Roof rack
The roof rack must only be secured in the posi
tioning bolt area.
Fig . SO Mount ing locat ions fo r roof rac k
If luggage or cargo is to be carried on the roof,
you must observe the following:
- Yo ur vehicle has ae rodynami c rain channels
molded in to the roof . T h is is why convent ional
roo f luggage racks ca nnot be used . We recom
mend using roof rails from the Aud i Genu ine
Accessories program.
- These roof rai ls are the bas is for a complete
roof rack system . For safety reasons, some ad
ditional attachments are necessary to transport luggage, bicycles, surf boards, skis and small
boats safely . All these components are availa
ble at yo ur authorized Aud i dealer .
- The permitted roof load for your veh icle is 165
lbs (75 kg) . The roof load is a combination of
the weight of the carrier system and the cargo .
- When using roof rack systems with a lower load
capacity, you cannot use the maximum permis
s ible roof load . In this case, the roof rack can
o nly be loaded to the weight lim it given in the
i nstallation guide.
Inst allation
When installing the support feet, make sure they
are only placed in the positioning bolt area be
tween the side wa ll frame and the roof frame
trim ¢

soon as you push the sealing lip back from the
room frame tr im us ing t he des igna ted tool.

A WARNING
- The cargo must be secure ly attached on the
roof rack; otherw ise you increase the r isk of
an accident .
- You must u nder no circ umstances exceed
the permissible roof load, the permissible
axle loads o r the pe rm issib le overa ll we ight
of yo ur vehicle be cause this increases the
ris k of an a cc iden t.
- Please note that there is a h igher r is k of an
accident when transporting heavy objec ts or
objec ts wi th a l arge sur face on the roof r ack,
since the handling characterist ics change
due to a shift in the center of gravity or the
greater surface area exposed to the wind . So
adapt your driving and speed to the actual
conditions.
(D Note
If yo u use ot her roof l uggage rack systems or
do not install the racks as intended, any dam
age to the vehicle is not covered by the war ranty . Carefu lly follow the assembly and in
stallation instructions included with the roof
rack carrier system.
® For the sake of the environment
A roof rack is often left mounted out of con
venience even if it is no longer used. Your ve hicle w ill use more fue l due to the inc reased
wind res istance. So remove t he roof rack after
u sing it.

Airbag syste m
& WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld seat instal
led on the front passenger seat will be ser i
ously injured and can be k illed if the front air
bag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- Although the Advanced A irbag System in
you r vehicle is designed to tu rn off the front
airbag when a rea rwa rd-facing child re
straint has been insta lled on the fron t pas
senger seat, nobody can absolutely g uaran
tee that deployment is impossible in a ll con
ceivable situations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The inflating airbag w ill hit the child seat or
infant carrier w ith great force and will
smash the ch ild seat and child against the
backrest, center armrest, door, or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing ch ild re
straints on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward fac ing ch ild
seat on the front passenger seat because of
exceptional c ircumstances and the
PASSEN
G ER A IR BAG OFF,;; light does not come
on and stay on, immediately install the rear
facing child seat in a rea r seating pos ition
and have the a irbag system inspected by
yo ur Audi dealer.
& WARNING
If, i n ex cept ional circumstances, you must i n
sta ll a forward-facing chi ld restraint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing se at
has been designed and ce rtified by its man
ufacturer for use on a f ront seat with a pas
senger front and side a irbag .
- Never put the forward -facing child restraint
u p against or very near the instrument pan
el.
- Always move the front passenger seat to
the highest position in the up and down ad
justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as fa r away from the air
bag as possib le, before insta lling the for
ward-facing child restra int.

-
- lways make sure that t he safety belt upper
anchorage is behind the ch ild restraint and
not next to or in front of the child restraint
so that the safety be lt will be p roperly posi
tioned.
- Always make sure that there is noth ing o n
the front passenge r seat that will cause the
capacitive passenge r detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System tha t
the sea t is occup ied by a perso n when it is
not, or to s ignal th at it is occupie d by some
one who is heavier than the person ac tually
sitting on the seat . The presence of addi
tional objects cou ld cause the passenger
front airbag to be turned on when it should
be off, or could cause the airbag to work in a
way that is d if f erent from the way it wou ld
have worked without the object on the seat.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF "1; light comes on and stays on all the
time wheneve r the ig nitio n is swi tched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The fro nt passenge r seat in your veh icle has a lot
of ve ry important parts of the Advanced A irbag
Syste m in it. These parts incl ude the capacitive
passenger detection system, wir ing, b racke ts,
and more . The con trol uni t monitors the system
on the front passenger seat when the ignition is
switched on and turns the airbag indicator light
on when a malfunction in the one of the system
components is detected<=>
page 209. Because
the front passenger seat contains important
parts of the Adva nced A irbag System, you must
take care to p revent it from being damaged.
Damage to the seat may prevent the Advanced
A irbag Sys tem for the front passenge r seat from
do ing its job in a crash .
The front Advanced Airbag System consists
of the following:
-Crash sensors in the front of the veh icle tha t
meas ure vehicle acce le ra tion/dece le ra tion to
prov ide in formation to the Advanced A irbag
System about the sever ity of the crash .
- An elect ronic contro l unit, with integ rated
crash sensors for front and side impacts. The
Airbag syste m

flates.
- Never p lace or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cup holders, telephone brackets, or even large, bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the seat backrests.
- Such objects and accessories can become
dangerous projectiles and cause in ju ry
when the supplemental side airbag de ploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the de ployment space between them and the
airbags or allow children or other passen
gers to travel in this position.
- Always use the built-in coat hooks only for
lightweight clothing. Never leave any heavy
or sharp-edged objects in the pockets that
may interfere w it h side airbag deployment
and can cause personal i njury in an accident.
- Always prevent the side airbags from being
damaged by heavy objects knocking against
or hitting the sides of the seatbacks.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once. If the airbag has been triggered, the
system must be replaced by an author ized
Audi dealership.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to the
orig inal seat covers or to the seam in the
area of the side a irbag mod ule m ust always
be repa ired immed iate ly by an authorized
Audi dealer .
- If children are sea ted improperly, their r is k
of injury increases in the ca se of an ac ciden t
~ page 221, Child safety .
-Never attempt to modify any components of
the a irbag sys tem in any way.
- In a side collision, s ide a irbags w il l not fu nc
t ion properly if sensors cannot correct ly
measure increasi ng a ir pressure ins ide the
doo rs when air escapes through larger, un
closed openings in the door panel.
- Never drive w ith inter io r door tr im panels
removed .
- Never drive when parts have been re
moved from the inside doo r panel and the
open ings they leave have not been proper
ly closed.
218
- Never drive when loudspeakers in the
doors have been removed unless the
speaker holes have been properly closed.
- Always make certain that openings are
covered or filled if additional speakers or
other equipment is installed i n the inside
door panels.
- Always have work on the doors done by an
authorized Aud i dealer or q ualified work
shop.
Side curtain airbags
Description of side curtain airbags
The side curtain airbag system can provide sup
plemental protection to properly restrained oc
cupants.
Fig. 168 S id e curt ain airbags, driver's sid e: side curtain a ir
bag locatio n
The side curtain airbags are located on both sides
of the inter ior above the fro nt and rear side win
dows~
fig. 168. T hey are identified by the word
"AIRBAG" on the windshie ld frame and the cen
ter roof p illar .
The side curtain airbags contain features that provide ejection mitigation to help prevent veh i
cle occupants or parts of their bodies from being
completely or part ially ejected from the vehicle
interior in certain side impacts and vehicle roll
overs .
The side c urtain airbag system supplements the
safety belts and can help to reduce the risk of in
jury for occupants' heads and upper torso. The
side curtain airbag inflates in side impacts and
only when the ve hicle acceleration registered by
the control unit is high enough .
