The indicator lamp in the button goes out. The
previously selected settings are restored.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate control
switches to the following functions:

Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on the inside
XActivate the ¿orÁ cooling with air
dehumidification function.
XDual-zon eautomatic air conditioning: acti-
vate the Ãmode button.
XIf the windows continue to fog up, activate the
¬ "Windshield defrosting" function.

Rear window defroster
General notes
The rear window defroster has ahigh current
draw. You should therefor eswitch it off as soon
as the rear window is clear. Otherwise, the rear window defroster switches off automatically
after several minutes.
If the battery voltage is too low, the rear window
defroster may switch off.
Activating/deactivating
XTurn the SmartKey to position 2in the ignition
lock (Ypage 115).
XPress the ¤button.
The indicator lamp in the ¤button lights
up or goes out.

Starting procedure with the SmartKey
To start the engine using the SmartKey instead
of KEYLESS-GO, pul lthe Start/Stop button out
of the ignitio nlock.
XTurn the SmartKey to position 3in the ignition
lock (Ypag e115) and release it as soon as the
engine is running.
UsingK EYLESS-GO to start the engine
The Start/Stop button can be used to start the
vehicl emanually withou tinserting the SmartKey
into the ignitio nlock. The Start/Stop button
must be inserted in the ignitio nlock and the
SmartKey must be in the vehicle. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of
the ECO start/stop automatic engine start func-
tion.
XDepress the brake pedala nd keep it
depressed.
XPress the Start/Stop button once
(Ypag e115).

Pulling away
General notes
GWARNING
If the engine speedisa bove the idling speed
and you engage transmission position Dor R,
the vehicl ecould pul lawa ysuddenly.T here is

When engaging transmission position Dor R,
alway sfirmly depress the brake pedala nd do
not simultaneously accelerate.
!Change gearing ood time and avoi dspin-
ning the wheels. You could otherwise damage
the vehicle.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pulling
away.
The vehicl elocks centrally once you have pulled
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the insid eatany
time.
You can als odeactivate the automatic locking
feature (
Ypag e173).
It is only possible to shift the transmission from
position Pto the desired position if you depress
the brake pedal. Only then is the shift lock
released.
iUpshifts take place at highere ngine speeds
after acold start. This help sthe catalytic con-
verter to reach its operating temperature
more quickly.

Hill start assist
Hill start assist help syou when pulling awa yfor-
ward sorinr everse on an uphill gradient. It holds
the vehicl efor as hort time after you have
removed you rfoot from the brake pedal. This
gives you enoug htime to move you rfoot from
the brake pedaltot he accelerator pedala nd to
depress it before the vehicl ebegins to roll.
GWARNING
After ashort time, hill start assist wil lnolon-
ger brake you rvehicl eand it could roll away.
There is arisk of an accident and injury.
Therefore, quickly move you rfoot from the
brake pedaltot he accelerator pedal. Never
leave the vehicl ewhen it is held by hill start
assist.
Hill start assist is not active if:
Ryou are pulling awa yonalevel road or on a
downhill gradient.
Rthe transmission is in position N.
Rthe electric parking brake is applied.

The ECO start/sto pfunction switches the

The ECO start/sto pfunction is activated when-
ever you switch on th eengine usingt heSmart-

Automatic engine switch-off

Automatic engine switch-off can tak eplacea
maximum of four times in arow (initial stop, then
three subsequents tops).
The HOLD function can be activated if the
engine has been switched off automatically. It is
then no tnecessaryt ocontinue applyingt he
brakes durin gthe automatic stop phase.W hen
you depress th eaccelerato rpedal, th eengine
start sautomaticall yand th ebraking effect of
th eH OLDf unction is deactivated.

If the coolant level is correct,t he engine radiator fan may be faulty. The
coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently.
XAt coolant temperatures below 248 ‡(120 †), drive to the nearest
qualified specialist workshop.
XAvoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in moun-
tainou sterrai nand stop-and-go traffic.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tbutton
Use the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program selected the following vehicle characteristics
wil lchange:
Rthe drive (engine and transmission manage-
ment)
Rthe suspension( vehicles with adaptive
adjustabl edamping or AMG sports suspen-
sion)
Rthe steering
Rthe availability of the ECO start/stop function
Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program Cis
activated. For further information about starting
the engine, see (

XPress DYNAMIC SELECT button :as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
programiss elected.
The selected drive programa ppears in the
multifunction display. After ashort time the displayg
oes out and the status icon of the
selected drive programa ppears.
In addition, the current drive programs ettings
are displayed briefly in the multimedi asystem
display.
iIn af ew countries, the ECO start/stop func-
tion is deactivated at the factory due to the
available fuel grade. In this case, the ECO
start/stop function is not available in any
drive program, regardless of the displayint he

transmission shifts to Pautomatically.
With KEYLESS-GO: if you then open the driver's
or front-passenger door, the automatic trans-

You can chang egear yourself using the steering
wheel paddle shifters. The transmission must be
in position D.
Depending on which steering wheel paddle
shifter is pulled, the automatic transmission
immediately shiftsi ntot he nex tgear down or
up, if permitted.
To use manual shifting, you have two options:
Rtemporary setting
Rpermanen tsetting
If you activate manual gearshifting, the multi-
function display will show the currentg ear
instead of transmission position D.
If manual gearshifting is deactivated, the gears
will be selected automatically.
Temporary setting
