Start/Stop Engine
Emergency Operation for Starting the Engine
If the KEY warning light (red) illuminates,
or the push button start indicator light
(amber) fl ashes, this could indicate that
the engine may not start using the usual
starting method. Have your vehicle
inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer
as soon as possible. If this occurs, the
engine can be force-started. Press and hold
the push button start until the engine starts.
Other procedures necessary for starting the
engine such as having the key in the cabin,
and depressing the clutch pedal (manual
transaxle) or the brake pedal (automatic
transaxle) are required.
Turning the Engine Off
WARNING
Do not stop the engine while the vehicle
is moving: Stopping the engine while the vehicle
is moving for any reason other than in
an emergency is dangerous. Stopping
the engine while the vehicle is moving
will result in reduced braking ability
due to the loss of power braking, which
could cause an accident and serious
injury.

1. Stop the vehicle completely.
2. (Manual transaxle)
Shift into neutral and set the parking brake.
(Automatic transaxle)
Shift the selector lever to the P position and set the parking brake.
3. Press the push button start to turn off the engine. The ignition position is off.

CAUTION
When leaving the vehicle, make sure
the push button start is off .

Start/Stop Engine
NOTE
  The cooling fan in the engine
compartment could turn on for a few
minutes after the ignition is switched
from ON to OFF, whether or not the
A/C is on or off, to cool the engine
compartment quickly.
  If the system detects that the remaining
battery power of the key is low when the
ignition is switched from ON to ACC or
OFF, the following is indicated.
 Replace with a new battery before the key becomes unusable.
 Refer to Key Battery Replacement on page 6-36 .
 (Vehicle equipped with Type A
instrument cluster)
 A message is indicated in the display of
the instrument cluster.
 (Vehicle equipped with Type B
instrument cluster)
 The KEY indicator light (green) fl ashes
for approximately 30 seconds.
 Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-32 .
  (Automatic transaxle)  If the engine is turned off while the
selector lever is in a position other than
P, the ignition switches to ACC.

Emergency Engine Stop
Continuously pressing the push button
start or quickly pressing it any number of
times while the engine is running or the
vehicle is being driven will turn the engine
off immediately. The ignition switches to
ACC.

  If any of the INFO switch is pressed
while a message is displayed, it will no
longer be displayed the next time the
ignition is switched ON.
  After the vehicle is serviced and the
remaining time/distance is reset, the
message for the next maintenance
period will be displayed when the
remaining distance or time to the next
maintenance period approaches 0
(displays when engine is started).
  If there are multiple messages, they are
displayed according to their order.
  If OFF is set for Messages, messages
are not displayed.

Automatic Transaxle
Shift-Lock System
The shift-lock system prevents shifting out
of P unless the brake pedal is depressed.

To shift from P:

1. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
2. Start the engine.
3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.

NOTE
  When the ignition is switched to ACC or
the ignition is switched off, the selector
lever cannot be shifted from P.
  The ignition cannot be switched to OFF
if the selector lever is not in P.

Shift-Lock Override
If the selector lever will not move from P
using the proper shift procedure, continue
to hold down the brake pedal.

1. Remove the shift-lock override cover using a cloth-wrapped fl at head
screwdriver.
2. Insert a screwdriver and push it down.

3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.

Take the vehicle to an Authorized Mazda
Dealer to have the system checked.
Transaxle Ranges
   The shift position indicator light in the
instrument cluster illuminates. Refer
to Warning/Indicator Lights on page
4-32 .
   The selector lever must be in P or N to
operate the starter.

P (Park)
P locks the transaxle and prevents the front
wheels from rotating.
WARNING
Always set the selector lever to P and set
the parking brake: Only setting the selector lever to the
P position without using the parking
brake to hold the vehicle is dangerous.
If P fails to hold, the vehicle could move
and cause an accident.

CAUTION
 Shifting into P, N or R while the vehicle is moving can damage your transaxle.
 Shifting into a driving gear or reverse when the engine is running faster than
idle can damage the transaxle.

R (Reverse)
In position R, the vehicle moves only
backward. You must be at a complete
stop before shifting to or from R, except
under rare circumstances as explained in
Rocking the Vehicle (page 3-51 ).
N (Neutral)
In N, the wheels and transaxle are not
locked. The vehicle will roll freely even
on the slightest incline unless the parking
brake or brakes are on.

AUTOHOLD
The AUTOHOLD function automatically holds the vehicle stopped, even if you take your
foot off the brake pedal. This function can be best used while stopped in traffi c or at a traf fi c
light. The brakes will automatically release when you start driving again (rel\
easing the
clutch pedal while in gear (manual transaxle) or depressing the accele\
rator pedal (automatic
transaxle)).

CAUTION
If you stop operating the accelerator pedal before the vehicle starts moving, the force
holding the vehicle in the stopped position may weaken. Firmly depress the brake pedal
or depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.

NOTE
  Under the following conditions, a problem with the AUTOHOLD is occurring. Have your
vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.
  The brake pedal operation request warning light (red) in the instrument cluster fl ashes
and the warning sound is activated for about fi ve seconds while the AUTOHOLD is
operating or when you press the AUTOHOLD switch.
   A message is indicated on the multi-information display and a warning sou\
nd is
activated for about fi ve seconds while the AUTOHOLD is operating or when your
press the AUTOHOLD switch.
   If the ignition is switched OFF while the AUTOHOLD is still operating, the electric
parking brake (EPB) is applied automatically shift lever is shifted to\
R.
  (Automatic transaxle vehicle)  The AUTOHOLD is canceled when the shift lever is shifted to R while the vehicle\
is on
level ground, or facing up a hill or grade (as shown below).

Hill Launch Assist (HLA)
Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is a function
which assists the driver in accelerating
from a stop while on a slope. When
the driver releases the brake pedal and
depresses the accelerator pedal while
on a slope, the function prevents the
vehicle from rolling. The braking force is
maintained automatically after the brake
pedal is released on a steep grade.
Hill Launch Assist (HLA) operates on a
downward slope when the selector lever
is in the reverse (R) position, and on an
upward slope when the selector lever is in
a forward gear.
WARNING
Do not rely completely on Hill Launch
Assist (HLA): Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is an auxiliary
device for accelerating from a stop
on a slope. The system only operates
for about two seconds and therefore,
relying only on the system, when
accelerating from a stop is dangerous
because the vehicle may move (roll)
unexpectedly and cause an accident.
The vehicle could roll depending on
the vehicle's load or if it is towing
something.
Always confi rm the safety around the
vehicle before starting to drive the
vehicle.

NOTE
  Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not
operate on a gentle slope. In addition,
the gradient of the slope on which the
system will operate changes depending
on the vehicle's load.
  Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not
operate if the parking brake is applied,
or if the vehicle has not stopped
completely.
  While Hill Launch Assist (HLA) is
operating, the brake pedal may feel
stiff and vibrate, however, this does not
indicate a malfunction.
  Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not
operate while the TCS/DSC indicator
light is illuminated.
 Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-32 .
  Hill Launch Assist (HLA) does not
turn off even if the TCS OFF switch is
pressed to turn off the TCS.
