The engine is overheated. Carefully stop the vehicle in a safe place.
P. 8-4
If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or snow
1. Slowly press down on the accelerator pedal to
get your vehicle moving again. For an all-
wheel drive vehicle, set the drive mode-sel
ector to the “4WD AUTO” or “4WD LOCK”
position and then slowly press down on the
accelerator pedal to get your vehicle moving.
2. If there is nothing to stop your tires from sli
pping, rock your vehicle back and forth to free
it.
P. 8-14
WA R N I N G When trying to rock your vehicle out of a
stuck position, make sure that there are no
people nearby. The rocking motion may cau
se the vehicle to
suddenly lurch forward or backward, possibly injuring bystanders. Avoid revving the engine or spinning the
wheels. Prolonged efforts to free a stuck ve
hicle may result in overheating and transa
xle failure.
If your vehicle is still stuck after se
veral rocking attempts, call for help.

The operation mode can be in any mode to start the engine. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 15 seconds if the engine switch is released at once. Pressing the engine switch again while the startermotor is still turning will stop the starter motor. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 30 seconds whilethe engine switch is pressed. If the engine does not start, wait for a while and then attempt to start the engineagain. Trying repeatedly with the starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel.
The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. Refer to “Interrupt display screen (With ignitionswitch or operation mode in ON)” on page 5-95.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This isa system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting theengine.

For information on operation for vehicles equipped with the Free-hand Advanced Secu- rity Transmitter (F.A.S.T.-key), refer to “Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter(F.A.S.T.-key): Starting and stopping the engine” on page 5-20. [Except for vehicles equipped with the Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter(F.A.S.T.-key)] Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than
15 seconds as this
could run the battery down or damage thestarter motor. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to the “OFF” position, wait a few seconds, and then tryagain. Trying repeatedly with the engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” (on page 8-2)for instructions.

This model is equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This is a sys- tem that automatically controls fuel injection.
There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time.To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 4. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot.5. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 6. On vehicles equipped with manual trans-axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles equipped with continuouslyvariable transmission (CVT), make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position.

4-wheel drive operation 5-62 Features and controls
5
Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal as constant as possible, and drive at low speed.
Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steepslope. Avoid driving on steep slopes even
though the vehicle is an 4-wheel drive vehi- cle.
N00537800098
If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through water unless absolutely necessary. If driving through wateris unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive slowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.
Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, the engine and otherdrive-system components are put under excessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents. If any of the following conditions occur while the vehicle is being driven, immedi-ately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures:• If the engine coolant temperature display
flashes on the information screen in the multi-information display or the engine power drops suddenly. Refer to “Engine overheating” on page 8-4.• If the “ ” warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the “ ” warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.Refer to “Warning display” on page 5-54.
WA R N I N G When attempting to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, be sure that the area around the vehicle is clear of people and physical objects. The rocking motion may cause the vehicle to
suddenly launch for-
ward/backward, causing injury or dam- age to nearby people or objects.NOTE
Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration and sharp turning; such operations could result in the vehicle becoming stuck. If the vehicle becomes stuck in sandy or muddy roads, it can often be moved with a rocking motion. Move the gearshift leveralternately between the 1st and “R” (Reverse) positions (M/T), the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positions (CVT), whilepressing lightly on the accelerator pedal. Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehicle thoroughly as soon as possible after such use.
Climbing/descending sharp grades
Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change the gearshift lever posi-tion (M/T) or the selector lever position (CVT) while driving through water. Frequent driving through water canadversely affect the life span of the vehicle; consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice and take the necessary measures to prepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle.

To change the air selection, simply press the air selection switch. A sound will be madeevery time you push the switch. Outside air {Indicator light (A) OFF} Recirculated air {Indicator light (A) ON}
When the air conditioning turns on, the air selection is controlled automatically. When the air conditioning turns off, the air selection automatically goes back to the out- side air position. The air selection indicator light (A) shows the selected position.
If the outside air is dusty or contaminated in some way, use the recirculation position.Switch to the outside air position every now and then to keep th
e windows from fogging
up.
NOTE
While the engine coolant temperature is low, the temperature of the air from the heater will be cool/cold until the engine warms up, even if you have selected warm air with the dial. For instructions on how to use the “MAX A/C” position (A), refer to “For quick cool-ing” on page7-7.

NOTE
When the air conditioning operates with the air selection switch in
the outside air posi-
tion, the system automatically determines whether to continue using outside air or to perform recirculation. If the outside temperature is high, the system selects recirculation to achieve rapid cooling and causes the air selection indicator in theswitch to illuminate. When the air condition- ing turns off or the blower speed selection dial is set to the “OFF” position, the airselection automatically goes back to the out- side air position.CAUTION Using recirculated air for a long time may cause the windows to fog up.
