To Operate the System
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
operates to switch the headlights
automatically between high and low
beams after the ignition is switched ON
and the headlight switch is in the AUTO
and high beam position.
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
determines that it is dark based on the
brightness of the surrounding area. At the
same time, the High Beam Control System
(HBC) indicator light (green) in the
instrument cluster illuminates.



N O T E
 


y When the vehicle speed is 30 km/h
(19 mph) or higher, the headlights
automatically switch to high beams
when there are no vehicles ahead or
approaching in the opposite direction.
  When the vehicle speed is less than
about 20 km/h (12 mph), the High Beam
Control System (HBC) switches the
headlights to low beams.
 


y The low beams may not switch to high
beams when cornering.
 


y Operation of the High Beam Control
System (HBC) function can be disabled.
Refer to Personalization Features on
page 9-10 .

y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) detects a vehicle ahead by emitting a near-infrared
laser beam and receiving the beam reÀ ected off the reÀ ector of the vehicle ahead, and
then using it for the measurement. Consequently, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
may not operate under the following conditions:
 


y ReÀ ection of the laser is poor due to the shape of the vehicle ahead.



y The vehicle ahead is signi¿ cantly dirty.



y Under bad weather condition, such as rain, fog and snow.



y The window washer is being used or the windshield wipers are not used when it's
raining.
 


y The windshield is dirty.



y The steering wheel is turned completely left or right, or the vehicle is accelerated
rapidly and comes close to the vehicle ahead.
 


y Trucks with low loading platforms and vehicles with an extremely low or high pro¿ le.



y Vehicles with certain shapes such as a vehicle carrier. 



y Under the following conditions, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
 


y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.



y If there is the possibility of partial contact with a vehicle ahead.



y When driving on continuously curving roads, and entering and exiting exits.



y Elongated luggage or cargo is loaded onto installed roof rails and covers the laser
sensor (front).
 


y Exhaust gas from the vehicle in front, sand, snow, and water vapor rising from
manholes and grating, and water splashed into the air.
 


y When towing a malfunctioning vehicle.



y When driving with tires having signi¿ cantly different wear. 



y In the following cases, the laser sensor (front) may inadvertently determine that there is a
vehicle ahead and the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may operate.
 


y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve.



y Vehicles passing in the opposite lane while making a curve.



y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.



y When passing through a toll gate equipped with a bar.



y When passing under a vinyl curtain or À ag.



y Plastic objects such as pylons.



y Two-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, animals or standing trees. 



y When the system operates, the user is noti¿ ed by the À ashing Smart City Brake Support
(SCBS) indicator light (red) and the active driving display * . 


y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) warning light (amber) turns on when the system
has a malfunction.

Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) *
Your vehicle is equipped with a Forward Sensing Camera (FSC). The Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) is positioned near the rearview mirror and used by the following systems.
 


y High Beam Control System (HBC)



y Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)



y Smart Brake Support (SBS)

Forward Sensing Camera (FSC)

The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) determines the conditions ahead of the vehicle while
traveling at night and detects traf¿ c lanes. The distance in which the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) can detect objects varies depending on the surrounding conditions.

CAUTION
 


¾ Do not apply accessories, stickers or fi lm to the windshield near the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC).
  If the area in front of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens is obstructed, it will cause
the system to not operate correctly. Consequently, each system may not operate normally
which could lead to an unexpected accident.
 


¾ Do not disassemble or modify the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
 Disassembly or modifi cation of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) will cause a malfunction
or mistaken operation. Consequently, each system may not operate normally which could
lead to an unexpected accident.
 


¾ Heed the following cautions to assure the correct operation of the Forward Sensing Camera
(FSC).
 


¾ The direction of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) has been fi nely adjusted, therefore
do not change the installation position or remove the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
 


¾ Be careful not to scratch the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens or allow it to get dirty.



¾ Do not remove the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cover.



¾ Do not place objects on the dashboard which refl ect light.



¾ Always keep the windshield glass around the camera clean by removing dirt or fogging.
Use the windshield defroster to remove fogging on the windshield.
 


¾ Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer regarding cleaning the interior side of the
windshield around the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
 


¾ Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer before performing repairs around the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
 


¾ The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is installed to the windshield. Consult an Authorized
Mazda Dealer for windshield repair and replacement.
 


¾ When performing repairs around the rearview mirror, consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer.
 


¾ Do not hit or apply strong force to the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) or the area around
it. If strong force is applied, stop using the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), the
High Beam Control System (HBC), and the Smart Brake Support (SBS) and consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
 


¾ The direction in which the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is pointed has been fi nely
adjusted. Do not change the installation position of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC)
or remove it. Otherwise, it could result in damage or malfunction.

y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cannot detect target objects
correctly, and each system may be unable to operate normally.
 


y The height of the vehicle ahead is low.



y You drive your vehicle at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.



y Headlights are not turned on during the night or when going through a tunnel. 



y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) may not be able to detect
target objects correctly.
 


y When driving next to walls with no patterning (including fences and longitudinally
striped walls).
 


y The taillights of the vehicle ahead are turned off.



y A vehicle is outside the illumination range of the headlights.



y The vehicle is making a sharp turn, or ascending or descending a steep slope.



y Entering or exiting a tunnel.



y Heavy luggage is loaded causing the vehicle to tilt.



y Strong light is shone at the front of the vehicle (back light or high-beam light from on-
coming vehicles).
 


y There are many light emitters on the vehicle ahead.



y When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at
nighttime.
 


y The vehicle ahead has a special shape. For example, a vehicle towing a trailer house
or a boat, or a vehicle carrier carrying a vehicle with its front pointed rearward.

y The displayable range is limited. Objects under the bumper or around the bumper ends
cannot be displayed.
 


y The distance appearing in the displayed image is different from the actual distance
because the rear view parking camera is equipped with a speci¿ c lens.




y Some optionally installed vehicle accessories may be picked up by the camera. Do not
install any optional parts that can interfere with the camera view, such as illuminating
parts or parts made of reÀ ective material.




y It may be dif¿ cult to see the display under the following conditions, however, it does not
indicate a malfunction.
 


y In darkened areas.



y When the temperature around the lens is high/low.



y When the camera is wet such as on a rainy day or during periods of high humidity.



y When foreign material such as mud is stuck around the camera.



y When the camera lens reÀ ects sunlight or headlight beams. 



y Image display may be delayed if the temperature around the camera is low.

4. Turn the socket and bulb assembly
to remove it. Carefully remove the
bulb from its socket in the reÀ ector by
gently pulling it straight backward out
of the socket.



5. Install the new bulb in the reverse order
of the removal procedure.

Low-beam bulbs
1. Make sure the ignition is switched off,
and the headlight switch is off.
2. Lift the hood.
3. Disconnect the connector from the unit
by pressing the tab on the connector
with your ¿ nger and pulling the
connector downward.



4. Turn the socket and bulb assembly
to remove it. Carefully remove the
bulb from its socket in the reÀ ector by
gently pulling it straight backward out
of the socket.



5. Install the new bulb in the reverse order
of the removal procedure.
