Lighting Features
Entry Lighting
Some exterior lamps and the interiorlamps turn on briefly at night, or in
areas with limited lighting, whenK
is pressed on the Remote KeylessEntry (RKE) transmitter. When adoor is opened, the interior lampscome on if the dome lamp control isin the DOOR position. After about30 seconds the exterior lamps turnoff. Entry lighting can be disabledmanually by changing the ignitionout of the OFF position, or by
pressing the RKE transmitterQ
button.
This feature can be changed. See“Ve h i c l e L o c a t o r L i g h t s”underVehicle Personalization0160.
Exit Lighting
Some exterior lamps and the interiorlamps come on at night, or in areaswith limited lighting when the key isremoved from the ignition. Theexterior and interior lamps remainon for a set amount of time and then
automatically turn off. The interiorlamps do not come on if the domelamp control is in the Off position.
The exterior lamps turn offimmediately by turning the exteriorlamps control off.
This feature can be changed. SeeVehicle Personalization0160.
Battery Load
Management
The vehicle has Electric PowerManagement (EPM), whichestimates the battery's temperatureand state of charge. It then adjuststhe voltage for best performanceand extended life of the battery.
When the battery's state of chargeis low, the voltage is raised slightlyto quickly bring the charge back up.When the state of charge is high,the voltage is lowered slightly toprevent overcharging. The voltmetergauge or the voltage display on theDriver Information Center (DIC),if equipped, may show the voltage
moving up or down. This is normal.If there is a problem, an alert will bedisplayed.
The battery can be discharged atidle if the electrical loads are veryhigh. This is true for all vehicles.This is because the generator(alternator) may not be spinning fastenough at idle to produce all thepower that is needed for very highelectrical loads.
Ahighelectricalloadoccurswhenseveral of the following are on, suchas: headlamps, high beams, foglamps, rear window defogger,climate control fan at high speed,heated seats, engine cooling fans,trailer loads, and loads plugged intoaccessory power outlets.
EPM works to prevent excessivedischarge of the battery. It does thisby balancing the generator's outputand the vehicle's electrical needs.It can increase engine idle speed togenerate more power, wheneverneeded. It can temporarily reducethe power demands of someaccessories.

Normally, these actions occur insteps or levels, without beingnoticeable. In rare cases at thehighest levels of corrective action,this action may be noticeable to thedriver. If so, a DIC message mightbe displayed and it is recommendedthat the driver reduce the electricalloads as much as possible. SeeBattery Voltage and ChargingMessages0150.
Battery Power Protection
This feature shuts off the dome andreading lamps, if they are left on formore than 10 minutes after theignition is turned off. The cargolamp shuts off after 20 minutes. Thisprevents the battery fromrunning down.

There may be problems withoperation and function in thefollowing situations:
.When connecting a device withamorerecentversionofthefirmware installed than issupported by the infotainmentsystem.
.When connecting a device onwhich firmware from otherproviders is installed.
To c o n n e c t a n d c o n t r o l a d e v i c e :
1. Connect one end of thestandard USB cable to thedevice's dock connector.
2. Connect the other end to aUSB port in the center console.SeeCenter ConsoleStorage011 6.
3. Press MEDIA to select thesource.
The music information displays onthe radio’sdisplayandbeginsplaying through the vehicle’saudiosystem.
The device battery rechargesautomatically while the vehicle is on.When the vehicle is off while adevice is connected using the USBcable, the device battery stopscharging and the device willautomatically turn off.
If the device is an unsupportedmodel, it can still be listened to inthe vehicle by connecting to theauxiliary input jack using a standard3.5 mm (1/8 in) stereo cable.

The iPod/iPhone charges while it isconnected to the vehicle if thevehicle is in ACC/ACCESSORY orON/RUN. SeeIgnition Positions0268.Whenthevehicleisturnedoff, the iPod/iPhone automaticallypowers off and will not charge ordraw power from the vehicle'sbattery.

Audio System Information
The infotainment system can playthe music files contained in the USBstorage device or iPod/iPhoneproducts.
Using MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV Files
.Music files with .mp3, .wma,.ogg, and .wav file nameextensions can be played.
.MP3 files that can be played: Bitrate: 8 kbps to 320 kbps.Sampling frequency: 48 kHz,44.1 kHz, 32 kHz, 24 kHz,22.05 kHz, and 16 kHz.
.Files with a bit rate above128 kbps will result in higherquality sound.
.ID3 Tag information for MP3files, such as the album nameand the artist, can be played.
.To d i s p l a y a l b u m t i t l e , t r a c k t i t l e ,and artist information, the fileshould be compatible with theID3 Tag V1 and V2 formats.
Using USB Storage Devices andiPod/iPhone
.Use a USB or flash memory typestorage device. Do not connectusing a USB adaptor.
.Do not connect and reconnectthe USB device repeatedly in ashort time, as this may causestatic electricity and problemsusing the device.
.Use a USB device with a metalconnecting terminal.

Snow can trap engine exhaust
under the vehicle. This may
cause exhaust gases to get
inside. Engine exhaust contains
carbon monoxide (CO), which
cannot be seen or smelled. It can
cause unconsciousness and even
death.
If the vehicle is stuck in snow:
.Clear snow from the base ofthe vehicle, especially anyblocking the exhaust pipe.
.Open a window about 5 cm(2 in) on the vehicle sidethat is away from the wind,to bring in fresh air.
.Fully open the air outlets onor under the instrumentpanel.
.Adjust the climate controlsystem to circulate the airinside the vehicle and set

To s a v e f u e l , r u n t h e e n g i n e f o rshort periods to warm the vehicleand then shut the engine off andpartially close the window. Movingabout to keep warm also helps.
If it takes time for help to arrive,when running the engine, push theaccelerator pedal slightly so theengine runs faster than the idlespeed. This keeps the batterycharged to restart the vehicle and tosignal for help with the headlamps.Do this as little as possible, tosave fuel.
If the Vehicle Is Stuck
Slowly and cautiously spin thewheels to free the vehicle whenstuck in sand, mud, ice, or snow.See“Rocking the Vehicle to Get ItOut”later in this section.
The Traction Control System (TCS)can often help to free a stuckvehicle. SeeTr a c t i o n C o n t r o l /Electronic Stability Control0295.If TCS cannot free the vehicle, see“Rocking the Vehicle to Get it Out”following.

If the vehicle's tires spin at high
speed, they can explode, and you
or others could be injured. The
vehicle can overheat, causing an
engine compartment fire or other
damage. Spin the wheels as little
as possible and avoid going
above 56 km/h (35 mph).

firmly apply the brakes andsteer the vehicle to a safelocation.
3. Come to a complete stop. Shiftto P (Park) with an automatictransmission, or Neutral with amanual transmission. Turn theignition to LOCK/OFF.
4. Set the parking brake. SeeParking Brake0293.

Turning off the vehicle while
moving may cause loss of power
assist in the brake and steering
systems and disable the airbags.
While driving, only shut the
vehicle off in an emergency.
If the vehicle cannot be pulled over,and must be shut off while driving,turn the ignition to ACC/ACCESSORY.
On vehicles with an automatictransmission, the shift lever must bein P (Park) to turn the ignition switchto LOCK/OFF.
Caution
Using a tool to force the key to
turn in the ignition could cause
damage to the switch or break the
key. Use the correct key, make
sure it is all the way in, and turn it
only with your hand. If the key
cannot be turned by hand, see
your dealer.
1(ACC/ACCESSORY):Thisposition lets things like the radioand the windshield wipers operatewhile the engine is off. It alsounlocks the steering wheel. Use thisposition if the vehicle must bepushed or towed.
2(ON/RUN):This position can beused to operate the electricalaccessories and to display someinstrument cluster warning andindicator lights. This position canalso be used for service anddiagnostics, and to verify the properoperation of the malfunctionindicator lamp as may be requiredfor emission inspection purposes.The switch stays in this position
when the engine is running. Thetransmission is also unlocked in thisposition on automatic transmissionvehicles.
If the key is left in the ACC/ACCESSORY or ON/RUN positionwith the engine off, the battery couldbe drained. The vehicle may notstart if the battery is allowed to drainfor an extended period of time.
3(START):This is the position thatstarts the engine. When the enginestarts, release the key. The ignitionswitch returns to ON/RUN fordriving.
Awarningtonewillsoundwhenthedriver door is opened, the ignition isin ACC/ACCESSORY or LOCK/OFF, and the key is in the ignition.

Caution
If the steering wheel is turned
until it reaches the end of its
travel, and is held in that position
while starting the vehicle, damage
may occur to the power steering
system and there may be loss of
power steering assist.
Place the transmission in theproper gear.
Automatic Transmission
Move the shift lever to P (Park) orN(Neutral). To restart the enginewhen the vehicle is already moving,use N (Neutral) only.
Caution
Do not try to shift to P (Park) if the
vehicle is moving. If you do, you
could damage the transmission.
Shift to P (Park) only when the
vehicle is stopped.
Manual Transmission
The shift lever should be in Neutraland the parking brake engaged.Hold the clutch pedal down to thefloor and start the engine.
Starting Procedure
1. With your foot off theaccelerator pedal, turn theignition key to START. Whenthe engine starts, let go of thekey. The idle speed will godown as the engine gets warm.Do not race the engineimmediately after starting it.
Operate the engine andtransmission gently to allow theoil to warm up and lubricate allmoving parts.
When the low fuel warning lightis on and the FUEL LEVELLOW message is displayed inthe Driver Information Center(DIC), hold the ignition switchin the START position tocontinue engine cranking.
Caution
Cranking the engine for long
periods of time, by returning the
ignition to the START position
immediately after cranking has
ended, can overheat and damage
the cranking motor, and drain the
battery. Wait at least 15 seconds
between each try, to let the
cranking motor cool down.
2. If the engine does not startafter five to 10 seconds,especially in very cold weather(below✓18 °C or 0 °F), it couldbe flooded with too much

turned from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF,the windows and sunroof continueto work up to 10 minutes or until anydoor is opened. The radio continuesto work for up to 10 minutes or untilthe driver door is opened.
Accessory Power Outlets (APOs)
The vehicle may have AccessoryPower Outlets (APOs) in severallocations. SeePower Outlets0124.
The APOs in the console or centerseat position are powered byRetained Accessory Power (RAP).They will continue to work for up to10 minutes after the key is turnedfrom ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, or untilthe driver door is opened.
The APOs on the center stack comefrom the factory powered directlyfrom the vehicle battery, and supplyaccessory power at all times,regardless of ignition key position.
If electronic items are left pluggedinto these APOs for long periods oftime with the vehicle off, the vehiclebattery could be drained. Thevehicle may not start if the battery isallowed to drain for an extendedperiod of time.
Engine Coolant Heater
The engine heater can provideeasier starting and better fueleconomy during engine warm-up incold weather conditions at or below✓18 °C (0 °F). Vehicles with anengine heater should be plugged inat least four hours before starting.An internal thermostat in theplug-end of the cord may exist,which will prevent engine coolantheater operation at temperaturesabove✓18 °C (0 °F).

To Use the Engine Coolant
Heater
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and unwrap theelectrical cord. The cord issecured to the driver sidefender with a clip, next to theengine compartment fuseblock. Carefully remove thewire tie that bundles theelectrical plug. Do not cut theelectrical cord.
Check the heater cord fordamage. If it is damaged, donot use it. See your dealer forareplacement.Inspectthecord for damage yearly.
3. Plug the cord into a normal,grounded 110-volt AC outlet.
