•With your foot on the brake, shiftthrough all the gears while the engineis running.
•We recommend that you change theengine oil before you use your vehicleagain.
Fuel System
•Fill the fuel tank with high-quality fueluntil the first automatic shutoff of thefuel pump nozzle.
Cooling System
•Protect against freezing temperatures.
•When removing your vehicle fromstorage, check coolant fluid level.Confirm that there are no coolingsystem leaks and that fluid is at therecommended level.
12V Battery
•Check and recharge as necessary. Keepconnections clean.
•If storing your vehicle for more than 30days without recharging the battery,we recommend that you disconnectthe battery cables to maintain batterycharge for quick starting.
Note:It is necessary to reset memoryfeatures if you disconnect the batterycables.
We recommend the following options foryour plug-in vehicle:
•Leave your vehicle plugged in. The 12Vbattery maintains power if left pluggedin. However, this periodically useselectricity from the household outlet.
•Connect a battery charger to your 12Vbattery and leave it on a continuous, slow charge.
•Disconnect the 12V battery. If your 12Vbattery is located in the luggagecompartment, do not fully shut theluggage compartment afterdisconnecting the 12V battery. Onlyleave the luggage compartment openif your vehicle is stored in a lockedlocation.
Brakes
•Make sure the brakes and parking brakerelease fully.
Tires
•Maintain recommended air pressure.
Miscellaneous
•Make sure you cover all linkages, cables, levers and pins under yourvehicle with grease to prevent rust.
•Move vehicles at least 25 ft (7.5 m)every 15 days to lubricate working partsand prevent corrosion.
Removing Vehicle From Storage
When your vehicle is ready to come out ofstorage, do the following:
•Wash your vehicle to remove any dirtor grease film build-up on windowsurfaces.
•Check windshield wipers for anydeterioration.

Ford Motor Company has recommendedmaintenance intervals for various partsand component systems based uponengineering testing. Ford Motor Companyrelies upon this testing to determine themost appropriate mileage for replacementof oils and fluids to protect your vehicle atthe lowest overall cost to you andrecommends against maintenanceschedules that deviate from the scheduledmaintenance information.
We strongly recommend the use of onlygenuine Ford, Motorcraft orFord-authorized re-manufacturedreplacement parts engineered for yourvehicle.
Oil Change Indicator
Your vehicle is equipped with aninformation display, which indicates theproper oil change interval. This intervalmay be up to one year or 10000 miles(16000 kilometers).
A message appears in the informationdisplay when it is time for an oil change.Make sure you perform the oil changewithin two weeks or 500 miles (800kilometers) of the message appearing.Make sure you reset the oil monitoringsystem after each oil change. See EngineOil Check (page 255).
If your information display resetsprematurely, becomes inoperative or thevehicle battery becomes discharged ordisconnected, the oil monitoring systemresets to 100% oil life. You should changeyour engine oil one year or 10000 miles(16000 kilometers) from the previous oilchange. Never exceed one year or 10000miles (16000 kilometers) between oilchange intervals.
Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (ifequipped)
Your vehicle is equipped with theIntelligent Oil-Life Monitor system, whichdisplays a message in the informationdisplay at the proper oil change interval. This interval may be up to two years or20000 miles (32000 kilometers).

If your information display resetsprematurely or becomes inoperative, youshould perform the oil change interval atsix months or 5000 miles (8000kilometers) from your last oil change.Never exceed two years or 20000 miles(32000 kilometers) between oil changeintervals.
Additives and Chemicals
This owner's manual and the FordWorkshop Manual list the recommendedadditives and chemicals for your vehicle. We do not recommend using chemicals oradditives not approved by us as part ofyour vehicle’s normal maintenance. Pleaseconsult your warranty information.
Oils, Fluids and Flushing
In many cases, fluid discoloration is anormal operating characteristic and, byitself, does not necessarily indicate aconcern or that the fluid needs to bechanged. However, a qualified expert, suchas the factory-trained technicians at yourdealership, should inspect discolored fluidsthat also show signs of overheating orforeign material contaminationimmediately.

Scheduled Maintenance

Make sure to change your vehicle’s oils andfluids at the specified intervals or inconjunction with a repair. Flushing is aviable way to change fluid for many vehiclesub-systems during scheduledmaintenance. It is critical that systems areflushed only with new fluid that is the sameas that required to fill and operate the
system or using a Ford-approved flushingchemical.
Owner Checks and Services
Make sure you perform the following basicmaintenance checks and inspections everymonth or at six-month intervals.
Check every month
Engine oil level.
Function of all interior and exterior lights.
Tires (including spare) for wear and proper pressure.
Windshield washer fluid level.
Check every six months
Battery connections. Clean if necessary.
Body and door drain holes for obstructions. Clean if necessary.
Cooling system fluid level and coolant strength.
Door weatherstrips for wear. Lubricate if necessary.
Hinges, latches and outside locks for proper operation. Lubricate if necessary.
Parking brake for proper operation.
Safety belts and seat latches for wear and function.
Safety warning lamps (brake, ABS, airbag and safety belt) for operation.
Washer spray and wiper operation. Clean or replace blades as necessary.
Check Every 12 Months
Inspect the engine oil filter for signs ofdamage such as rust, paint blistering, scratches or dents. If any of theseconditions are present, replace the filter.See Normal Scheduled Maintenance(page 469).
