The instrument illumination for the needles
and d ia ls t urns on when the ignition is turned
on and the lights are turned off. The ill umina ­
t ion fo r the g auges reduces aut omat ically and
eve ntu ally t urns off as brigh tness outside in­
creases . This f unction reminds the drive r to
tur n the low beams on at the approp riate
time.
Coolant temperature indicator

ed o n. To prevent engine damage, please observe
the following notes about the temperature rang­
es.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge t urn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­
perature yet. Avoid high eng ine speeds, full ac­
ce le rating and heavy e ngine loads.
Normal range
T he eng ine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the L EDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on.
If the. indicator light in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too high¢

-Aux iliary headlig hts and ot her accessories in
front of the coo ling-air intake impa ir th e
cooling effect o f th e coolant . This increases
t he risk of th e engi ne overheating dur ing
hig h ou tsid e tempera tures and heavy en­
gine load.

-The front spoiler also he lps to distr ib ute
cooling air while driving . If the spoiler is
damaged, the cooling effect w ill be im­
paired and the risk of the engine overheat­

Due to the high eff ic iency of these engines,
the engine may not always reac h opera ting
t em perature i n cold outside tempe ra tur es.
This is normal and not a cause for con cern .
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev ­
olutions per minute (RPM).
You shou ld shift to the next lowest gea r whe n
the speed is below 1,S00 R PM. T he begin ning of
the re d zone in the tachome ter ind icates the
maximum permissible engine speed fo r all gea rs
once the engine has been bro ken in and when it is
warmed up to operating temperature . Before
reaching the red zone, you should shift into the
next h igher gea r, c hoose the Dor S selecto r lever
position, or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

The engine speed is limi ted when the eng ine
is cold -the full e ngine o utp ut is not availa­
ble. When the engi ne is at ope rating temper­
at ure, the re d a rea i n the ta chome ter move s
t o a higher RPM range.

Indicator Lights
· Description
The ind icator lights in the instrument cluster
bl ink or tur n on. They ind icate fu nctions or mal­
funct io ns.
Messages may appear w ith some indicator lights.
A war ning s ignal will sound at the same time.
The ind icator lights and messages i n the instru­
ment clus ter d isp lay can be cove red by ot he r dis ­
plays. To show them ag ai n, se lec t t he tab for in ­
dicator lights and messages using the mu ltifu nc­
tion steering whee l
c> page 21. If there are sev­
eral ma lfunctions, you can display them one at a
time us ing the thumbwheel.
Some indicator lights in the d isplay can disp lay in

Central indicator light

If a message appears together with a central in­

- If the indicator light and the message appear
when the vehicle is stationary or after switch­
ing the ignition on, check if you can release the
parking brake. If you cannot release the park­
ing brake, see your authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service Facility . If you can re­
lease the parking brake and the message still
appears, see an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility immediately to
have the malfunction corrected.
- If the indicator light and message appear while
driving, the hill start assist or emergency brak­
ing function may be malfunctioning.
It may not
be possible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set. Do not park your vehicle
on hills. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.

If the 1111 and l'IJ turn on at the same time, the
brake pads are worn out

partment before opening the hood and
checking the brake fluid level.
- If the brake system indicator light does not
turn off or it turns on while driving, the brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an accident.
Stop the vehicle and do not continue driv­
ing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
- If the brake system indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
be malfunctioning. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer available. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve, which in­
creases the risk that the vehicle will slide.
Do not continue driving. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili­
ty for assistance.

- The engine compartment in any vehicle can

D Alternator/vehicle battery
• Electrical system: m alfunction! Battery is
not being charged
There is a ma lfunction in the a lternato r or the ve ­
hicle electrical system.
D rive to an authorized A udi dealer or authorized
Audi Se rvice Facility immediate ly. Beca use the ve­
hicle battery is discharging, turn off a ll unneces ­
sa ry electrical equ ipment such as the rad io. See
your authorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi
Service Facility if the batte ry charge level is too
l ow .

while driving

~ Engine stop while driving
• Engine stopped: No power steering and
brake support.
There is a malfunction in the engine or in the fuel
supply system.
More force is needed to steer and brake the mov­
ing vehicle when the engine is stopped. If the ve­
hicle is rolling , try to bring it to a stop off to the
side from moving traffic. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
sistance .
A WARNING
If the engine stops while driving, you will
need to use more force to brake the vehicle.
This increases the risk of an accident . There
will still be power steering if the ignition is
switched on while the vehicle is rolling and
there is sufficient battery charge. Otherwise,
you must use greater force when steering .
~ Engine oil pressure
• Turn off engine and check oil level
Stop the engine and do not continue driving .
Check the engine oil level

-If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢page 203 . Only continue driving once the in­
dicator light turns off.
- If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
sistance.
@ Tips
The oil pressure warning is not an oil level in­
dicator. Always check the oil level regularly .

malfunct ion corrected.
II Air sus pension : Vehicle is too low . Ground
clearance limited
The ground clearance is very low due to a system malfunctio n. Wait until the air suspension sys­
tem has restored norma l ground clearance. Oth­
erwise, conditions such as an uneven road surface
can lead to vehicle damage.
0 Clutch

The engine torq ue that can be transfer red is re ­
duced. You may continue driv ing. Avo id using the
clutch in any way that w ill place a heavy load on
i t. For example, do not let the clutch rub when
start ing o n hills, whe n towing a trai ler or when
maneuveri ng the vehicle . Drive to an author ized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac ility im­
med iate ly to have the malfu nction corrected.
fiB Clut ch malfunction! You may continue driv­
ing
There is a ma lfunction in the clutch. The engine
torque that can be transferred is reduced. You
may contin ue driving . Avoid using the clutch in
t h e future in any way that w ill place a heavy load
o n it. Fo r example , do no t let the clutc h ru b when
starting o n hill s, when towing a trailer or when
mane uve rin g the vehicle . The ind ic a tor light
turns off once the clutch is fully operab le ag ain.
Lt Brake booster
D Brake servo : limited functionality. You can
conti nue d riving. Conta ct w ork shop
There is a m alfu nction in the brake booster. The
bra ke booste r is ava ilable, but its effectiveness is
reduced . Braking behavior may be different from
how it normally f unctions and the bra ke pedal
may vibrate.
Drive to an au thorized A udi dealer or au thorized
Audi Se rvice Facility immediate ly to have the
malfunction corrected.
n/ u Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the G1 ind icator light blinks while driving, the
ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is act ively regu­
lating .
If the
GJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, yo u can switch
the ignit io n off and then on to switch the ESC on
again . T he i ndicator light t urns off when the sys ­
tem is functioning fully .
