
Look for a label on the fuel pump toconfirm the amount of biodiesel containedin a diesel fuel. Biodiesel content is oftenindicated with the letter B followed by thepercent of biodiesel in the fuel. Forexample, B20 indicates a fuel containing20% biodiesel. Ask the service stationattendant to confirm the biodiesel contentof a diesel fuel if you do not see a label onthe fuel pump.
Biodiesel fuels degrade more easily thandiesel fuels not containing biodiesel andshould not be stored in the fuel tank formore than 1 month. If you plan to park orstore your vehicle for more than 1 month,then you should empty your vehicle fueltank of biodiesel fuel. You should fill thetank with a pure petroleum-based dieselfuel and run your vehicle for a minimum of30 minutes.
Note:Degraded or oxidized biodiesel candamage fuel system seals and plastics andcorrode steel parts.
During cold weather, if you have problemsoperating on biodiesel, you may need touse a diesel fuel with lower biodieselcontent, try another brand, or discontinuethe use of biodiesel.
Diesel Fuel Additives
It should not be necessary to add anyaftermarket additives to your fuel if youuse a high quality diesel fuel that conformsto ASTM industry specifications.Aftermarket additives can damage the fuelinjector system or engine.
Use Motorcraft® cetane booster or anequivalent cetane booster additive if yoususpect fuel has low cetane. UseMotorcraft® anti-gel & performanceimprover or an equivalent additive if thereis fuel gelling.
Do not use alcohol-based additives toimprove cetane quality, to prevent fuelgelling or any other use. The use of alcoholadditives may result in damage to the fuelinjectors and system. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).
The Vehicle Warranty may not coverrepairs needed to correct the effects ofusing an aftermarket product that doesnot meet Ford specifications in your fuel.
FUEL QUALITY - GASOLINE
Choosing the Right Fuel
We recommend regular unleaded gasolinewith a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octanerating of 87. Some fuel stations offer fuelsposted as regular unleaded gasoline withan octane rating below 87, particularly inhigh altitude areas. We do not recommendfuels with an octane rating below 87.
Do not use any fuel other than thoserecommended because they could lead toengine damage that may not be coveredby the vehicle Warranty.
Note:Use of any fuel other than thoserecommended can impair the emissioncontrol system and cause a loss of vehicleperformance.
Do not use:
•Diesel fuel.
•Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
•Fuel containing more than 15% ethanolor E85 fuel.

Selective catalytic reduction systems aresensitive to contamination of the dieselexhaust fluid. Maintaining the purity of thefluid is important to avoid systemmalfunctions. If you remove or drain thediesel exhaust fluid tank, do not use thesame fluid to refill the tank. The systemhas a sensor to monitor fluid quality.
A warning lamp illuminates anda message appears in theinformation display if the systembecomes contaminated or inoperative.
Continued driving without replacing dieselexhaust fluid or having the selectivecatalytic reduction system repaired resultsin the following actions as required by theCalifornia Air Resources Board (CARB) andU.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA):
•Within a preset distance to empty,speed is limited upon vehicle restart.Prior to this occurring a messageappears in the information display.
•Further vehicle operation withoutreplacing contaminated diesel exhaustfluid causes the engine to enter anidle-only condition. This only occursupon vehicle refueling, vehicle idling inpark for 1 hour, or engine shutdown for10 minutes or more and is indicated bya message in the information displayindicating required actions to resumenormal operation.
Note:For vehicle speed limiting or idle-onlycondition, normal vehicle operation resumeswhen you repair the contaminated system.To service a contaminated or inoperativesystem, see an authorized dealer.
REFUELING - GASOLINE
WARNINGS
Fuel vapor burns violently and a fuelfire can cause severe injuries.
Read and follow all the instructionson the pump island.
Turn off your engine when you arerefueling.
Do not smoke if you are near fuel orrefueling your vehicle.
Keep sparks, flames and smokingmaterials away from fuel.
Stay outside your vehicle and do notleave the fuel pump unattendedwhen refueling your vehicle. This isagainst the law in some places.
Keep children away from the fuelpump; never let children pump fuel.
Do not use personal electronicdevices while refueling.
Wait at least 10 seconds beforeremoving the fuel pump nozzle toallow any residual fuel to drain intothe fuel tank.
Stop refueling after the fuel pumpnozzle automatically shuts off for thesecond time. Failure to follow thiswill fill the expansion space in the fuel tankand could lead to fuel overflowing.
Do not remove the fuel pump nozzlefrom its fully inserted position whenrefueling.

Your vehicle has various emission controlcomponents and a catalytic converter thatenables it to comply with applicableexhaust emission standards.
To make sure that the catalytic converterand other emission control componentscontinue to work properly:
•Use only the specified fuel listed.
•Avoid running out of fuel.
•Do not turn off the ignition while yourvehicle is moving, especially at highspeeds.
•Have the items listed in scheduledmaintenance information performedaccording to the specified schedule.
The scheduled maintenance items listedin scheduled maintenance information areessential to the life and performance ofyour vehicle and to its emissions system.
If you use anything other than Ford,Motorcraft or Ford-authorized parts formaintenance replacements or for serviceof components affecting emission control,such non-Ford parts should be equivalentto genuine Ford Motor Company parts inperformance and durability.
Illumination of the service engine soonindicator, charging system warning light orthe temperature warning light, fluid leaks,strange odors, smoke or loss of enginepower could indicate that the emissioncontrol system is not working properly.
An improperly operating or damagedexhaust system may allow exhaust toenter the vehicle. Have a damaged orimproperly operating exhaust systeminspected and repaired immediately.
Do not make any unauthorized changes toyour vehicle or engine. By law, vehicleowners and anyone who manufactures,repairs, services, sells, leases, tradesvehicles, or supervises a fleet of vehiclesare not permitted to intentionally remove
an emission control device or prevent itfrom working. Information about yourvehicle’s emission system is on the VehicleEmission Control Information Decallocated on or near the engine. This decalalso lists engine displacement.
Please consult your warranty informationfor complete details.
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II)
Your vehicle has a computer known as theon-board diagnostics system (OBD-II) thatmonitors the engine’s emission controlsystem. The system protects theenvironment by making sure that yourvehicle continues to meet governmentemission standards. The OBD-II systemalso assists a service technician in properlyservicing your vehicle.
When the service engine soonindicator illuminates, the OBD-IIsystem has detected amalfunction. Temporary malfunctions maycause the service engine soon indicator toilluminate. Examples are:
1. Your vehicle has run out of fuel—theengine may misfire or run poorly.
2. Poor fuel quality or water in thefuel—the engine may misfire or runpoorly.
3. The fuel fill inlet may not have closedproperly. See Refueling (page 192).
4. Driving through deep water—theelectrical system may be wet.
You can correct these temporarymalfunctions by filling the fuel tank withgood quality fuel, properly closing the fuelfill inlet or letting the electrical system dryout. After three driving cycles without theseor any other temporary malfunctions

present, the service engine soon indicatorshould stay off the next time you start theengine. A driving cycle consists of a coldengine startup followed by mixed city andhighway driving. No additional vehicleservice is required.
If the service engine soon indicator remainson, have your vehicle serviced at the firstavailable opportunity. Although somemalfunctions detected by the OBD-II maynot have symptoms that are apparent,continued driving with the service enginesoon indicator on can result in increasedemissions, lower fuel economy, reducedengine and transmission smoothness andlead to more costly repairs.
Readiness for Inspection andMaintenance (I/M) Testing
Some state and provincial and localgovernments may haveInspection/Maintenance (I/M) programsto inspect the emission control equipmenton your vehicle. Failure to pass thisinspection could prevent you from gettinga vehicle registration.
If the service engine soonindicator is on or the bulb doesnot work, your vehicle may needservice. See On-Board Diagnostics.
Your vehicle may not pass the I/M test ifthe service engine soon indicator is on ornot working properly (bulb is burned out),or if the OBD-II system has determinedthat some of the emission control systemshave not been properly checked. In thiscase, the vehicle is not ready for I/Mtesting.
If the vehicle’s engine or transmission hasjust been serviced, or the battery hasrecently run down or been replaced, theOBD-II system may indicate that thevehicle is not ready for I/M testing. Todetermine if the vehicle is ready for I/Mtesting, turn the ignition key to the on
position for 15 seconds without crankingthe engine. If the service engine soonindicator blinks eight times, it means thatthe vehicle is not ready for I/M testing; ifthe service engine soon indicator stays onsolid, it means that your vehicle is readyfor I/M testing.
The OBD-II system checks the emissioncontrol system during normal driving. Acomplete check may take several days.
If the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing,you can perform the following driving cycleconsisting of mixed city and highwaydriving:
1. 15 minutes of steady driving on anexpressway or highway followed by 20minutes of stop-and-go driving with atleast four 30-second idle periods.
2. Allow your vehicle to sit for at leasteight hours with the ignition off. Then,start the vehicle and complete theabove driving cycle. The vehicle mustwarm up to its normal operatingtemperature. Once started, do not turnoff the vehicle until the above drivingcycle is complete.
If the vehicle is still not ready for I/Mtesting, you need to repeat the abovedriving cycle.

•Park your vehicle 10–15 ft (3–5 m)away from any obstructions and awayfrom materials that can easily combustor melt, for example paper, leaves,petroleum products, fuels, plastics andother dry organic material.
•Make sure there is a minimum of 1/8tank of fuel.
•Make sure all fluids are at proper levels.
How to Start Operator CommandedRegeneration
WARNING
Stay clear of the exhaust tailpipeduring regeneration. Hot exhaustgases can burn you badly.
Note:You cannot use the operatorcommanded regeneration until the dieselparticulate filter load percentage hasreached 100%. The diesel particulate filterload percentage fluctuates up and downwhen driving your vehicle due to active andpassive regenerations.
Note:During the use of operatorcommanded regeneration, you may observea light amount of white smoke. This isnormal.
You may not be able to useoperator commandedregeneration if the service enginesoon warning lamp appears in theinformation display
Information Display Procedure
Start with your vehicle engine and when ithas reached the normal operatingtemperature, press the information displaycontrol button on the steering wheel. SeeGeneral Information (page 111). If amessage advising that the exhaust filter isfull appears in the information display,press the OK button to set the display toY. Answer yes to this prompt and then
follow the next prompts regarding exhaustposition required to initiate operatorcommanded regeneration. Be sure tounderstand each prompt. If you are notsure what is being asked by each prompt,contact an authorized dealer. The displayconfirms the operation has started andwhen it has finished.
If the diesel particulate filter is near or atsaturation, a message requestingpermission to initiate filter cleaningappears in the information display. SeeInformation Messages (page 128).Answer yes to this prompt and then followthe next prompts regarding exhaustposition required to initiate operatorcommanded regeneration. Be sure tounderstand each prompt. If you are notsure what is being asked by each prompt,contact an authorized dealer. The displayconfirms the operation has started andwhen it has finished. You can also drive toclean the filter.
When the system is at the pointof oversaturation, the serviceengine warning lamp illuminatesand a message appears in the informationdisplay. You cannot initiate filter cleaning.You must have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.
Once operator commanded regenerationstarts, engine speed increases toapproximately 2000–2500 rpm and thecooling fan speed increases. You will heara change in audible sound due to enginespeed and cooling fan speed increases.
It is not necessary to open the hood on theengine compartment. Once operatorcommanded regeneration completes, theengine speed returns to normal idling. Theexhaust system remains very hot forseveral minutes even after regeneration iscomplete. Do not reposition the vehicleover materials that could burn until the

exhaust system has had sufficient time tocool. Depending on the amount of sootcollected by the diesel particulate filter,ambient temperature and altitude,operator commanded regeneration lastsapproximately 30 minutes.
Operator Commanded Regenerationwith Automatic Regeneration Control(If Equipped)
If your vehicle is operated with significantstationary operation, low speed drivecycles less than 25 mph (40 km/h), shortdrive cycles, drive time less than 15 minutesor the vehicle does not fully warm up,passive and active regeneration may notsufficiently clean the diesel particulatefilter system. You can switch off automaticregeneration until better driving conditionsare available, for example steady highspeed driving. You can then switchautomatic regeneration back on to cleanthe diesel particulate filter.
Switching Automatic RegenerationControl On and Off
To switch operator commandedregeneration on and off, use theinformation display control on the steeringwheel. See General Information (page111). Scroll to the exhaust cleaningmessage and then select Y or N to switchit On or Off.
How to Interrupt or Cancel OperatorCommanded Regeneration
If you need to cancel the operatorcommanded regeneration, pressing thebrake, accelerator or switching the engineoff stops the procedure. Depending on theamount of time you allowed the operatorcommanded regeneration to operate, sootmay not have had sufficient time to be fullyeliminated, but the exhaust system andexhaust gas may still be hot. If you shut
your vehicle off during operatorcommanded regeneration, you may noticeturbo flutter. This is a normal consequencecaused by shutting off a diesel engineduring boosted operation and is considerednormal.
Filter Service and Maintenance
Over time, a slight amount of ash buildsup in the diesel particulate filter, which isnot removed during the regenerationprocess. The filter may need to be removedfor ash cleaning at approximately120,000 mi (190,000 km) or it may needto be replaced with a new orremanufactured part. Actual mileagevaries depending on engine and vehicleoperating conditions. The filter may needto be replaced with a new orremanufactured part at approximately250,000 mi (400,000 km). Actualmileage varies depending on engine andvehicle operating conditions.
If filter service is required, theengine control system warninglamp illuminates in theinformation display.
If there are any issues with thediesel particulate filter system,the engine control systemwarning lamp and a serviceengine soon warning lampilluminate to inform you thatyour vehicle requires service. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.

Resonator and Tailpipe AssemblyMaintenance
Aftermarket devices or modifications tothe exhaust system may reduce theeffectiveness of the exhaust system aswell as cause damage to the exhaustsystem or engine. This may also degradevehicle performance and could lead toengine damage that may not be coveredby the vehicle Warranty.
Emission Control System Laws
WARNING
Do not remove or alter the originalequipment floor covering orinsulation between it and the metalfloor of the vehicle. The floor covering andinsulation protect occupants of the vehiclefrom the engine and exhaust system heatand noise. On vehicles with no originalequipment floor covering insulation, do notcarry passengers in a manner that permitsprolonged skin contact with the metalfloor. Failure to follow these instructionsmay result in fire or personal injury.
In the United States, federal law andcertain state laws prohibit removing orrendering the emission control systeminoperative. Similar federal or provinciallaws may apply in Canada. We do notrecommend any vehicle modificationwithout determining applicable law.
Tampering with emissionscontrol system, including relatedsensors or the diesel exhaustfluid injection system can result in reducedengine power and the service engine soonwarning lamp illuminating in theinformation display.
Tampering with a Noise ControlSystem
Federal law prohibits the following acts orthe causing thereof:
•The removal or rendering inoperativeby any person other than for purposesof maintenance, repair or replacementof any device or element of designincorporated into any new vehicle forthe purpose of noise control prior to itssale or delivery to the ultimatepurchaser or while it is in use.
•The use of the vehicle after such deviceor element of design has been removedor rendered inoperative by any person.
Among those acts, which the United StatesEnvironmental Protection Agency maypresume to constitute tampering are theacts listed below:
•Removal of hood blanket, fender apronabsorbers, fender apron barriers,underbody noise shields or acousticallyabsorptive material.
•Tampering or rendering inoperative theengine speed governor, to allow enginespeed to exceed manufacturer’sspecifications.
The complexity of the diesel engine makesit so the owner is discouraged fromattempting to perform maintenance otherthan the services described in this Owner'sManual.
If you experience difficulty starting theengine, rough idling, excessive exhaustsmoke, a decrease in engine performanceor excess fuel consumption, perform thefollowing checks:
•A plugged or disconnected air inletsystem or engine air filter element.
•Water in the fuel filter and waterseparator.
•A clogged fuel filter.
•Contaminated fuel.

9. Start your vehicle.
Perform Steps 4 through 8 in reverse order,making sure to engage the hinge pivotsbetween the upper and lower halves of theshroud. Keep slight pressure in the forwarddirection as you rotate the halves together.
If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mudor Snow
Note:Do not rock your vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature ordamage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle for morethan a minute or damage to thetransmission and tires may occur, or theengine may overheat.
If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow, youmay rock it out by shifting between forwardand reverse gears, stopping between shiftsin a steady pattern. Press lightly on theaccelerator in each gear.
POWER TAKE-OFF
WARNING
Use of auxiliary equipment thatexceeds the maximum PowerTake-Off (PTO) load specified in theFord Truck Body Builders Layout Book canadversely affect the performance of thepowertrain system. Refer to the BodyBuilders Layout Book for instructions aboutthe appropriate installation of additionalequipment.
Auxiliary equipment called power take-off,or PTO, is often added to the engine ortransmission to operate utility equipment.Examples include a wheel-lift for towtrucks, cranes, tools for construction or tireservice, and pumping fluids. PTOapplications draw auxiliary horsepowerfrom the powertrain, often while thevehicle is stationary. In this condition, thereis limited cooling air flow through theradiator and around the vehicle thatnormally occurs when a vehicle is moving.The aftermarket PTO system installer,having the most knowledge of the finalapplication, is responsible for determiningwhether additional chassis heat protectionor powertrain cooling is required, andalerting the user to the safe and properoperation.
