of the seat can also be used to adjust the po­
sition of the safety belts.
Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly pos itioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effect ive­
n ess of safety be lts and will
even i ncrease the
ris k of injury and death by mov ing the safety belt
to cr it ica l areas of the body. Imp roper seating
positions also increase the risk of serious inj ury
and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an
occ upant who is not in the correct seat ing posi­
tion. A driver is respons ible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and espec ia lly for children.

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a
particular severity and in a rollover, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
Rever sible safety belt tensioner s
The safety belts on the front seats are equipped
with power reversible tensioners. The following
funct ions are available when the dr iver's/front
passenger's safety belts are fastened:
- Automatic tens ioners: at the start of a drive,
the safety belts automatically adjust to the passenger after a certain time period or vehicle
speed. To switch the automatic tensioners off,
select the following in the MMI :

Pyrotechnic safety belt pretens ioners
The safety belts are equipped w it h safety belt
prete nsioners. The system is activated by sensors
in front, side and rear -end collisions of great se­
verity and in a ro llover. This tightens the belt and
takes up belt slack

movement during a collision.
A WARNING

- It is poss ible for the pretensioners to dep loy
incorrectly.
- The pyrotechnic system can only provide
protection for one collision. If the pyrotech­
n ic pretens ioners deploy, the pretensioning
system must be replaced.

Booster seats and safety belts
Properly used booster seats can help protect
children weighing between about 40 lbs. and 80
lbs. (18 kg and 36 kg) who are less than 4
ft. 9
in. (57 inches/1.45 meters) tall.

The vehicle's safety belts alone will not fit most
children until they are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 in­
ches/1.45 meters) tall and weigh about 80 lbs.
(36 kg). Booster seats raise these ch ildren up so
that the safety belt will pass properly over the
stronger parts of their bodies and the safety belt
can help protect them in a crash.
.,. Do not use the convertible locking retractor
when using the vehicle's safety belt to restrain
a chi ld on a booster seat .
.. The shoulder belt must lie as close to the cen­
ter of the child's collar bone as possible and must lie flat and snug on the upper body. It
must never lie across the throat or neck. The
lap belt must lie across the pelvis and never
across the stomach or abdomen. Make sure the
belt lies flat and snug. Pull on the belt to tight­
en if necessary .
.,. If you must transport an older chi ld in a boos­
ter seat on the front passenger seat, you can
use the safety belt height adjustment to help
adjust the shoulder portion properly .

Children up to at least 8 years old (over 40 lbs or
18 kg) are best protected in chi ld safety seats de-
~ signed for their age and we ight. Experts say that ....

Child safety
must not use the vehicle safety belts without a
suitable child restraint.
It is usually best to put these children in appro­
priate booster seats. Be sure the booster seat
meets all applicab le safety standards .
Booster seats raise the seating position of the
child and reposition both the lap and shoulder
parts of the safety belt so that they pass across
the child's body in the right places. The routing of
the be lt over the chi ld's body is very important
for the ch ild's protection, whether or not a boos­
ter seat is used. Children age 12 and under must
always ride in the rear seat.
Children who are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 inches/
1.45 meters) tall can generally use the vehicle's
three point lap and shoulder belts . Never use the
lap belt portion of the vehicle's safety belt a lone
to restrain any ch ild, regard less of how big the
ch ild is. Always remember that child ren do not
have the pronounced pelvic structure required for
the proper function of lap be lt portion of the ve­
hicle's three point lap and shoulder belts. The
child's safety absolutely requires that a lap belt
portion of the safety belt be fastened snug ly and
as low as possible around the pe lvis. Never let
the lap belt portion of the safety belt pass over
the child's stomach or abdomen .
In a crash, airbags must inflate within a blink of
an eye and with considerab le force. In order to do
its job, the airbag needs room to inflate so that it
will be there to protect the occupant as the occu­
pant moves forward into the airbag .
A vehicle occ upant who is out of position and too
close to the a irbag gets in the way of an inflating
airbag. When an occupant is too close , he or she
will be struck violently and w ill receive serious or
possibly even fata l injury .
In order for the airbag to offer protect ion, it is
important that all vehicle occupants, especially
any children , who must be in the front seat be­
cause of exceptiona l circumstances, be properly
restrained and as far away from t he airbag as

Snow chains

out snow. Otherw ise, you could impa ir dr iv ing
ab ility and damage the tires.

Us ing incorrect snow chains or insta lling snow
chains incorrectly can result in loss of vehicle
cont rol, which inc reases the risk of an acc i­
dent .

inch (10.S mm) of height can severely dam­
age the whee l housings and other vehicle
components .
- Do not insta ll and use snow chains if there is
a malfunction in the adapt ive a ir suspen­
sion*, because the vehicle he ight will be
very low. If you drive wit h snow chains any­
way, the whee l housings and other vehicle
components can be seve rely damaged .

Low aspect ratio tires
You r A udi is factory-equ ipped with low aspect ra­
tio t ires . T hese tires have bee n thoroug hly tested
a n d been sele cted specifi ca lly for your mode l for
thei r sup erb pe rformance, road fee l and han dling
u nder a var iety of driving conditions. Ask your au ­
thori zed Audi dea ler for more detai ls .
The low as pec t rat io o f these tires is indica ted by
a n umera l of
55 or le ss in t he t ire's si ze designa ­
tion . The numeral represents the ratio of the
tire's si dewa ll height in relation to its trea d width
expressed in percentage. Conventiona l tires have
a height/width ratio of 60 or more.
The performance of low-aspect-ratio tire s is par­
ticularly sensitive to improper inflation pres­
sure. It is the refore important that low aspect
rat io tires are inflated to the specified pressure
and that the inflation pressure is regularly
checked and maintained. Tir e pressur es should
be checked at lea st once a month and always
before a long trip

What you can do to avoid tire and rim
damage
Low aspect ratio tires can be damaged more eas i­
l y by impact with potholes, curbs, gullies or
r idges on the road , particula rly if the tire is un -

- You or your passengers could be injured
wh ile chang ing a wheel if you do not follow
these safety precautions:
- Position the vehicle jack on ly at the desig­
nated lifting points and align the jack.
Otherwise, the vehicle jack could slip and
cause an injury if it does not have suffi­
cient hold on the vehicle.
- A soft or unstable surface under the jack
may cause the vehicle to slip off the jack.
Always provide a firm base for the jack on
the ground. If necessary, use a sturdy
board under the jack.
- On hard, sl ippery surface (such as tiles)
use a rubber mat or similar to prevent the
jack from slipping.
- To help prevent injury to yourself and yo ur
passengers:
- Do not raise the vehicle until you are sure
the jack is securely engaged.
- Passengers must not remain in the vehicle
when it is jacked up.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traff ic.
- Make sure jack position is correct, adjust
as necessary and then continue to raise
the jack.
- Changes in temperature or load can affect
the height of the vehicle.
