Speed warning system
Overview
T he speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system wa rns if the driver ex­
ceeds a prev io usly stored maximum speed. A
war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehicle
speed ex ceeds t he set speed by abo ut
3 m ph
(3 km/ h). At the same time, a warni ng symbo l
appears in the display. The symbol's appearance
might be different in some models .
The speed w arning sys te m has
two warning
threshold s
that function independen tly of each
other an d that have somewhat different purpos­
es:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed war ning 1 to se t the maxim um
speed while yo u are dr iving. This setting w ill re­
main in e ffec t unti l you turn
off the ign ition, as -

su ming tha t you have not changed or reset the
setting .
T he speed wa rn ing symbol . (U SA mode ls)/ .
(Cana da mo dels) in the warn ing 1 disp lay ap­
pears when you exceed the maxim um s peed.
It
goes out when the speed falls be low the stored
max imum speed.
T he spee d warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored max imum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds . The stored max imum speed is delet ­
ed .

Speed warning 2
Stor ing warn ing 2 is recomm ended if you always
want to be reminded of a ce rtain speed, for ex­
amp le when you are traveling in a coun try tha t
ha s a genera l maximum speed limi t, or if you do
not want to e xceed a specified speed for winte r
ti res.

that the maxim um speed has been sto red suc­
cessfully.
The max imum speed remains stored until it is
changed by pressing the
I SETI button again brief­
ly or unt il it is deleted by a lengthy p ush on the
button.
Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The MMI* or the radio control unit is used to set,
change or delete warning threshold 2 .

Wa rning threshold 2 can be set in the speed
range star ting from 20 mph to 150 mph (30 km/
h to 240 km/h) . Set tings can each be ad justed in
intervals of 5 mph (10 km/h).

A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
you when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always respons ible for your speed
and the distance between your veh icle and
other veh icles .

-For reasons of safety, cruise control should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf­
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy rain and hydroplaning) -you could
have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when driving in turning lanes, highway exits
or in construction zones.
- Please note that unconsciously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the
driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road or on unpaved roads. The cruise
control is intended for use only when the ve­
hicle is being operated on paved roads, and
is not suitable for use off-road or on un­
paved roads.
- If a brake system malfunction such as over­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be switched off. The other
cruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator light
0;(1)~14 (US mod­
el)/li,I (Canadian model) is on .
(Di Tips
The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes apply automatically.
Changing speed
.,. To increase/decrease the speed in increments,
tap the lever in the
010 direction ¢ page 92,

.,. To increase/decrease the speed quickly , hold
the lever in the
010 direction until the de­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to
increase your speed, e.g. if you want to pass
someone. The speed you saved earlier will re­
sume as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
S mph
(10 km/h) for longer than S minutes, the

cruise control will be turned off temporarily. The
green symbol in the display turns white, the
saved speed is retained.
Pre-selecting speed
You con pre-select your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
.,. Turn on the ignition.
.,. Pull lever into position

.,. Press the lever in the 0 or 0 direction to in-
crease or decrease your speed.
.,. Let go of the lever to save that speed .
This function makes it possible, for example, to
save the speed you want before driving on the
highway . Once on the highway, activate the
cruise control by pulling the lever toward

is not too high for existing traffic conditions .
Otherwise you risk an accident.

Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automat ic t ransmission is cont rolled e lec­
tron ica lly . The transmission ups hifts or down ­
shifts au toma tically depending on wh ich drive
p rogram is selected. The power is transferred by
a torque converter .
When a
moderate driving styl e is used , the
t ra nsmission se lects t he most eco nomical d riving
mode.
It will then change up early an d de lay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy .
The transm iss ion switches to a spo rty mode afte r
a kic k-down or when the drive r uses a
sporty
dri ving st yle
character ized by quic k accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, freq uent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the dr iver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 98.

In the D/S position, the transmission can be op­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S . T o se lect the sport mode S, pull
t h e se lecto r lever back b rie fly. Pull ing t he leve r
ba ck aga in will selec t the normal mode D. The in­
str ument cluster d isp lay shows the selected d riv ­
ing mode.
I n the
normal mode D , th e transmission auto­
mati cally selec ts the s uitable gear ratio .
It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle spee d an d dr ivi ng
sty le.
Se lect t he
sport mode S fo r spo rty d rivi ng. The
vehicle makes f ull use of the eng ine 's power.
S hif ting may become no ticeable when acceler at­
ing . Hyb rid drive *: electric d riving is not poss ible.
When the vehicle is statio na ry o r at speeds below

mediately and wa it for the engine to slow
down to idle before selecting 0/S.

mission switches automatically to the nor­
mal mode 0 .
- If there is a power fa ilure, the selector lever
will not move o ut of the P posit ion . The

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
-
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

Introduction

Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .
This may ca use coll is ions and severe or fatal
injuries . When the vehicle enters dr ive ready

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.
(D Note
- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Starting the vehicle
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
The vehicle is started and turned off either wi th
the ign ition key <;>

same way as a conventional vehicle .
W hen start ing the veh icle, the needles in the in­
s trument clus ter move upward briefly . When the
ve hicle enters d rive ready mode, the s tatus mes­

hybrid ready appears briefly in t he instru­
ment cluster display and the needle in the power
meter points to
READY 9 page 101.
Depending on the ope ration mode of the hybrid
sys tem, there are two possible drive ready modes
after the vehicle has been started:

brake pedal when starting the vehicle .
Shift to N or P to start vehicle
This message appears if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the Nor P posi­
tions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
lfthe indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the hybrid sys­
tem . The brake booster and the power steering
may stop working. Stop the vehicle in a safe loca­
tion as soon as possible.
