For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always check for the following:  Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and lift- gate are locked.  Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while still keeping good visibil- ity, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls.Check the instrument panel indicators and multi-information display for any possible problem. In the same way, the front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possi- ble. Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. Youshould be able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. Refer to “Defrosting or defogging (wind-shield, door windows)” on page 7-8, 7-13, 7-18, 7-24. Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails, glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Checkthe wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires (including spare tire) for proper pressure. Replace your tires before they are heavilyworn out. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, therefore, be performedonly by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turnsignal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, or other leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you needto find out why immediately and have it fixed.

 Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors and use your turn-signal light.  While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Always obey applicable laws and regula- tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such assudden braking.  If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle registration laws andmake sure you will be able to get the rightfuel.

 Check the battery. At the same time, check the terminals and wiring. During extremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, the battery powerlevel may drop because more power is used for cold starting and driving. Before driving the vehicle, check to see ifthe engine runs at the proper speed and if the headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary.During extreme cold weather, it is possi- ble that a very low battery could freeze.
 Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly. Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oil have time to spread to all the lubricationpoints.  Manual transaxle can be harder to shift in cold weather conditions. This is normaland shifting will get easier as the transaxle warms up.  Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of a leak or from engine overheating, add Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Super LongLife Coolant Premium or equivalent. Please read this section in conjunction with the “Engine coolant” on page 9-7.

All the parts of the brake system are criticalto safety. Have the vehicle serviced by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice at regular inter- vals according to the “WARRANTY ANDMAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Check the brake system while driving at a low speed immediately after starting, espe- cially when the brakes are wet, to confirm they work normally.A film of water can be formed on the brake discs and prevent normal braking after driv- ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, orafter the vehicle is wash
ed. If this occurs, dry
the brakes out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal.

Normally, use the outside air position to keepthe windshield and side windows clear and toquickly remove fog or frost from the wind- shield. To change the air selection, simply press the air selection switch. When the air condition- ing turns off or the blower speed selection dial is set to the “OFF” position, the airselection automatically goes back to the out- side air position.CAUTION Using recirculated air for a long time may cause the windows to fog up.

You can change the following functions to match your preference.  Enable automatic air control:
When the air conditioning operates, the air selection switch will be automatically controlled.  Disable automatic air control: Even when the air conditioning operates,the air selection switch will not be auto- matically controlled.  Changing the settings Press the air selection switch for about 10seconds or longer.When the setting has changed, the system will beep and the indicator light will flash. • When the setting has changed fromenabled to disabled, the system will beep three times and the indicator will flash three times.• When the setting has changed from dis- abled to enabled, the system will beep two times and the indicator light willflash three times.

Push the switch, and the air conditioningcompressor will turn on. The air conditioningindicator light (A) will come on. A sound will be made every time you push the switch. Push the switch again and the air condition- ing compressor will stop and the indicator light (A) goes off.
NOTE
 While the mode selection dial is set between “ ” and “ ” position, the air condition- ing compressor will run automatically. The outside air position will also be selectedautomatically. (In this case, the air condition- ing indicator will not change.)  When the temperature control dial is set to the “MAX A/C” position, the air selection will be automatically set to the recirculationposition.  When the temperature control dial is in the “MAX A/C” position, if it is set to a position other than “MAX A/C”, the setting for the air selection switch is selected as describedbelow. The selection of recirculated air or outside air depends on the setting before “MAX A/C” was used. • If automatic control was set: Automatic control is continued • If recirculated air was selected: Recirculated air is selected • If outside air was selected: Outside air is continued

 If a problem is detected in the air condition- ing compressor, the air conditioning indica- tor light (A) blinks. If it does blink, have it checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer or a repair facility of your choice.  Sometimes, for example after using a high- pressure car wash, the condenser can get wet, and the air conditioning indicator light (A) blinks temporarily. Wait for a while, pressthe air conditioning switch once to turn the system off, then once more to turn it back on. Once the water evaporates, the blinking willstop.
