"'You can re lease the switch once you are sure
that you are developing enough driving force at
the wheels by depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the r ig (vehi cle and
trai ler) and t he severity of the incline, you may
ro ll backwards as you start . You ca n prevent roll­
ing bac kwards by holding the parking brake
sw itch pulled out and accelerating -just as you
wou ld when sta rting on a hill with a conventional
hand b rake.
Emergency braking
In the even t that the conventional brake system
fails or locks .
"'In an emergency, pull the switch and cont inue
to pull it to slow your ve hicle down with the
park ing b rake .
"' As soon as you release the switch or accelerate,
the b raking process stops .
If you pull the sw itch and hold it above a speed of
about 5 mph (8 km/h), the eme rge ncy brak ing
f u nction is ini tiated . The vehicle is braked at all
four whee ls by activating th e hydrau lic brake sys­
t em. T he b rake perfo rman ce is sim ila r to making
a n emergency stop ~.&, .
In order not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mista ke, an audib le wa rn ing tone (buzz er)
sounds w hen the sw itch is p ulled . As soon as the
sw itch is rele ased, or the a cce le ra to r pedal is de­
p ressed, eme rgency bra king stops.
_& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be use d in an
emergency, w hen the normal foot brake has
failed or the bra ke peda l is obstr ucted . Using
the parking b rake to perfo rm emergency
brak ing will slow your vehicle down as if you
had made a fu ll bra ke ap plication . The laws of
physics c annot be suspended even wi th E SC
a nd i ts asso ciated componen ts (AB S, AS R,
ED S). I n corne rs and when r oad or we ather
c ondi tions are bad , a f ull bra ke ap plicat ion
can ca use the vehicle to sk id or the rea r end to
break away -ris king an accident .

Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the pa rking brake is
applied on an in cl in e that exceeds about 30%.
In this case the braking power of the pa rking
brake may
not be adequate to prevent the veh i­
cle from roll ing unin ten tionally.
Press b rake pedal to release parking brake
This dr iver message appears when the sw itch to
r elease the parking brake was pressed. The pa rk­
i ng brake can only be released if you step on the
brake pedal and at the same time p ress the
switch or you automat ica lly re lease the par king
bra ke w ith the sta rting ass is t ~
page 87 .
f pj Parking brake malfunction!
This dr iver message appears together with the
yellow
DI symbol when there is a parki ng b rake
malfunction .
Start/Stop system
Description
Applies to: vehicles wit h Start ·Stop ·System
The Sta rt -Stop-System can he lp increase f uel
economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
I n the Start -Stop -mode, the eng ine sh uts off au ­
tomat ica lly when the vehicle is sto pped, such as
at a t raff ic light. The ignition remains switched
on du ring this stop phase . The eng ine will be au­
tomat ically restarted when needed.
The last Start-Stop -System setting (on/off using
the b utton
l(A)~ I) will be restored when the igni­
tion is turned on. The L ED in t he
l(A) ~I b utton turns
o n when the Start-Stop-System is switched off
manua lly .
Ba sic requirements for the Start-Stop mode
- The driver 's door is closed.
- The drive r's sea t b elt is latched.
- The hood is closed .
- The vehicle m ust have bee n driven fas ter than
2.5 mph (4 km/h) s ince the last s top.
- A t railer is not hitched to the vehicle . .,.

Starting the engine

Starting off
.. Press and hold the brake pedal.
.. Press and hold the release button in the selec ­
tor lever handle, select the des ired selector lev­
er posit ion such as D/S and release t he button.
.. Wai t briefly until the transmission has shifted
(you w ill feel a s light movement) .

Stopping temporarily

Starting on an incline
.. Ac tivate the pa rk ing br ake .
.. With the driving gear selected, press the accel ­
erator pedal carefully. The parking brake will
re lease a utomatically if your seat belt is fas ­
tened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains, it may be useful to switch tempo­ rarily to the manual sh ift program in order to ad­
j ust the gears to the dr iv ing cond it ions by hand
¢ page 98 .
On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too m uch stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
A WARNING
- Unintended vehicle moveme nt can cause se­
rious injury .
- Never leave your veh icle with the engine
r u nning while in gear . If you mus t leave
your veh icle when the engine is running, ac­
tiva te t he pa rking bra ke and move the selec­
t o r lever to P .
- P owe r is still transmitted to the wheels
w hen t he engine is running at idle . To pre­
vent the vehi cle from "creeping", yo u m ust
keep your foot on the brake when the en ­
gine is running and the se lector lever is in 0/
Sor R or "tiptronic" mode is se lected .
- Do not press the acce le ra tor pedal when
changing t he se lector lever posit ion while
the vehicle is stat ionary and the engine is
running.
- Never shift into R or P whi le driving.
- Before driving down a s teep slope, reduce
your spee d and sh ift into a lower gear with
"t i pt ronic" .

-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the b rake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always ho ld it in
place wi th the brake pedal o r parking brake.
- Never hold the veh icle on an incl ine with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicato r lamp

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, neve r
have any driving pos ition engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has secure ly engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 217. Otherw ise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
ho ld the vehicle in place by press ing the ac­
ce lerator pedal while a driv ing gear is se­
l ected. T his can cause the t ransmission to
ove rheat and can damage it. Activate the
parking b rake or press the b rake peda l to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling.
- Al low ing the ve hicl e to ro ll when the eng ine
i s s topped and the se lector lever is in
N w ill
damage the transmission beca use it is not
l ubricated under those ci rcumstances.
(D Tips
F or safety reasons, the parking b rake is re­
leased au tomatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
D riv ing
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
T he transmission automat ically selects a gear
that is su itable for the incline . Hill descent con­
t ro l tries to maintain t he speed ach ieved at the
t ime of b raking, w ith in phys ica l and te chnical
l imita tions.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent cont rol switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the acce lerator pedal.
When the speed is set in the cru ise control sys­
tem ¢
page 92, hill descent control is also acti­
vated.
,&. WARNING
H ill descent cont rol cannot over come physical
limitat ions, so it may not be able to ma intain
a constant speed under all conditions. A lways
be ready to app ly the brakes.

Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.

Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down­
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im ­
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .
I f t he coolan t temperature warn ing light i n the

the road, stop and let the engine
idle for about
two minutes to prevent heat bu ild-up .
A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif ­
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful­
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be ­
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel­ erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.
(D Tips
- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri­
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex­
tra load ¢

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:

.,. Have someone place cho cks under bot h the ve­
hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .
.,. App ly the parking brake .
.,. Move the selector lever to P .
When restarting after parking :
.,. App ly the foot brake .
.,. Start the eng ine .
.,. Move the se lector lever to D/S.

Checking and Filling
- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wa it until no steam or coolant can be
seen or hea rd before carefully ope ning t he
hood.
Closing the engine hood

- When you close the engine hood, c heck it to

gaged . The hood should be flush with the

not secured prope rly , stop at once and close
it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
Whenever you must pe rfo rm any work in the
eng ine compa rtment , for e xample check ing and
fill ing diffe rent fluids, the re is a ris k of injury,
burns and acciden ts. To pre vent personal injur y
always ob serve the fo llowing WARNINGS . The
eng ine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard ­

Checking and Filling
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com­
ponents will burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be
seen or heard before carefully opening the
hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm. The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system .
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to P (Park).

- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting hot parts . Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

Filling a tire
.,. Shake the bottle thoroughly before fi lling.
.,. Screw the accompanying filling hose complete­
ly onto the bottle. This breaks through the foil
seal automatically at the connection .
.,. Remove the valve cap from the tire valve and
unscrew the valve insert using the accompany­
ing valve insert tool

.,. Lay the valve insert on a clean surface .
.,. Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose
and connect the hose to the tire valve .
.,. Hold the bottle with the bottom facing upward
and empty the entire contents into the tire .
.,. Then pull out the hose and screw the valve in­
sert tightly back into the tire valve.

Inflating a tire
.,. Screw the filling hose for the compressor onto
the tire valve and insert the connector into the
cigarette lighter.
.. Inflate the tire to between 29 PSI (200 kPA)
and 36 PSI (250 kPA) and read the pressure on
the gauge .
.,. If this tire pressure is not reached, drive your
veh icle approximately 33
ft (10 meters) for ­
ward or backward so that the sealant can be re­
distr ibuted inside the tire. If at this time the re­
qui red air press ure st ill cannot be reached, the
tire is too badly damaged and cannot be re­
pa ired with the tire sealant .
Final inspection
.,. Stop the vehicle after dr iv ing for about 10 mi­
nutes and check the tire pressure.
.,. If the tire pressure is lower than 19 PSI
(130 kPA), then the t ire is too severely dam­
aged . Do not continue driving . Please seek pro­
fessional ass istance .
&_ WARNING
- Turn on the emergency flashers if you have a
flat tire while in moving traffic. This is for
your protection and the for the safety of
other drivers.
- Take care to move all of the passengers to a
safe place (behind a guard rail for example) .
- Read and follow the manufacturer's safety
precaut ions on the compressor and in the
instructions on the bottle of sealant!
- If a tire pressure of 29 PSI (200 kPA) cannot
reached after inflating for 12 minutes, then
the tir e is too severely damaged. Do not
continue driving.
- Obta in qualified help if it is not possible to
pe rform the repair with the tire sealant .
- If the tire pressure is less than 19 PSI
(130 kPA) after 10 minu tes of driv ing, then
the tire is too severely damaged . Do not
con tinue driv ing. Seek profess ional assis­
ta nce.
