Lamp (MIL) II will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust your speed to suit prevailing road, traf
fic and weather conditions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed.
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim
ply makes sure these features and components
are working properly. The Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
whenever the veh icle is driven.
-
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repair has been detected, this will
appear in the instrument cluster display. You will
also hear an audib le warning tone . The displays
are color coded in eit he r red or yellow depending
on their level of priority.
A red symbol means

tion message for the driver appea r in addition to
the red and yellow symbols .
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Control will automatically per
form a test each time you switch on the ignition. W ith the selector lever in P or N, the fo llowing
message appears in the display:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R, D, etc.), the message will disappear and the Au
to-Check function is displayed.
If there is a malfunct ion, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds after you
start the vehicle. At the same time you will hear a
warn ing tone.

For example, if the transmission selector lever is
not in the P position when the engine is tu rned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors
do not lock if lever is not in P.
The ign ition key can only be removed with these
lector in this position. This and other messages
are brought up if a function cannot be carried
out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the disp lay, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol for a problem with en
gine o il pressure . appears in the display. The
follow ing message appears:
Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
The driver message in the display goes out after
about 5 seconds. The driver message can be dis played again by briefly pressing the
I SETI button

If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol

If the . symbo l in the instr um ent panel display
flashes, then the re is a malfunction in the alter
nator or the vehicle electronics . A warning to the
driver will appear, too . The driver warning goes
out after about 5 seconds, but it can be brought
up at any t ime by pressing the
!SET ! button aga in.
Usually, you can still drive to the next dea lership .
T urn off all but the most necessary e lectrica l con
sumers, since these drain the vehicle's battery.

If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instrument
panel during the trip

have to stop immediately and turn off the en
gine. The coolant pump is not working any
more -danger of damage to the engine!
BRAKE/C(D) Brake system malfunction
A ma/function in the brake system must be re
paired as soon as possible .
If the warning/indicator light 11111 (USA mod
els) . (Canada models) in the instrument clus
ter flashes, there is a brake system malfunction.
A driver message appears as well to explain the
malfu nction in more detail. The driver wa rning
goes out after about 5 seconds, but it can be
brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI but-

ing/indicator light illuminates together with the
brake system malfunction warn ing/ indicator

- Driving with low brake fl uid is a safety haz
ar d. Stop the car and get professional ass is

- If the .. (USA models) . (Canada mod
els) brake system i ndic ator lig ht tu rns on to
ge ther wit h the ABS and ES C i ndi ca to r
ligh ts, the ABS/ ESC regula ting func tion may
have failed . Functions that stab ilize the ve
hicle a re no longe r available. This could

cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
r isk of sliding. Drive caref ully to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the malfunct io n correct
ed.
- L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system mu st
be repaired as soon as possible.

A WARNING ~
- If you r vehicle should break down fo r me-
chan ica l or othe r reasons, park at a safe dis
tance from mov ing traffic, turn off the en
gine and turn on the hazard warning lights
¢ page 51, Emergency flashers.
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment -you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coo lant escaping .
- The engine compartment of any veh icle is a
dangerous area. Before you perfo rm any
work i n the engine compartment, turn of
t he engine and allow i t to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers

failed . For safety reasons the low beams are
tu rned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO .
However, yo u can cont inue to turn t he lig hts on

fect in the rain sensor, the windshield wipe r lever
functions are still available. Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as poss ible by an author
i z ed Audi dealer.

when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when driving around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that any
thing you may have placed in the center con
sole or other storage locations cannot fall out into the footwells. In case of sudden
braking you would not be able to brake or
accelerate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have hung
up must not interfere with the driver's view.
The coat hooks are designed only for light
we ight cloth ing. Never hang any clothing
with hard, pointed or heavy objects in the
pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the
airbag is deployed -these objects could in
jure any passengers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove comportment is illuminated and can
be locked.

There are holders for a pen and a pad of paper in
the glove compartment lid.
On the right side in the glove compartment is a holder with the key body into which the emergen
cy key must be clipped to be able to start the ve
hicle.
Seats and storage
A WARNING
-To reduce the risk of personal injury in an acci-
dent or sudden stop, always keep the glove
compartment closed while driving.
Cooling box in glove compartment
The cooling box works only when the air-condi
tioning is in cooling mode.

wheel.

face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag can
not provide as much protect io n in an acc i
dent. Always ma ke sure that the steer ing
wheel is aligned with you r chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o' clock posi
tions to reduce the risk of pe rso nal inju ry if
the dr iver's a irbag dep loys .
- Never ho ld the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'cl ock position or wi th you r hands inside
the stee rin g wheel rim or on t he s teer ing
wheel h ub. Holding the stee ring w heel the
wrong way can cause serious inj uries to the
hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag
deploys .

"' It is possible that there will be a slight de lay
when starting the engine for diesel vehicles* in
colder temperatures. Therefore, you must hold
the brake pedal down until the eng ine starts.

Switching the ignit ion on /off
If you would like to switch the ign ition on with
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
"' Inse rt the key into the igni tion lock .
"' Press the key briefly
without press the brake
pedal.
"' To switch the ignition off, press the key aga in.

is switched on.
W hen start ing the e ngine, major elec trical loads
are swi tched off temporarily.
You can only remove the key with the ignition
sw itched off. To do this, yo u have to press on the
key again.
I f the engine sho uld not start immed iately, the
s tarting p rocess is a utomat ica lly stopped after a
short t ime. Repeat sta rt ing procedu re .

A WARNING
- Never allow t he engine to ru n in confined
spaces - dange r of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ig nit ion key from the ign i
t ion loc k w hile the veh icle is moving . Other
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudde nly en
g age and you would not be able to stee r the
vehicle.
- Always ta ke the key with you w henever you
leave yo ur vehicle. Othe rw ise, the engi ne
c ould be s tar ted or ele ctrica l e qui pme nt
s u ch as the power windows cou ld be operat
ed. This can lead to se rious i njury.
- Never leave childre n or pe rsons requiring as
sistance unattended i n the vehicle. The
doors can be locked usi ng the remote trans-

m itter, p reventing peop le from escaping
from the vehicle on their own in the event of
an emergency. Depending on the time of
yea r, people ins ide the veh icle can be ex
posed to very high or very low tempera
t ures .

Avoid h igh engine rpm, full throttle and heavy
engine loads unti l the engine has reached op
e rating temperature - otherwise you risk en
gine damage.
