Exiting Four-wheel-down Towing
To exit four-wheel-down towing and returnthe transfer case to its 2H position:
1.With your vehicle still properly securedto the tow vehicle, put the ignition inthe on position, but do not start theengine. If your vehicle has an ignitionkey, turn the key to on. If your vehiclehas intelligent access, press the engineSTART/STOP button twice withoutpressing the brake pedal.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3.Shift the transmission out of N and intoany gear.
4. Release the brake pedal.
Note:If completed successfully, theinstrument cluster displays 4X2, andNEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.
Note:If the indicator light and message donot display, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts out of its neutralposition. This is normal.
Note:If SHIFT DELAY PULL FORWARDdisplays in the instrument cluster, transfercase gear tooth blockage is present. See theinstructions after this section.
5. Apply the parking brake, and thendisconnect the vehicle from the towvehicle.
6. Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift the transmission toposition D to make sure the transfercase is out of position N.
7. If the transfer case does notsuccessfully shift out of position N, setthe parking brake until you can haveyour vehicle serviced.
Resolving the SHIFT DELAY PULLFORWARD Message
If the instrument cluster displays SHIFTDELAY PULL FORWARD perform thefollowing:
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2. Put the transmission into position N,and then start the engine.
3. With the engine running, shift thetransmission to position D and let thevehicle roll forward, up to 3 feet (1meter). You may hear an audible noiseas the transfer case shifts out of itsneutral position. This is normal.
4. Make sure the instrument clusterdisplays NEUTRAL TOW DISABLED.

Roadside Assistance limits fueldelivery service to two no-chargeoccurrences within a 12-month period.
•Winch out — available within 100 ft(30.5 m) of a paved or countymaintained road, no recoveries.
•Towing — independent servicecontractors, if not prohibited by state,local or municipal law, shall tow Fordeligible vehicles to an authorized dealerwithin 35 mi (56 km) of thedisablement location or to the nearest
authorized dealer. If a memberrequests a tow to an authorized dealerthat is more than 35 mi (56 km) fromthe disablement location, the membershall be responsible for any mileagecosts in excess of 35 mi (56 km).
Roadside Assistance includes up to $200for a towed trailer if the disabled eligiblevehicle requires service at the nearestauthorized dealer. If the towing vehicle isoperational but the trailer is not, then thetrailer does not qualify for any roadsideservices.

•Try to repair the dissimilar spare tire.
Use of one of the dissimilar spare tireslisted above at any one wheel location canlead to impairment of the following:
•Handling, stability and brakingperformance.
•Comfort and noise.
•Ground clearance and parking at curbs.
•Winter weather driving capability.
•Wet weather driving capability.
•All-wheel driving capability.
3.Full-size dissimilar spare withoutlabel on wheel
When driving with the full-size dissimilarspare wheel and tire assembly, do not:
•Exceed 70 mph (113 km/h).
•Use more than one dissimilar sparewheel and tire assembly at a time.
•Use commercial car washingequipment.
•Use snow chains on the end of thevehicle with the dissimilar spare wheeland tire assembly.
The usage of a full-size dissimilar sparewheel and tire assembly can lead toimpairment of the following:
•Handling, stability and brakingperformance.
•Comfort and noise.
•Ground clearance and parking at curbs.
•Winter weather driving capability.
•Wet weather driving capability.
•All-wheel driving capability.
When driving with the full-size dissimilarspare wheel and tire assembly additionalcaution should be given to:
•Towing a trailer.
•Driving vehicles equipped with acamper body.
•Driving vehicles with a load on thecargo rack.
Drive cautiously when using a full-sizedissimilar spare wheel and tire assemblyand seek service as soon as possible.
Location of the Spare Tire andTools
The spare tire is located under the vehicle,just forward of the rear bumper. The jack,jack handle and lug wrench are located inthe following locations:

5. Remove the jack and fully tighten thelug nuts in the order shown. SeeTechnical Specifications (page 302).
Stowing the Flat or Spare Tire
1.Lay the tire on the ground, near the rearof the vehicle, with the valve stem sidefacing up.
2. Slide the wheel partially under thevehicle and install the retainer throughthe wheel center. If equipped, you mayhave to remove the wheel center capprior to pushing the retainer throughthe center of the wheel. To remove thecenter cap, press it off with the jacktool from the inner side of the wheel.Pull on the cable to align thecomponents at the end of the cable.
3. Assemble the jack handle and winchextension, then insert the winchextension through the access holebehind the third row seat and engagethe winch.
4. Turn the jack handle clockwise untilthe tire is raised to its stowed positionunderneath the vehicle. The wrenchwill become harder to turn and thespare tire winch will rachet or slip whenthe tire is raised to maximum tightness.A clicking sound will be heard from thewinch indicating that the tire is properlystowed.
5. Disassembly the jack tool and winchextension and snap them back into thetool tray.
6. Reinstall the jack bag properly aroundthe jack and tool assembly tray, makingsure the strap is fastened.
7. Close the access hole with the rubberplug.
8. Reinstall the tray into the vehicle andsecure it with the wing nut.

Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mountingsurfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while your vehicleis in motion, resulting in loss of vehicle control, personal injury or death.
