WD before it is placed on a dynamometer. Using the wrong test equip-
ment may result in drivetrain damage or unex-
pected vehicle movement which could result
in serious vehicle damage or personal injury.
• When
awheel is off the ground due to an
unlevel surface, do not spin the wheel exces-
sively.
• Accelerating quickly, sharp steering manoeu-
vres or sudden braking may cause loss of con-
trol.
• If at all possible, avoid sharp turning manoeu-
vres, particularly at high speeds. Your vehicle
has
ahigher centre of gravity than aconven-
tional passenger car. The vehicle is not de-
signed for cornering at the same speeds as
conventional passenger cars. Failure to oper- ate this vehicle correctly could result in loss
of control and/or arollover accident.
• Always use tyres of the same type, size, brand,
construction (bias, bias-belted or radial), and
tread pattern on all four wheels. Install tyre
chains on the rear wheels when driving on
slippery roads and drive carefully.
Starting and driving 5-7
NOTE
When the Stop/Start System indicator illumi-
nates, the engine starts running automatically
under at least one of the following conditions:
• The battery voltage becomes low (due to elec-
trical load from other vehicle systems like
headlights, heaters, etc., or auxiliary devices
connected to the 12 volt socket inside the
vehicle).
• The vehicle speed is above about
2km/h (1
MPH).
• The front defogger is operated.
• When the temperature inside the vehicle is
too high or low. (When the air conditioner is
off, the Stop/Start System will operate.)
• When the front defogger is turned on. (The
engine may not start depending on the out-
side temperature.)
• When the battery capacity is low.
• When the power consumption is high.
• When the clutch pedal is depressed.
CAUTION
Only engage gear when the clutch pedal is fully
depressed. NOTE
The following conditions will prevent the Stop/
Start System from automatically restarting the
engine. Starting the engine with the ignition
switch operation is then necessary:
• The driver’s seat belt is unfastened, and driv-
er’s door is open.
• The bonnet is open.
Use this system while waiting at stoplight, etc. When
the vehicle is stopped for long periods of time, turn
off the engine.
When the engine is stopped by the Stop/Start Sys-
tem, heating, cooling and dehumidifying functions
will be deactivated. To avoid the air conditioning
functions from being deactivated, turn off the Idling
Stop mode by pressing the Stop/Start OFF switch.

Incorrect tyre selection, fitting, care or main-
tenance can affect vehicle safety with risk of
accident and injury. If in doubt, consult an
approved dealer or qualified workshop or the
tyre manufacturer.
TYRE WEAR AND DAMAGE
➀ :W
ear indicator
➁ :W
ear indicator location mark
Tyres should be periodically inspected for wear,
cracking, bulging or objects caught in the tread. If
excessive wear, cracks, bulging or deep cuts are
found, the tyre should be replaced immediately.
The original tyres have abuilt-in tread wear indica-
tor. When the wear indicator is visible, the tyre
should be replaced.
Improper service of aspare tyre may result in seri-
ous personal injury. If it is necessary to repair the
spare tyre, contact an approved dealer or qualified
workshop. TYRE AGE
Never use
atyre over six years old, regardless of
whether it has been used or not.
Tyres degrade with age as well as with the vehicle
usage. Have your tyres checked and balanced often
by arepair shop or, if you prefer, an approved dealer
or qualified workshop.
CHANGING TYRES AND WHEELS WARNING
Do not install
adeformed wheel or tyre even if it
has been repaired. Such wheels or tyres could
have structural damage and could fail without
warning.
When replacing atyre, use the same size, speed
rating and load carrying capacity as originally
equipped. (See “Tyres and wheels” in the “9. Tech-
nical information” section for recommended types
and sizes of tyres and wheels.) The use of tyres
other than those recommended or the mixed use of
tyres of different brands, construction (bias, bias-
belted, or radial), or tread patterns can adversely
affect the ride, braking, handling, ground clearance,
body-to-tyre clearance, snow chain clearance,
speedometer calibration, headlight aim and bumper
height. Some of these effects may lead to accidents
and could result in serious personal injury.
If the wheels are changed for any reason, always
replace with wheels which have the same offset
dimension. Wheels of adifferent offset could cause
early tyre wear, possibly degraded vehicle handling characteristics and/or interference with the brake
discs/drums. Such interference can lead to
decreased braking efficiency and/or early brake
pad/shoe wear.
WHEEL BALANCE
Unbalanced wheels may affect vehicle handling and
tyre life. Even with regular use, wheels can get out
of balance. Therefore, they should be balanced as
required.
SPARE TYRE
Conventional spare tyre (where fitted)
As tandard tyre (the same size as the road wheels)
is supplied with your vehicle.
Temporary spare tyre (where fitted)
The temporary spare tyre is adifferent size from the
road wheels.
Temporary spare tyres can be distinguished as fol-
lows:
—T yre and wheel size differs from the four mounted
tyres and wheels.
—T here is alabel in the wheel with aspeed limita-
tion.
In order to avoid malfunction adhere to the follow-
ing:
• Never drive at speeds above 80 km/h (50 MPH).
• Drive with special caution when
atemporary
spare wheel is mounted. SDI1663Z
