Lamp (MIL) II will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust your speed to suit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weather conditions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed.
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim­
ply makes sure these features and components
are working properly. The Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
whenever the veh icle is driven.
-
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repair has been detected, this will
appear in the instrument cluster display. You will
also hear an audib le warning tone . The displays
are color coded in eit he r red or yellow depending
on their level of priority.
A red symbol means
Danger, a yellow symbol in­
d icates
Warning . In certain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the driver appea r in addition to
the red and yellow symbols .
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Control will automatically per­
form a test each time you switch on the ignition. W ith the selector lever in P or N, the fo llowing
message appears in the display:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R, D, etc.), the message will disappear and the Au­
to-Check function is displayed.
If there is a malfunct ion, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds after you
start the vehicle. At the same time you will hear a
warn ing tone.

Driver information messages are shown in the in­
strument cluster display in addition to symbols.

For example, if the transmission selector lever is
not in the P position when the engine is tu rned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors
do not lock if lever is not in P.
The ign ition key can only be removed with these­
lector in this position. This and other messages
are brought up if a function cannot be carried
out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the disp lay, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol for a problem with en­
gine o il pressure . appears in the display. The
follow ing message appears:
Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
The driver message in the display goes out after
about 5 seconds. The driver message can be dis­ played again by briefly pressing the
I SETI button

Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol

The driver message disappears after a few sec­

If the . symbo l in the instr um ent panel display
flashes, then the re is a malfunction in the alter­
nator or the vehicle electronics . A warning to the
driver will appear, too . The driver warning goes
out after about 5 seconds, but it can be brought
up at any t ime by pressing the
!SET ! button aga in.
Usually, you can still drive to the next dea lership .
T urn off all but the most necessary e lectrica l con­
sumers, since these drain the vehicle's battery.
(D Note
If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instrument
panel during the trip

have to stop immediately and turn off the en­
gine. The coolant pump is not working any­
more -danger of damage to the engine!
BRAKE/C(D) Brake system malfunction
A ma/function in the brake system must be re­
paired as soon as possible .
If the warning/indicator light 11111 (USA mod­
els) . (Canada models) in the instrument clus­
ter flashes, there is a brake system malfunction.
A driver message appears as well to explain the
malfu nction in more detail. The driver wa rning
goes out after about 5 seconds, but it can be
brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI but-

't=?: Engine oil pressure malfunction
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair. Driving with a
low oil pressure indication is likely to cause se­
vere engine damage .
If the . symbol on the display flashes, the en ­
g ine oi l pressure is too low. A d river message ap ­
pears as well to explain t he malfunction in mo re
deta il. Th e d river war ning goes ou t afte r abo ut 5
s econds, but it can be b ro u gh t up at any time by
p ressing the
ISET I button again.

@ Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

ing column lock, the steering cannot be un­
locked.

If there is a malfunct ion in the electronic ignition
lock, the ignition cannot be turned
off . Drive im­
mediately to an authorized service facility to have
the cause of the malfunction corrected.
O n ve hicles with Convenience key* , the eng ine
should not be switched
off using the Start/Stop
button because the engine cannot be started
again after the ignition has been switched
off.

if the master key is removed from the vehicle
with the eng ine running . It is intended to rem ind

cannot switch off the ignition after stopping the
engine and you a lso cannot start the engine
aga in . You also cannot lock the veh icle from the
ou ts ide .

If the symbol illum inates , the light sensor has
failed . For safety reasons the low beams are
tu rned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO .
However, yo u can cont inue to turn t he lig hts on
and off us ing the light switch. In the case of a de ­
fect in the rain sensor, the windshield wipe r lever
functions are still available. Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as poss ible by an author­
i z ed Audi dealer.

When the II symbol illum inates, you can a lter
your d riving style to assist the fi lter self-cleaning
process . Dr ive for approx imately 15 minutes with
the selector leve r in the S position at a minimum
speed of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an engine speed
of approximate ly 2,000 RPM. The temperature
increase that will result from this can burn off
the soot in the filter. The symbol will switch off
when the clean ing is successful. After a success­
ful cleaning, there is no need to br ing the car to
a n author ized dealer or qualified workshop be­
cause this is part of no rmal veh icle operat ion.
If the symbol
II does not switch off, see your
author ized dealer or other qualif ied workshop to
have the prob lem corrected.

The emergency key is not intended for constant
use . It should only be used in an emergency , for
example, in place of the ignition key

carry it on your key ring or store it in the vehicle.
Key replacement

Be sure to bring all your keys with you.
Number of keys
You can inquire about the number of assigned
keys to your vehicle
Q page 9. This allows you to
make sure you have received all of the keys when
you purchase a used vehicle. Depending on the
vehicle equipment level, this function may also
be performed in the MMI*. To do this, select:

and tell you about the work your veh icle needs.
This applies also to vehicles with Convenience key* .
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" master key. When the ignition is turned off or when the
vehicle is locked, personal convenience settings
for the following systems are stored and as­
signed to the remote master key.
- Climate control
- Central locking system
- Seat memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Audi side assist*
- Audi drive select*
The stored settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open the
doors or when you turn on the ignition.
A WARNING

- Do not leave your vehicle unattended with
the key in the ignition lock . Entry by unau­
thorized persons could endanger you or re­
sult in theft or damage the vehicle . Always
lock all doors and take the key .
- Do not leave children unattended in the ve­
hicle, especially with access to vehicle keys.
Unguarded access to the keys provides chil­
dren the opportunity to start the engine
and/or activate vehicle systems such as the
power windows etc. Unsupervised operation
of any vehicle system by children can result
in serious injury.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherwise the steering column
lock could suddenly engage -causing the
risk of an accident.

-The operation of the remote control key can
be temporarily disrupted by interference
from transmitters in the vicinity of the .,.

vehicle working in the same frequency range
(e .g . a cell phone, rad io equipment) .
- If you open the dr iver's door with the key
l eft in the ignition lock, a chime will sound .
This is your reminder to remove the key and
l ock the door.

provides information about different condit io ns.
• The check light comes on b riefly once when a
button is pressed, and during an "i nq ui ry" by
the conven ience key system .
• If the check light does not come on, the battery
is dead and has to be replaced. In addition,
when the batt ery is dead the

pears in the instrument cl uster display as well
as the message:

• Pull the mechanica l key out of the master key

battery holder and at the same time pull the
battery holder out of the master key in the di­
rection of the arrow .
• Install the new battery CR 2032 with the "+"
s ign facing down .
• Pu sh the battery holder carefully into the mas ­
ter key.

Dispose of dead bat teries properly so as not
