Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To prov ide a simpler and more practicable way to
attach the child restra int on the vehi cle seat,
F eder al reg ulat ions req uire speci al lower ancho­
rages in vehicles and dev ices on new child re­
straints to at tach to the vehicle anchorages .
The combination of the tether a nchorages and
the lower a nchorages is now genera lly called the
LATCH system for " Lower Anchorages an d
T ethers fo r Ch ildren."
F orwa rd-facing child res tra ints man ufactu red af­
ter September 1, 1999, are required by U .S. fed­
e ral regulations to comply with new child head
movement performance requirements. These
new performance requirements make a tethe r
necessary on most new child seats.
I nstall ing a child restraint that requ ires a top
tether witho ut one can serio usly impair the per ­
formance of the chi ld restraint and its ability to
protect the chi ld in a collision. Installing a chi ld
restraint t hat requires a top tether w ithout the
top tether may be a v iolation of state law.
C hild rest raint manufacturers offer LATCH lower
anchorages on the ir ch ild seats with hook -on or
push-on connectors attached to adjustable
straps.
In addition to the LATCH lower anchorages, these
child restraint systems usually require the use of
tether straps to he lp keep the child restraint
f irm ly in place.
Tether anchorag es
Your Audi Cabriolet is not equ ipped with a LATCH
system . It is not equipped with top tether ancho­
rages . It is equ ipped with lower anchorages o nly.
Your Cab riole t is equipped wi th t he Active Ro ll­
over Protection System, which is integrated into
the backrest of the rear seat . The Active Rollove r
Protection System dep loys upwards to help pro­
vide addit ional protection in certain collisions

and crash situations. For this reason, your vehicle
is
not equipped wit h top tether anchorages for
u se with fo rwa rd -facing child restra ints .
In Canada , provincial law requ ires th at forward­
f acing child res traints use both top tether ancho ­
rages and lower anchorages; therefo re, it is
not
possible to install a fo rwa rd -f acing child re ­
straint in this vehicle.
In the United States , ch ild restraint installation
must conform with the chi ld restraint manufac ­
tu rer's instruct ions . Check the instr uctions that
come with the child restraint or contact the man­
ufacturer to determ ine if the child restra int may
be insta lled facing forward without securing the
top tether s trap.

Lower anchorages
The lower anchorage attachment points are lo­
cated between the rear seatback and rear seat
cushion Qfig. 161 .
Lower anchorages secure the child restraint in
the seat without using the vehicle's safety belts.
Anchorages provide a secure and easy-to-use at­
tachment and minimize the possibility of improp­
er child restraint installation.
All child restraints manufactured after Septem­ ber 1, 2002, must have lower anchorage attach­
ments for the LATCH system.
Remember that the lower anchorage points are
only intended for installation and attachment of
child restraints specifically certified for use with
LATCH lower anchorages. Child restraints that
are not equipped with the lower anchorage at­
tachments can still be installed in compliance
with the child restraint manufacturer's instruc­
tions on using vehicle safety belts .

Improper use of LATCH lower anchorages can
cause serious personal injury in an accident.
-Alway s carefully follow the child restraints
manufacturer's instructions for proper in­
stallation of the child restraint and proper
use of the lower anchorages or safety belts
in your vehicle.

items to the LATCH lower anchorages.

Installing a child restraint with LATCH
lower anchorages
Whenever you install a child restraint always fol­
low the child restraint manufacturer's instruc­ tions.

~ Make sure the seatback of the rear seat bench
is in the upright position and securely latched
in place.
~ Attach both hook-on connectors with the spring
catch release on the ch ild safety seat onto the
LATCH lower anchorage so that the connectors
lock into place

~ Pullon the connector attachments to make
sure they are properly attached to the LA TCH
l ower anchorage.
~ Pull straps tight following the child restraint
manufacturer's instructions.
R el ea sing
~ Loosen the tension on the straps following the
child restraint manufactu rer's instruct ions.
~ Depress the spring catches to release the an­
chorage hooks from the lower anchorages .
Remember: Use tether straps to he lp keep the
chi ld restraint firm ly in place.

Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Currently, few rearward-facing child restraint
systems come w ith a tether . Please read and
heed the ch ild restraint system manufacturer's
instruct ions carefully to determ ine how to prop­
erly install the tethe r.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously injured and can be ki lled if the front
airbag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center armrest, or
door .
- A tight tether or other strap on a rearward­
facing ch ild restraint attached to the front
passenger seat can put too much pressure
on the weight-mat in the seat and register a
heavier we ight in the Advanced Ai rbag Sys­
tem. The heavier weight registered can
make the system wor k as thoug h an ad ul t

It is in precisely these situations that yo u will no ­
tice energy management active ly regulating the
d istr ibut ion of energy.
Vehicle stands for an e xtended period
If you do not drive you r ve hicle over a period of
seve ral days or weeks, elec trical components are
g radually cut back or switched off . This reduces
energy cons umption and ma intains starting ca­
pability over a longer period. Some of the con­
ven ience funct ions may not operate, such as the
interior lights or the power seat adjustment. T he
conven ience functions will be available again
when yo u switch on t he ign it io n and start the en­
g ine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the
engine turned off o r use other MMI fu nctions,
the battery is being discharged .
If start ing capability is jeopardized due to energy
consumption, a message appears in the M MI dis­
p lay. The message indicates that the system will
be sw itched off automatically in a moment. If
you wish to cont inue using t he functions, you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the
veh icle is being driven, t he battery can become
d ischa rged. This happens most ly when l ittle en ­
ergy is be ing generated and a g reat deal con­
sumed and t he battery's state of cha rge is not
opti mal.
To br ing the energy ba lance back into equ ilibri­
um, consume rs which req uire especially la rge
amo unts of energy a re tempora rily cut bac k or
sw itche d off. Hea ting systems i n par tic ul ar r e­
qu ire a gre at deal of energy. If you not ice, for ex ­
ample , that the heated seats* or the heated rear
window are not heating, they have been tempo ­
rari ly cu t back or switched off . These systems will
be ava ilab le aga in as soon as the energy balance
has been restored .
You will a lso notice that engine idle speed has
been inc reased slightly. This is normal and not a
cause for conce rn. By increasing eng ine idle

speed the a ddi tional energy required is genera t­
ed and the battery is charged.

s t alled or not).
Aspect ratio
means the ratio of the height to
the w idth of the tire in percent.
Numbers of 55 or lower indicate a
low sidewall for improved steer­
ing response and better overall
handling on dry pavement .
