gy management system for distributing electrici­
ty. This s ignif icantly improves the starting abi lity
and increases the vehicle battery life.
The energy management system Is made up of
batt ery diagno sis , idling current management ,
and dynam ic energ y man agement.
Battery diagnosis
The batte ry diagnosis de termines the vehicle bat ­
tery charge level. The sensors determ ine the bat ­
tery voltage, the battery current, and the battery
temperature. The current charge level and the performance of the vehicle battery are deter­
mined based on th is.
Idling curr ent manag ement
The idling current management decreases the
energy used whi le parked . With the engine
switched off, it manages the energy distribution
to the different electrical components. Data from
the battery diagnosis is taken into account for
this .
Depending on the vehicle battery charge level,
e lectrical equipment is sw itched off one item af ­
ter the other to prevent the vehicle battery from
draining and to maintain the starting ability .
Dynamic en erg y manag ement
While driving, dynamic energy management dis­
tr ibutes the appropriate amount of energy to the
e lectrical equipment. It controls the battery
charge level so that the amount of energy is not
greater than the amount being generated in or­
der to ma inta in an optimal veh icle battery charge
l evel.

- Energy management cannot overcome the
laws of physics . Note that the charge level
and length of the vehicle battery life a re
limited .

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority .
A lot of stress is placed on the veh icle battery
when driving short distances, during city driving, and at cold times of the year . A lot of energy is
used but little is generated. It is also critical
whe n the eng ine is not r unni ng but elect rical
equipmen t is switched on . In this case, energy is
u sed but none is generated.
In situat ions like th is, energy management w ill
active ly regulate the distrib ution of energy.
Long period s without use
If you do not drive your vehicle for severa l days or
weeks, electrical equ ipment is gradually scaled
back or sw itched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the vehicle will be ab le to start after long
per iods of time. Some conven ience f unctions,
s u ch as interio r lig hting or power seat adjust­
ment, may no t be av ailable under certain circum­
stances . These conven ience f unctions wi ll be
available again once you sw itch the ignition on
and start the engine.
With the engine switched off
T he veh icle ba tte ry w ill dr ain if you use Info tain­
ment functions such as listening to the radio
whi le the engine is switched off.
If the sta rting abili ty is impaired by the energy
u se, the following message will appear in the In ­
fotainment system display:
Please start the engine , otherwi se the system
will turn off shortl y.
This message indicates that the system will
switch off automatically after 3 m inutes . If you
would like to continue us ing the funct ions, you
must start the engine.
With the engine running
Although e lectr ica l energy is generated while
driv ing, the ve hicle battery can drai n. This can
happen if litt le energy is generated b ut much is
used , and the charge level of the vehicle battery
is not optimal. .,.

Traffic safety information
Audi recommends performing certain Infotain­
ment system functions, such as entering a desti­ nation, only when the vehicle is stationary . Al ­
ways be prepared to stop operat ing the Infotain­
ment system in the interest of your safety and
the safety of other road users.
_& WARNING
Only use the Infotainment system when traf­
fic cond itions permit and always in a way that
allows you to maintain complete control over
your vehicle.
Introduction
The Multi Media Interface, or MMI for short ,
combines various systems for communication ,
navigation and entertainment in your Audi. You
can operate the MMI using the MMI control pan­
el, the multifunction steering wheel or the voice
recognition system*.

Switching the MMI on
and off
The MMI switches on and off automatically with
the ignition. It can also be switched on or off
manually .
-Switching on manually : press the On/Off knob

When the system is switched on, the last menu
that was selected is displayed and the last audio
source that was selected begins play ing .

MMI switches off. If the MMI has been switch­
ed off manually, it does
not switch on again au­
tomatically the next time the ignition is switch­
ed on .
The MMI can still be operated for approximately
ten minutes after switching the ignition off. If
you do not press any buttons or the control knob
on the MMI control panel with in this t ime, the
MMI switches off automatically.
(D Tips
-The MMI switches off automatically if the
engine is not running and the vehicle bat­
tery is low.
- There may be delays when extending or re­
tracting the display.
Adjusting the volume
The volume of an audio source or a system mes­
sage (for example, from the voice recognition
system) can be adjusted directly while the sound
is ploying using the On/Off knob.
- Increasing or decreasing the volume: turn the

For the system to underst and you:
Speak clearly and distinct ly at a normal volume.
Speak louder when driving faster.
Emphasize the words in the commands even ly
and do not leave long pauses .
D o not speak a command when the voice recogni­
tion system is mak ing an anno uncement.
C lose the doors, the windows a nd the sunroof* to
reduce background noise . Make su re that passen­
gers are not speaking when you are giving a voice
command.
Voice recognition system
Do not d irect the air vents toward the hands free
microphone, which is on the roof headliner near
the front inte rior lights .
Only use the system from the dr iver's seat be­
ca use the hands free microphone is directed to ­
ward that seat .
Additional settings
Additional settings, such as individual speech
training
based on yo ur voice, the Command dis­
play
or the prompt volume , can be adjusted in
the main men u using the
Setup MMI control but ­
ton

A WARNING
--Direct your full attention to dr iv ing. As the
driver, you have complete responsibility for
safety in traff ic. Only use the functions in
such a way that you a lways maintain com­
plete control over your vehicle in all traffic
situa tions.
- Do not use the voice recognition system in
emergencies beca use your voice may change
in stressfu l situations. It may ta ke longe r to
dia l the numbe r or the sys tem may not be
a ble to dia l it at all. Dia l the emergency
number manually.

- The d ialog pauses w hen the re is a n incom­
ing phone call and will con tinue if yo u ig­
nore the cal l. T he d ia log ends if you answer

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with telephone
To make phone calls in your vehicle using the
f\1/11[, connect your cell phone to the /11/11[ via
8/uetooth.
Hand sfree
With this connection, you use the handsfree sys­
tem and operate telephone functions through
the MMI. Phone calls are transmitted through
the antenna on your cell phone.
A WARNING
- Medical experts warn that cell phones can
interfere with the function of pacemakers .
Always mainta in a m inimum d istance of 20
cent imeters between the cell phone anten­
na and the pacemaker.
- Do not carry the cell phone in a pocket di­
rectly over the pacemaker when the phone
is switched on.
- Sw itch the cell phone off immediately if
you suspect it may be interfering w ith the
pacemaker.
- Do not use the voice recognition system
c:> page 141 in emergencies because your
vo ice may change in stressful situations. It
may take longer to dial the number or the
system may not be able to dial it at al l. Dial
the emergency numbe r manually.
- Switch your cell phone
off in areas where
there is a risk of an exp losion . These loca­
tions are not always clea rly mar ked. This
may include gas stations, fuel and chemical
storage fa cilit ies or transpo rt ve hicl es, or lo­
cations where fue l vapors (such as propane
or gaso line vapor in vehicles or bui ldings),
chemicals or large quantities of dust parti­
cles (such as flour, sawd ust o r metal) may
be present in the air. This also applies to a ll
other locations where you would normally
turn yo ur vehicle engine
off .
-The demands of traffic requ ire your full at­
tent ion. Read and follow the guidelines pro­

- Always ma ke sure the forward -facing seat
has been designed and certified by its man­
ufact urer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side a irbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint
up against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
-Always move the front passenger seat to
the highest position in the up and down ad­
justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjus tment range, as fa r away from the air­
bag as possib le, before insta lling the for­
wa rd-facing child restra int.
- Always make sure tha t the safety belt upper
anchorage is beh ind the child restrain t and
not next to or in front of the chi ld res train t
so that the safety belt will be properly pos i­
tioned.
- Make sure tha t the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on .

To reduce the risk of serious injury, make sure
that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will
be d isplayed whenever a child restraint is in­
stalled on the front passenger seat and the
i gnition is switched on .
-If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not stay on , perform t he checks described
~ page 236, Monitoring the Advanced Air­
bag System.
- Take the child restra int off t he front passen­
ge r seat an d install it prope rly at one of the

- Imp roper installation of child restraints can
reduce their effectiveness or even prevent
them f rom providing any protect ion.
- An improperly installed child restra int can
interfere with the airbag as it deploys and
serious ly injure or even kill the chi ld -even
with an Advanced A irbag System.
- Always care fully follow the manufacturer 's
instr uctions provided with the child seat or
car rier.
- Never p lace add itiona l items on the seat
that can increase the total weight registered by the weight -sensing mat and can cause in ­
jury in a crash.

unit monitors the Advanced Airbag System and
turns the airbag indicator light on when a ma l­
function in the system components is detected. The funct ion of the a irbag indicator light is de­
scr ibed in greater deta il below . Because the front
passenger seat contains important parts of the
Advanced Airbag System, you must take care to p revent it from being damaged. Damage to the
seat may preven t the Advanced A irbag for the
fron t passenger seat from doing its job in a
crash .
The front Advanced Airbag System consists
of the follo wing :
-Crash sensors in the front of the vehicle that
measure vehicle acceleration/deceleration to
provide information to the Advanced Airbag
System a bout the severity of the crash.
- An e lectronic control unit, with integrated
crash sensors for front and side impacts. The
control unit "decides" whether to fire the front
airbags based on the information received from
the crash sensors. The control unit also "de­
c ides" whether the safety belt pretens ioners
should be activated .
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and
control valve for the driver ins ide the steer ing
wheel hub .
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and control valve inside the instrument pa nel for
the front passenger.
- A weig ht-sensing mat under the upholstery
padd ing of the front passenger seat cushion
that meas ures the total weight on the seat. The
i nformation registered is sent continuously to
the e lectron ic cont rol unit to reg ulate dep loy­
ment of the front Adv a need Airbag on the pas­
senger side .
- An airbag monitoring system and indicator
light in the instrument cluster

-A sensor in eac h front seat registers the dis­
tance between the respective seat and the steering wheel or instrument pane l. The infor­
mation registered is sent contin uously to the

restraints on the front seat -some important
things to know.
- A sensor in the safety belt latch for the driver
and for the front seat passenger that senses
whether that safety be lt is latched o r not and
transmits this information to the electronic control unit.
A WARNING ,-
Damage to the front passenger seat can pre-
vent the front airbag from working properly.
- Improper repair or disassembly of the front passenger and driver seat will prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from funct ion ing
properly .
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must be
performed by qualified and properly trained
workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or driver
seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the front
passenger seat.
- Never d isassemble or remove parts from the
seat or disconnect w ires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets or
p lace them on the seat. If the weight-sens­
ing mat in the passenger seat is punctured
it cannot work properly .
- Never carry things on your lap or carry ob­
jects on the passenger seat . Such items can
increase the weight reg istered by the
weight-sensing mat and send the wrong in­
formation to the a irbag con trol u nit.
- Never store items under the front passenger
seat. Parts of the Advanced Airbag System
under the passenger seat cou ld be
